Old Police Cars

Wow, that Toledo is ace! I've seen Dolomites as jam sandwiches but never a Toledo.

I am informed by a mate who works at the Uni that this is the Lancaster University Campus Police car still (seems about right as the sign/light on the roof seems to be a modern item):

Aparently they are real Police. All seems abit strange to me though. I will enquire further I think.

Hmm, I'd imagine that Minor with the YYO reg is an ex Met police car, that's assuming it is a real ex-police car of course.

Many years ago I worked for Lancaster University, I was unaware of there being dedicated campus po-po...

There definitely is a dedicated Police now - started 2009 I think - My mate works next door to 'em - Still need to find out more about car from him though.

Yes the Toledo is mine but It's nothing more than a replica.

The inspiration came from a retired Notts police officer I know. He told me that they used Toledo's from about 1972-74 as rural village Panda cars. The main cars used were Sprints, Triumph 2000 / 2500 as traffic patrol cars around that era.

Apparently there were not too popular with country bobbies as there were on the small size and also difficult to get equipment out of the boot easy... So my ex Notts mate told me. Probably the reason why they only used them for a couple of years? Anyhow, was fun to re create with nothing more than stickes & magnets!

It turns heads even with the POLICE signs removed...

I would be honored to take a good kicking in the back of an Arna police car.

I owned this '70 Ford Torino 500 sedan twice during 1990/91, I bought it fitted with a 302 V8, it was very basic inside with no power options or even power steering  When the master cylinder failed it's replacement turned out to be the same as a 427 Cobra Jet Mustang which matched with the massive front discs and servo, I was told it had a 427 in it from new but that had gone in an AC Cobra replica, further research by the parts supplier confirmed it was a Police spec. car, most likely a detective's car, it even had a wipe clean panel on the p/s sun visor for date/time/mileage etc.

All I know is it was a b*tch to park but even with the baby 302 in it it was still mega-quick in a straight line.

If you ever fancy being arrested by a police force that doesn't officially exist in a country that officially doesn't exist, go to Transnistria (PMR) and wave your camera around at some military shite. Unfortunately, the ensuing Gulag will feel rather too authentic. Human rights watch accused them of turning off the air supply to their underground cells as an interrogation technique a few years ago, but apparently they have now improved slightly. It is said to be quite an effective method.

This late XJ40 is from Staffordshire. The force ran XJ40s for a number of years.

Just mulling over the opinion that if 20-30 years ago the police used the same criteria for choosing their cars as they today, for example no problem with front wheel drive and buying foreign, we probably would of seen plenty of Tagora V6's patrolling Britains motorways. I think they would of been ace for the job as well.

My dad told me, back in the late 80's I think, about Grampian Constabulary having a couple of Rangies fitted with Sprintex superchargers. Oddly enough, he did a bit of work for Fleming Thermodynamics, the Sprintex folk, but I don't recall if he asked them about it. Any ideas as to the veracity of the tale?

I know for a fact that Fife Constabulary had a couple of Range Rovers on an F plate with Sprintex superchargers. They had a Dymo sticker on the speedo saying "do not exceed 110mph", I believe that was because of the tyres.

110 on All-Terrains would be scary enough I'd think. Still, it's plenty quick enough to show the boy racers on Kirkcaldy prom who's boss...

I definitely remember reading an article in WhatCar years ago about a police force trying a Tagora. Although I was only a kid at the time, I remember a small photo of a Tagora Jam Sandwich. Boobydoo, does this ring any bells with you?

I've got a bit of a challenge for all you chaps who are right into old police cars, as I am myself. I'm trying to find pics of cars used by the East Riding of Yorkshire Constabulary which was eventually amalgamated with Hull City Police to form Humberside Police.

I have quite a few images of the Hull force's cars and the later Humberside ones but East Riding eludes me except for some MG TCs of which a couple survive. I think they predominantly used Austin Cambridges but I can't for the life of me find anything even in local books.
