Do I want a CX?

I've always been fascinated by these wierd things since my boss let me loose in his when I was 17.

It was a brand new DTR estate and I've never driven anything like it since.

Here is the dilema. Dollywobbler seems desperate to off load his and I could possibly justify it as a tat hauler if I flog the Transit.

However:

The CX has broken. Again. What a useless heap of shit this car has proved to be!
Cannot really comprehend just how unreliable this car has been
I made the mistake of using the CX today.
the CX is running like shite now
The CX. Made the mistake of tinkering with it. Now it won't run at all.
Beggars belief that a small Citroen can be easy to work on, and a bigger one is an absolute nightmare.
Hate it. Don't want it.
Must remember though that I can't fill the tank or it pisses petrol everywhere.

(Actually my AX did that)

Does anyone else sometimes wish they just owned a 'nice' car? Problem is - I've been trying for years to find one, and wonder if such a machine actually exists.

And....

Its actually quite nice.

What to do? :?:

I would absolutely love a CX. Trouble is, if I was going to have one it'd need to be in first rate condition. If I had a cheap one then I'd probably end up hating it, much as 'wobbler seems to have done.

And I'll probably never afford a really good one :(

But! MY CX just bossed its MOT with nuthing needing at all! (remember it cost me £700 bones 5 years ago)

I can accelerate through street floods with the suspension on top height

Bloody good brakes

Incredible steering (speed-sensitive, self-centering even when stopped)

A car that totally OWNs rough, bumpy 3rd world roads like the ones on the UK

And it looks like a spaceship without the blobby crappy modern car look

CX has really good visibility! near 360Ëš windows. Mind you, it's like driving a green house in summer!

Mega floaty suspension but anti-dive set up so it feels solid when you stop unlike the DS that pitched and floated like a mad thing under braking.

It's not exactly burning rubber quick but it's far from slow!

CXs are just great - everyone should have a long term shot of a CX to 'get it' - it's just a great saloon car that needed a hatchback and the ultimate estate.

Some things I should point out about mine.

It's not been loved. I suspect that's why a few gremlins have plagued it.

The hydraulic system has been SPOT ON. That's the reason people usually run a mile!

It's not rotten. That's the second reason...

If you're handy with a set of spanners and prepared to put the effort in, it is a MASSIVELY rewarding car. Problem is, I've got a fleet of five old cars at the moment, and they all require spanner-work. The CX has unfairly been eating up most of that time and the BX by way of comparison, has proved utterly reliable (though to be fair, I've hurled a fair bit of cash at it over the past year - not a ridiculous amount though).

The cx is without doubt the most wonderful of cars and cool asfuck. You should own one for a while.

I've had 2 and now have a 240.

Why?

Well the cx is brilliant but the 240 is one of the most reliable retro cars available. Is easy to fix and built like a tank. But the cx is still cool as fuck

Do you want a cx?

Yes. No question.

Saves me from being tempted (and I Sooo am, trust me!)

I had a '79 CX 4 or 5 years ago. I only kept it a few months as The Fuhrer demanded a reduction in the fleet numbers. I've been looking on the web this evening for another one. Not particularly easy to own but very rewarding. I will have another. That (irritating) Top Gear mantra that everyone should at some stage have an Alfa could equally be applied to the CX.

I've had love/hate relationships with a chrome-bumper CX20RE, and a plastic-bumper CX25GTi Auto in my time....

....It was mainly love though! :D

If you have the urge, you should do it....What's the worst that could happen?

I've had six CX's. Love 'em. They're so completely different from anything else, yet still brilliantly practical. They make superb tow cars too (although reversing a trailer into a tight space can be a chore with an estate as their turning circle makes a Series III Land Rover look like an FX4). And the GTI Turbos are seriously quick - they're only 165bhp but the torque is immense. As long as there's no hydraulic issues, the rest of the car is no more complicated than anything else (although there are some bloody awkward rust traps). Would disagree with the "poor man's XM" comment though - I've seen several roadworthy XMs on the Bay recently for £300 or less, can't remember the last time I saw a T&T'd CX that cheap.

Fantastic cars. :D

While most people will bang on about the hydraulics, the system's actually pretty reliable and easy enough to fix when it goes wrong. As with any Froggymobile, it's the electrics you have to watch out for.
