1993 BTCC memories

That was 1992, Will Hoy spearing Andy Rouse and himself off.

Then a year later, Will is in the new Carina E leading team mate Julian Bailey in front of the British Grand Prix crowd at Silverstone when Julian harpoons into the back of him with such force he rolls him over, taking both cars out of the race.  I'm surprised Julian didn't get the sack for that.

"The car upside down is a Toyota!" - (Sir) Murray Walker.

Slightly sadly, the above incident is the only thing that race is remembered for and means that Kieth Odor's victory, his one and only in the BTCC, is largely forgotten.

'93 was my favorite year, especially as I've always liked Carinas and P10 Primeras, but also the late arriving Mondeos. I also prefer the pre-aero BTCC, though 95-99 is still very good.

That '93 Silverstone support race was a great result for the Janspeed Nissan, with Wim Percy following in second, but I had no idea what later happened to Keith O'dor back in the day.

Nissan 1-2 as Win Percy was on it that weekend and came through the field to take second.  Those Primeras looked great in the black Castrol livery too.  Shame they fell off a cliff in 94 and then the tragedy of 95

Yeah the Janspeed P10s were my personal favouites, overshadowed by the later P11, with the Carinas second (we dont talk about the Old Spice year in this house, same as we don't talk about the TTE Carinas either).

I think Bailey somewhat redeemed himself by winning Knockhill - may have been the next race I can't recall.

I'll be at the Brands event at the end of the month, too. I went a couple of years ago and really liked it. Might might! be in something appropriate, if I can make it happen.

I preferred the Percy livery with the green sun strip and headlights

Such a shame about O'Dor. I remember reading quotes from Percy, Van de Poele and with Ivan Capelli or Sascha Massen saying he was the real deal. After he was killed Anthony Reid took over the Nissan German program and ended up in those brilliant late 90s RML Nissans so who knows where his career would have gone

I too enjoyed 1993 but I preferred 1994 due to the bigger grids and the last year before they spoiled it a bit with the aero

Apparently Toyota were furious with Bailey and were threating a huge fine which he managed to wangle out of by promising to win the next race, which as you say he then did

I was about 14 back then and just kinda forgot about Janspeed when they didn't show up for the 95 season. It was only years later, when looking up old drivers, did I find out what happened to Keith.

I think I'll go down to Tunerfest at Brands today. Not because I  care for the "tuner scene" (I really dont, though I did when I was younger) but I want some DSLR practice before the CTCRC event.

And the drifters are always good for a spectacle.

There were two similar fatal accidents in 1995, so far as I remember the only Super Touring fatalities at least in the major series .  Cars spinning off and being T boned in the drivers door, Gregg Hansford in a Mondeo a few months before Kieth in the Australian championship was the other

Of course Kieth (he did spell his. name Ki and not the more usual Ke) was particularly unlucky because he was driving the UK car which was RHD , has he been in a LHD car he would likely have survived. He'd just won his first race in Germany earlier that day too

Another interesting fact, he was Jason Plato's cousin

The 'all Beemer' + Cleland finale.....

Muddy Talker classic... "Well, that didn't last much past the first corner!"

.... It was foretold 🫤

Legend. Much more entertaining then than the current cars.

If I ever have to buy a Volvo, I'm buying one from him. I had a mate who was the head valeter at his dealership. He binned Jaguar when he saw where it was going.

We went to the drifting at kings Lynn a couple of years ago. There were all the BMW's taking themselves much too seriously...

And one guy in an Omega who'd obviously just bought it, welded up the diff, and stuck it on the track, with no other real prep.

He was having sooooo much fun! He spun out on every other corner, but he'd had to open both front windows to get the grin out.

I love grassroots Motorsport 😁

If that's your sort of thing and you ever find yourself in Oxfordshire, go to Standlake Arena near Witney.  They have a formula called Drift Rods, which is essentially a mixture of drifting and racing.  Mostly battered Beemers but occasionally something more unusual appears (I've seen an MGF, an MR2, a couple of MX-5s and even a Granada hearse that was being used before it got bangered at the following meeting) and you can either race for the win or show off going sideways and try and win "Drifter of the Day".  Lots of other good classes of racing there too.

some ace home video coverage of the 1992 Knockhill race including Colin McRae drifting his BMW around the hairpin (approx 19 mins in)

I've been watching the 1994 season duke dvd and I noticed how large the front splitter was on the Laguna when they received their aero update;

Was the famous "laguna splitter", fitted to literally every modified car in the 90s, introidced to comply with BTCC rules?Probably not, but the thought hadn't occured to me before.

I really hope they do the 92 and 93 seasons as DVDs. Duke released 91 recently and it'd be nice to plug the gaps in the set.
