Merc GLK?

There's a large amount of these out here. Did UK ever get them? Any good? Mrs CT expressing an interest as she's gone off the idea of the Pinin Junior I had tentatively planned for her later this year. She got angry with the prospect of a 1.1 engine.

Do we get those?

I have never seen one.

Plenty of the fulll-size GL's though. which are larger than some small countries.

Get a proper Gelandewagen, it is the shite way.

It's not something I've heard of either. Mind you, when I win the lottery I'll certainly rush out and order a Brabus tuned AMG Unimog.

The official line from MBUK is that there are no plans to market the car in the UK as it cannot be engineered for right hand drive....something to do with propshafts ballsing it up.

Mercedes GL available as:

350cdi £55665

450cdi, £67490

500 petrol. £70160..

A big 7 seat monster intended for US market. Sells in tiny numbers over here.

Merc GLK is a smaller version of it...a kind of BMW X3 thing.

Gotta be honest, i'm struggling to think of a less appealing motor than either of those.

O RLY.

I see loads on my travels.

They are soooo bland I'm not entirely sure I'd see one if it kissed me on the lips

Ah, saw some GLKs on our Euro travels. Thought it deserved a Ssang Yong badge to be honest. 1.2345/10.

Presumably the K stands for kleine (small), they are pretty monstrous so get a proper Gelandewagen!

Blimey - not a great deal of love for these. I guess cars either suit surroundings or don't. The ones I see look quite nice compared to the endless Toyota Amazons and GL500's that litter the roads here. Maybe it is not "nice", just a "pleasant change". Mrs CT likes the idea of a small cutesey 4x4 but won't tolerate the tiny engined ones. As I just said on a different thread, she learned to drive in a 200bhp car and is constantly moaning at the lack of power of most cars we drive / hire. She thinks there is something wrong with the BMW because "it doesn't accelerate properly", and she hated the Freelander we test-drove as it had "no power". She adores the proper G-wagens (there is a black Brabus or AMG G500 down in the car park) but we're not getting one of those for daily driver purposes when the idea is to use sensible amounts of fuel and be relatively hassle free for a few years. And, obviously, I can't afford one! I may have been able to stretch to a second hand GLK had they been available in UK.

Oh well, back to the Sante Fe idea then. She overlooks the lack of power as it "looks like a real car". I'm not even going to try and fathom her logic, just choose what she can accept and I can live with.

I think the Freelander is easily the classiest out of that lot, sounds like you have to factor in 'Womans Logic' though, so better just do as youre told.

Could you get her a chinese Frontera copy? Basically get her to make a first step on the 'Shite Ladder' (this is a ladder that is decended rather than climbed). She'll be scouring the classifieds for one of those chinese Maestro/Legacy things before you know it.

This is for UK - we're looking to quit Asia as soon as this current project finishes. She's really missing UK - sure it may have a lot of problems, but boring village life in Norfolk is much more preferable to anything here.

There is logic in what you say there - I know for a fact that because of the Deer pick-up, she loves the Lancia Beta hatchback, proper old landies and Commer vans. When this project has finished, the houses sold and life begins in Norfolk, I am sure there will be a modern 4x4 for winter, the Jag for me, and something ridiculous for her - my bets are an old land rover or a mini pick-up

Definitely NOT a GLK.

Just bring the Deer over! If nothing else it will give you major street cred (in my eyes).

I've already worked out a route from here to Norfolk and it's over 11,000 miles by road. I've already talked to my NatGeo friend about this - he's all intrepid and stuff. Nice pootle around the Taklamakan desert, over the border through Kazakhstan, bit of Russia, Belarus, Europe, Chunnel, M20, M25, M11, A11, off at the junction after Snetterton, turn left, turn right before the windmill, over two sets of crossroads, hang a left at the Diss crossroads, and left into Chapel street, but after about 30 seconds pondering, he looked up at the car and asked "what, in that fuckin' heap?" The pondering stopped. This, from a man who traversed Mauritania on a mule.

Nice idea though.

It'll be fine, relax! If it isn't fine, don't expect me to do right much.

K in this context would stand for "Kurz" meaning short. In a car based vehicle, it may also mean "Kompressor" meaning Supercharger of course.

That sounds quite tempting as a holiday idea!

Spend much time in Cheshire...?

No, but I do spend a fair bit of time in Kensington & Chelsea plus the 'footballer belt' of the home counties.

My little 'insiders' tell me that 2497 GL Class have been sold in the UK since launched in 2006.

Now, lets assume that each dealer has put one demonstrator a year on in that time

132 dealers X 4 demos = 528. Excluding registrations by head office.

Leaving less than 2000 actually bought by punters first hand.

Not exactly flying off the shelf in my opinion.

Made in Bremen- When I was there a few weeks back there were quite a few sitting in the showroom waiting to be collected-seem to be getting very popular in Germany too. German magazines seem to give them the thumbs up.
