New tool for the boys in blue?

One of these. But hopefully you'd be able to spot the rather large trailer...

AA President Edmund King believes that the camera will be welcome on UK roads, as long as it is not used as a "money-making machine".

Well, what are the chances of that? Durrrr...

Despite what the article says, I'm not sure that the cameras actually read the tax disc. When I was in green*, we were shown a (then) fledgling ANPR, which reads the number plate, and cross-references with the DVLNI database.

*police uniforms in NI are green.

as much as i hate speed cameras.what the feck are the police doing with them, surely this should be a local council thing... fed up with plod hounding the motorist just to try and make everyones life a misery instead of a driving pleasure... while burglars muggers rapists and the like walk around inflicting misery on victims of crime as they know the police are too feckin busy trying out new toys to trap motorists

maybe this should be on the grumpy post :)

A camera to detect tailgating?

Does it have sensors to gauge weather conditions? Do they do a friction test on the road surface too? As any decent driver will know, there's no fixed limit on how close you should follow, it depends on a massive range of variables. Do they have a camera to tell if the driver is eyeing up the lass in a short skirt rather than looking at the car in front, as that is as dangerous as tailgating.

How about a camera that detects whether the driver has hayfever and is likely to have sneezing fits? That's dangerous. Or a camera to detect whether the driver has put Lincs FM on the radio, and is thus likely to distract himself by yelling at the twat of a DJ.

I think having machines determine traffic offences is a fantastic idea, we should roll this out to every aspect of life and have it so a computer can decide whether you've done a load of murders, etc.

You are much much closer on that than you think!

Roughly what I was thinking. No computer yet devised can do what the brain does, at the rate it does. I could commit all manner of offences right in front of a regular speed camera, but as long as I wasn't speeding, it wouldn't know otherwise. How's this box of tricks supposed to do it?

Ummm, that's a bit like 'Minority Report'. A bit too much like. Arm the machines with death rays, and we can tack 'Logan's Run' on too  Hang on, I'm over 30...(hides under bed)

You have rumbled the plod, CJ. There's actually nothing inside but a PCSO sitting on a chemical toilet.
