Not Still Halfords

  • Alban Retail Park, credited as Hawleys Lane, Warrington - retail park redeveloped into the Junction NINE retail park and lost Halfords around 2016. A Halfords Autocentre now stands on Hawleys Lane itself and has done since about the mid 10s. Bonus points for being mere yards down the road from a former Stobart depot.
  • Abbey Retail Park, Barking - flattened 2015. Now high rise complex
  • Hambledon Road, Waterlooville (listed as Hambleton Road) - closed down in the last couple of years, building still present, not currently occupied.
  • Granville Street, Dover - now a Pure Gym as of 2025.
  • Westwood Industrial Estate, Margate - gone as of 2016, moved down the road to the Westwood Gateway Retail Park
  • Cannon Lane, Tonbridge - looks to have very recently closed.
  • St Mary's Street North, Preston - this is now an events venue, Halfords is on Mariners Way and has been for some time!
  • Merrielands Retail Park, Dagenham - closed between 2022 and 2024. Now a Pure Gym.
  • Streatham Road, Mitcham - closed mid-10s, flattened, now a Lidl
  • Westminster Retail Park, Ellesmere Port - closed between 2022 and 2024, now a Farmfoods - Autocentre on a different site still stands.
  • Portfield Retail Park, Chichester - changed to a Dunelm by 2018. Halfords moved to the nearby Barnfield Retail Park.
  • Downlands Business Park, Upper Brighton Road, Worthing - closed some time in 2022. Autocentre on a different site still stands.
  • Unit 4, Toll Bar Road, Leechmere Industrial Estate, Sunderland - now on Trimdon Street retail park - no luck finding precisely where on there it was though
  • The Maybird Centre, Stratford-upon-Avon - closed late 10s, now a Mountain Warehouse - autocentre still exists elsewhere
  • College Auto Centre, 2-6 Kingstanding Road, Perry Barr - now a furniture shop
  • 1001 Leeds Road, Bradford - now a halal supermarket, moved to Hamm Strasse
  • Clyde Retail Park, Clydebank - now a Salvation Army donation centre
  • Carnegie Drive Retail Park - now a Farmfoods - Halfords now at Halbeath Retail Park
  • 1305 Shettleston Road, Glasgow - flattened, now an Aldi, don't know if directly replaced
  • 1 Manse Road, Motherwell - flattened. Wasn't one for a while though, was another motor factors then a world buffet/electrical shop
  • 214 Penarth Road, Cardiff - pretty recent closure, may be a supermarket now.
  • Parc Troste, Llanelli - it's now moved up the road to Parc Pemberton. I believe it was in Unit 9, which now occupies The Works and until recently, JD.
  • Brown Lennox Retail Park, Pontypridd - looks like it closed around lockdown, now a Pure Gym

Daewoo Motor Shows

Unit 3B, Meteor Centre, Derby - now D&M Furniture

A2, Riverside Retail Park, Northampton - this is taking a bit of guesswork. 1A is the Wickes (formerly Homebase), 2B is Mountain Warehouse (formerly Wilko) - this seems the most likely candidate?

Unit 6, Allison Court, Metro Retail Park (credited as Alison Court, Metro Centre) - next door to Halfords, now a motorbike clothing shop

Unit 14A, Retail World, Parkgate, Rotherham - Became a BHS, now a Primark.

Daewoo Car Centre (a smaller Motor Show, apparently)

Trusham Road, Marsh Barton - So I wasn't expecting anything to look like an actual dealership given Daewoo's intended model. I'm going to assume that this is the former St Davids Saab/Chevrolet site, which is now home to Days Van Hire.

Kingsholm Road, Gloucester - the former Gloucester Hyundai/Saab site, showroom still exists, housing many businesses

Welford Road, Leicester - Confirmed, now the site of Vertu Toyota

Shirley House, Camden Road, Camden - this is a rather large office block that now seems to house the British Transport Police.

Sefton Street, Liverpool - now home to Arnold Clark MG, was Lookers Honda for a bit.

Killinghall Road, Undercliffe, Bradford - this seems to be MB Motor Group now, has briefly had a life as a Mitsubishi franchise too.

I've got as far as Kent, but I have listed all the Car Centres/Motor Shows, it's just Halfords branches left to go.

I bet if you put all theses collected dealer lists together you could track the progress of different sites.

I can think of a few garages locally that changed franchise quite a few times.

Morris, Datsun, Fiat, Peugeot, Vauxhall and now a Co-op.

Another went Austin, Fiat and now a community church.

Another little village garage was more up our Street with Wartburgs, Lada, Yugo and later Peodua.

Also featured in a Hubnut video once!

The Daewoo Motor Show in Norwich, Norfolk was based at Unit 52 White Lodge Trading Estate, Hall Rd, NR4. Accessed via Bessemer Rd. It is now a branch of Euro Car Parts.

I passed my driving test in January 1995 so some time later I went there in my crappy Mini after it opened to ogle the shiny new Nexias and Esperos. Collected a range brochure too. :)

The aylesbury Halfords is still there. I've only ever visited it once with a mate who needed coolant and even then I fucking hated every second of it... Hate that entire shopping nit, never ever go there or if I do I walk from tesco as the car park gridlocks ever so easily

How did it work? Was there just a pop up stand in the store and maybe an car in the car park as the 'demonstrator'?

I suspect what I've got here is an early list, perhaps around the time they launched Daewoo from early 95/maybe even late 94. A lot of the Motor Shows/Car Centres are shown as opening throughout the first half of 95. Hence why ones such as Norwich aren't shown, nor is the site we know existed in Nottingham on Daleside Road where the Toby Carvery is now (and those wonderful bollards!). It would also explain the typos!

On the Nottingham front, by 2002/3 I know they were being sold out of Gordon Lamb on Lortas Road in Basford alongside MG Rover and Daihatsu, because A. Father_Markeh worked there and occasionally brought home a Matiz or Kalos, and B. We bought our Tacuma from there in late 2003 (FP53GNN is still out there and I would love to buy it back!) - that site is now an Aldi.

Was there ever a Daewoo dealer in Hull? I know Welptons at Hessle were a Chevrolet dealer for a bit before they closed

There are certainly some sites you could, from the research I've done a few former BL/ARG dealers went to Ford and I'm told several switched to Citroen as well

Yeah it's a small non franchise place now, I went to that Daewoo dealer when it opened with my Dad, it looked like nothing else, it had a massive white sail like roof, and touch screens where you could configure car colour and specs, nowhere else id ever been as a kid had anything like that, must have been around 1996/7 I was about 8 or 9.

He test drove an Espero 2.0 CDXi iirc, and I think he had his Mondeo, which was a M reg.

I remember him being very disappointed with the Espero, looking back I guess it was a fairly dismal car, but I loved the experience as a kid, free cake and everything 😂
