996 Daihatsu Move. 659cc manual...

Spec wise it's pretty up there - even (non functioning) AC!

Well done on a great move. I imagine that in their natural Japanese environment, where I've read that speeds seldom get much above about thirty miles an hour, Kei cars are superb. In the UK, I suspect less so.ย I'd love to test drive one with a/c and an autobox to see how they cope, but I'm reluctant to take the plunge & buy one in case they turn out to be absolute shite in real life.ย

@GagaStanย well bought. There were plenty cockroach like cars like this all over NZ when we visited - and they seemed to make perfect sense.

Hope it's easy enough to get tiptop and does you well

Had a bit of time to start with the small jobs today. First thing was lights. The rear indicator lenses have started to lose their orange, somi replaced the clear bulbs with orange ones to good effect. My phone camera makes them look much redder than they are IRL.

Next up was investigating the lack of a reverse light. Turns out there was simply no bulb installed - easy fix.

Now to have a little initial look at the carb. Under the bonnet, things initially look quite tame

But once the air cleaner is removed, the real mess is revealed

What a bloody mess. But, all the rubber seems to be still soft a pliable and nothing seems to be cracked or split. But it all needs a thorough going over to make sure - but that's not a job for today.

What I did check was if the secondary choke does open when vacuum is applied to the corresponding actuator, and thankfully it does! While that doesn't diagnose the driveability issues it gives me a bit of confidence that the vacuum side of things isn't totally shot. Because there's a lot of it.

And heres a few shots of the interior. I absolutely adore the fabric! And the little Japanese artifacts despite the car being sold new here in NZ. And I'm quite pleased about the space in the back, the sliding rear seats are genuinely very practical.

And last but not least, let admire the 90s AA fridge magnet that a previous owner has stuck on the back. Living up to the white goods stereotype, and rightly so.IMG_20251027_125551345_HDR.jpg.c17d319d3458b33d220abb50902f0a43.jpg
