I wonder if he survived ? I was there about 25 years after the eruption , there were burnt tree stumps about 10 miles out.

Presumably whoever took the photo survived to get it developed and published. I'm guessing that this person was probably the driver of the car

The Sparkford Inn still looks much the same today and is near to Haynes Motor Museum, so probably a better than average chance of there still being something interesting in the car park.
