New member and need advice regarding Herald

Hello,

Been lurking for approx two months on your forum, I must admit even though I drive a non shite car (Citroen C4 Grand Picasso)I find myself drawn to this forum, keeping old cars alive and kicking and appreciating a bit of nostalgia. Bloody great.

I still have my Fiat Marea state 2.0, this however may get sold for a Triumph Herald!

Hopefully I will be going to have a look at this tomorrow what should I be looking out for? Apart from the general rust etc.

The last classic I owned was a 1980 MG BGT and I was only 18 and I fancy a bit of a classic again. New cars just don’t have the appeal of shite! :D

Thanks & hello again.

Welcome along!

I think Seth will be your man for Herald advice, he certainly knows his onions.

Wat may want to disagree about C4s not being shite and everyone else may not want to call a Sherpa Sports (MGB) a classic mind :D:D

Okay the 80s MG may not have been a 'classic' it was however very cool to drive when i was 18 :) 1.8, RWD and working overdrive!

Fiat Mareas must be solid gold future shite surely? I'd like to think I'll turn up to a show in ten years and see one.

Certainly better than row upon row of Sherpa coupes all painted the same colour

Oh, and hello and welcome btw!

Herald: Almost everything mechanical is available so don't worry too much about that side of things. Listen out for clicking from the rear drive shafts when slowing down as that may indicate worn UJs which may then result in replacement shafts being necessary. It'd be worth checking the engine number (on the top face of the block above where the fuel pump is fitted) to make sure it is what it is supposed to be. There's a list on the Canley Classics website I think or just try Googling.

Worst bit to repair structurally is the chassis area under the diff so check this well. Chances are it has been repaired here before so check how well its been done. Check all the chassis outriggers, particularly the rear ones (in front of the back wheels) where the radius arm bolts and also the rear "boot riggers" under the boot floor. Proper repair of the boot rear corners where these bolt to the body is also time consuming. Also look at wheel arches, and the "D plates" which are the flat panels under the headlights and plainly visible when the bonnet is up.

Roughly how much should I be looking to pay to have the boot riggers replaced per side?

and thanks for your reply.

In my book, owning a Marea Estate makes you worthy of being a bone-fide shiter! Welcome!

What model Herald are you looking at, Stephend? Here's the list of engine prefixes so you can tell if the engine is the right one for the model. I recommend the Herald messageboard at club.triumph.org.uk for heaps of information. Helped me countless times.

Seth, did you send me that Paypal invoice?

I called the place that had the car for sale only to be told that its no longer for sale as the 'gaffer' wants to take the plate off the car

I have since found another one for sale but its a little further away, approx 80 miles, while i dont mind going this far for it (I'm traveling 260 mile round trip on sunday to pick up a 50/60s cupard i got on ebay) i have no way of getting it back, unless i book it in for an mot

Sounds like the next instalment of the Autoshite epic but pretty stupid car collection stories, right there :D

Panel gaps are hilariously gigantic.[over an inch gap between scuttle and bonnet is not unusual. Doors always seem to stick out at the bottom.] Boots never fit properly

I got a Herald in March and I can vouch that it is more holy than the Pope, I just don't know how bad is bad and wether to just split it for parts, The inside is quite nice, I Have just got a mig welder reduced from £240 to £100 at B&Q as they are having a major end of season sale and getting a new line in. I not allowed to have it yet though as wifey got it for my Christmas prezzy!!

Shame you didn't say last week as one with mot till june just sold near me for £595 ( I paid £500) for my pile of red oxide so I was gutted. Still it will keep me off the booze for a while and away from all the c*ap wifey watches on tv.
