Ariel where bought out by BSA as early as 1951, as a going concern.  Ariels were pretty distinctive right to the end - the 2 stroke Arrow and Leader had no BSA equivalent for example, but the 4 strokes in the '50's were closely related to BSA designs. The Ariel factory was closed in the early '60's and production moved to BSA but they continued with the Leader and Arrow and introduced the Pixie, a banana shaped moped.

Ariel was resurrected in the late '90's and now makes the 4 wheeled Atom and Nomad and the 2 wheeled Ace. All three vehicles are totally bonkers.

Yes. Three notorious criminals attempted to rob a bank, stole a Fiat Uno, and caused a long chase during which one policeman was fatally shot. Eventually one of the robbers surrendered, but the other two fled into a hotel and took the guests there as hostages. This picture was taken during that hostage situation, I believe.
