How long should....

Recommended Posts

.... a good quality (Continental) 205/55/16 tyre last when fitted on the rear axle of a FWD 100BHP hatchback?

Bear in mind that two trans-europe trips aside, the car has mostly been used for general commuting and the odd motorway journey, never been overloaded or abused.

I guess we are talking about your megane here, I don't think modern tires last very long anymore as they are made of soft rubber, i guess 15-20000 miles should be the norm though.

That is correct.

Any more suggestions?

They should last until the front tyres need replacing, then they should go on the front.

I'd just leave them on the back, for roughly 3 sets of fronts.

Approximately one thousand years.

I used to get 40k out of michelins on the front of the BXs and 80,000 on the backs! So, I'll say 50,000 miles

Rears last pretty much indefinitely don't they? They often need replacing because of cracked sidewalls!

Anywhere between 50-80,000 miles on the rear for an average FWD motor. Eg Focus, Astra.

Fronts I reckon 22-35,000 miles. All dependent on the driving style, maintenance levels, and load characteristics.

26,000 miles.

Continental? if they are sportcontacts, I'm going to guess about 15k or something equally pitiful. They are brilliant tyres in every respect other than wear. oh and price. and snow.

Shit... I've just had Contis on the front of the Blingo.

I put the new boots on the front, then move them to the rear when the ones that just keep the back end from making sparks finally get to 2mm. Usually get about 40-45000 miles from a pair of tyres.

I killed a brand new pair of front sportcontacts in about 9k on my old Saxo, and the rears were well over half gone in that time. This was 90% just driving to hull and back 3 times a week on the m18/m62/a63, 5% around town driving and 5% driving like a cock with my foot down (but not handbrake turns/wheelspinning or any purposeful tyrekilling)

If they fitted my car and I could afford them again, I'd buy them in a blink, they are awesome even in the wet. I usually go for "branded budgets" like Falken and Nankang, but Conti were the only tyre available in 195/40/16 under £100 a corner.

I'm sure the ecocontacts or premiumcontacts are a lot more reasonable for wear though

In my last job we'd be changing Contis in as little as 10k miles. These were on things like Focus C-Max, nothing remarkable.

26,000 miles.

Bang on! That is exactly how long they lasted. Pathetic! I expected at least double that!

Rear tyres on a 2CV are good for 80,000 miles, so cracked sidewalls are more of an issue than wear. Apart from Firestone 125s, which wear out in seconds either end.

Dread to think how old the BX's rear tyres are. I have some new ones and after some decidedly twitchy moments yesterday, I think I'll be getting them fitted pretty soon.
