Lancia Y10

Was just thinking back to when I was a kid at school and my mates Dad had Lancia Y10. At first I took the piss out of the car, but when I actually got to have a ride in it I can remember being quite impressed. I certainly remember it was quite plush for a little car - 'Alcantara' trim on the dash well before its time.

Anyway I have always wondered how much the car shares with the Fiat Cinquecento as they always seem, at least in my eyes, quite similar, despite the fact that the Lancia (Autobianchi) was launched in 1985. Is the platform the same or am I just wildly off track?

Anyway I still think they are an interesting little car. :)

I agree, I would stop and take a look at one if I was ever to see one again.

Just that little bit different to the other little cars of the era.

Floor pan and 'Omega' rear suspension are shared with the MK2 (86>) Panda.

I don't know if the White Hen shares anything with the Cinq though.....

did they all have the backstreet banger spec mismatched black tailgate?

I've had two Y10s - an LX and a Fila. Fila was colour-coded white with a red interior (and a white tailgate IIRC, although this was some time ago so might be mistaken), LX was metallic black with a beige velour and Alcantara interior. LX also had electric windows and central locking - not bad for a D-reg supermini. Both went well for sub-1-litre cars too, and both were 5-speed. Handling was good fun, driving position was crap, and for some reason the turning circle was much smaller to the left than to the right. I'd have another.

I loved the Y10 - didn't speak to my mother for weeks when she chose a Pug 205 over the Y10 LX. I remember sitting in one as a kid at a motorshow years and years ago and being mesmerized by the rear hinge-opening windows that were leccy! I was back there for 10 minutes playing with them. What a ridiculously lazy feature - loved it to bits.

Like the Ypsilon too.

Mate of mine had a Y10 Turbo in a rather nice metallic burgundy type colour. Rapid little bugger, that was.

Think they were Uno-based rather Cinq.

When I first saw one of these (in Belguim) I really did think the tailgate was a replacement part, but then I started seeing more of them with the Black tailgate and always wondered why they were Black.

These are/were popular cars in Belguim. Not seen many (If any come to think of it) in England.

Panda-based, hactually...

The turbos do go well, Y10 bodies don't weigh much. That fact makes this creation an absolute rocket:

Yes, that is an 8V Delta integrale engine (and complete running gear) stuffed in a Y10 shell.

There's one in Leicester, I must get a photo of it.

That Yntegrale creation was a real labour of love. There's a build history diary on the web somewhere (will try and find and post).

That was Martini white until it started raining - oxydization is a fascinating thing. By the end of the afternoon, I expect it was a rolling chassis.

Like these. They stood out from the crowd of hatchbacks I remember when I was younger.

Yeah was there a reason for the black tailgate? Knowing Lancia it they probably forgot to paint them and sold them anyway.

Fiat did a similar thing with some of the run-out Seicentos - orange paintwork but a primer grey tailgate and bumpers - looked wrong.

Some interesting stuff there people! I like the 'Yntegrale' - In red and with better wheels that could look like the production model that never was. 8)

Remember those Filas as well. They were quite smart. (My very own oxblood Fila boots were a sight to behold in the 90s as well I can tell you!).

I have always been amazed because I really believe that Fiat took a step back with the Cinquecento from the Y10 that started life several years earlier - In many ways it was a better car I have always thought. Having said that I have never driven either.
