Cyprus shite - May '11 update

Actually yes, I have to echo those remarks. Most of my pics are simple record snaps, some of these on here are bordering on art! A very impressive set.

Thanks fellas. Brace yourselves for some daylight-taken updates coming soon, including the Tagora I promised earlier.

My holiday transport by zenithfivenine, on Flickr

My holiday car was full of religio-tat icons. The Lord didn't help it from nearly disastrously overheating when the bottom radiator hose burst, or from handling like the tyres were on marbles, but like any shiter I can grow to like almost any cars. I've even been looking at Proton Compacts on eBay...

septic land yacht is a Holden Premiere HQ..as usual..great spots mate

I can see I need to get over to Nicosia! I'll soon have the Granada taxed and legal, so there's a nice run-out for it. The mystery land-yacht looks like a South African Chevrolet, but I wouldn't be able to give you a model name, I'm not well up on Afrikaaner cars. The white Wartburg might be exactly that, or might possibly be a Volga? The station wagon certainly is, and the Toyota certainly is a Corolla, an early-70s estate.

Thanks again Mr Hatred, for posting these delights.

Fantastic! Thanks!

Some lovely 131s there.

What is the little red car on the top left here? Sure its not a Trabant...

Pretty sure it's an Autobianchi.

Cheers for the ID on that land yacht Rab, makes sense since it's RHD. Is the estate in the background a Holden too? I should really carry a notepad with me... I half recall it being an AMC.

Posted

I stand corrected on the Holden, no worries mate! :D Been trying to blow up the station wagon to get a better look, it's saying GM to me rather than AMC although both were building RHD at the time (late 60s/early 70s). Trouble is, big cars are worth very little here when they get old, because of the back-tax issue. If a 2.5-litre+ car has been laid up for only a couple of years, the accrued tax soon becomes excessive, then only a mad Brit will buy it, put it back on the road and use it. Like me, for example! :D That does explain why all these lovely old cars are just sitting around mouldering, which they really shouldn't. My eye keeps returning to the brown Cadillac in the background, and the bell in my head keeps tolling "you had one of those and loved it..."

Apologies for reposting, but that top photo is amazing. Is that an early Sambar next to the Luce?

below that, I love the little Kei-van in the middle of the stack, but what is it?

The scrapyard photos are pretty depressing, but really they just look like pics of early '80s British yards (except everything is solid). It's nice that things like that still exist somewhere in the world.

17/10 points for having a 604, Tagora and Ro80 in the same spotted thread

Your photo framing skillz0rz are great. And as for crap car content, I think the only word is spufftastic! I've never wanted to holiday in Cyprus until now! (mainly because I'm odd and don't like hot places).

Now's the time, dollywobbler! Weather is distinctly British at the moment, but it won't last of course. Last winter was a bit earlier coming, but I could still work on a car in January, in a T-shirt. Ok, the sun sets earlier than it does in summer, but you can still get some tat photographed. Just check out my thread on the subject, and you'll see what I mean.

Second picture just as great , Escrot , Imp , HA van and an early Civic , Its like going back in time

These posts should get an autoshite award :D:D

I was thinking the same sort of thing. I can remember when UK scrapyards looked like this, right down to the content. Now the dreaded Elfin Safety has taken all the fun out of it... Not to mention of course, the frequent purging of steel-rich old hulks to make way for plastic-and-electronic modern tat.

I visited because my sister lives there, but it was a lot more appealing than I expected, especially away from the tacky, holiday apartment-crammed tourist areas. It was pretty pleasant in November, about as hot as a good British summer. The humidity is about 50%, so it's quite a 'fresh' heat.

Thanks for the IDs Lukas. I thought the 1000 might have been marketed as a Corolla in the UK.

Excellent work, Mr H. Your Arrow is definitely a Hillman. Being so plain leads me to suspect it could be a Minx, although the door badge has gone. The registration points to late 72 or early 73, not entirely sure they were still offering a Minx by then. Of course it might not have been new when it was registered.

I have some shite to post, but I'll open a new thread rather than dump into yours.

I'd like to see that, I'm sure there's an equal amount of shite down your way.

I'm going to try to 'do' Northern Cyprus next time I'm over, I don't have much to base it on but I bet it's full of automotive horrors. Hopefully some Anadols.

Posted

We were there last summer, I'll stick up some snaps in a few minutes. Sadly no Anadols but lots of recycled Renault 9, 11 and 12s, and Turkey's idea of Fiats...
