Vote for 5 you'd like to see NOT get incinerated and let's see which get a stay of execution.

I'd keep the following:

1) Vauxhall Nova. Yeah they were the weapon of choice for the the average village idiot who had ram raided Halfords but I love 'em.

2) Astra Mk3: Dull as dishwater but incredibly reliable cars and covered thosuands and thousands of miles in various models.

3) Morris Minor. I wouldn't spend hours getting excited by them at car shows and what not but I do like them. Not too horrible to kick round in and the kind of car that makes me smile to drive.

4) Mistubishi Pajero. Would have to be the 2.8TD model though. Loved mine, really nice barge to hoon round in and well equipped if not a little thirsty.

5) I'm struggling here as all the others are pretty toss imho. I'll settle for a Nissan Almera because although they're duller than the Post Office queue on pension day, they do seem to last a long while before rust inevitably creeps up and kills them.

Keep

1) Ford Focus. Not a bad car and a big improvement on the Escort.

2) Rover / mini metro. Good little cars that helped a dying company last a bit longer.

3) Range Rovers. Classic ones are great - newer ones are drug dealer fodder though.

4) MGB. If it was so bad why are there so many left?.

5) Morris minor. Never been into these untill I saw a couple of nice altered ones on retro rides.

Posted

1) Sherpa Coupe... I like a nice early GT, not over restored, on steels. Maybe it's the owners we should be burning?

2) Minor, for the same reasons as stated above. When you're faced with a sea of bland silver shitboxes every day, it's nice to see an old car-any old car- being used, and more often than not it'll be a Minor.

3)Fiat 126... cos it's pure Autoshite, and I love anything small and Italian (hey, i'm a Catholic)

4)Marina. Just because. I reckon the coupes look nice. Don't have a burning desire to actually drive one or anything, but there you go.

5)Alfa 33. It's an Alfa ffs, it's supposed to be a bit rubbish, but also slightly good. And it looks like a brick with the corners shopped off. I do actually want to drive one of these, so at least leave me one?

Posted

Right-oh, here goes. Keep:

1. Fiat 126 - cool little Italian motor

2. Ford Focus - I've actually enjoyed driving a few of these

3. Morris Marina - whats not to like?

4. Alfa 33 - ok, a poor replacement for the Sud, but bloody rare now & therefore pretty damn ace.

5. Metro - love the early ones.

Posted

1) Nissan Almera - actually pretty good car to drive, won't break down

2) ford Focus - mk.1 was a breath of fresh air and will be a future classic. The engine note of the 2.5t

3) Lotus Elise - a small rwd sports car without any electrical gimmicks - what's not to love?

4) BMW MINI - despite being the default ride for estate agents and nail technicians around the land, it's actually a good car. The Cooper S is supposed to be an absolute cracker to drive

5) Fiat 126 - it's Autoshite gold! How is this on here?

Posted

I find it hard to 'hate' cars cos if I don't like them I tend to just ignore stuff, but I will have a go on this one. I think my love of Italian vehicles will probably be obvious, but here goes;

1) Fiat 126. As said above, why?? I'll never get rid of mine. Its ORSUMZ.

2) Fiat 500. I know it's getting common for all the wrong reasons, but it is the best representation of the spirit and the ethos (I don't really know what that means, but it sounds good) of the original than say the Mini or the Beetle. Any way they are selling, so if that means Fiat are doing well, that makes me :D:D:D:D

3) Fiat Punto. OK. Not bothered about having one. BUT there are a lot of them out there, so if that means Fiat are doing well, that makes me :D:D:D:D

4) Ivecos. I like the look of them. Particularly the Turbostar from the Mid 80s - clean lines on the cab of that one. nice. I like the look of the Stralis??? They seem to be on the ball with the military stuff too with the Panther CLV for the British Army. Anyway if they're doing OK that's fine because if Iveco are doing well, then Fiat are probably doing well, that makes me :D:D:D:D

5) Dunno. Stick the Alfa 33 in fifth :)

The rest?? As said, incinerate, could be a big bonfire. With Andy Murray on top maybe. Just for Cavette......

After a loyal string of Fords, I bought an Astra mk3 and I was converted, I've not heard a bad thing said about them in terms of reliability (I've not broken down in mine in 8 years) and build quality, they're just workhorses.

Also Elise. :)

1 - Ford Focus Mk1. Great handling, looked good and a revelation after the Escort. Loved mine, I'd happily have another.

2 - Lotus Elise. Small, great handling sports car with reasonable power. Whats not to like?

3 - Alfa 33. Not their finest hour but it's still an Alfa.

4 - VW Lupo. Especially the GTi and 1.4 16v which were pretty good fun.

5 - Ford Mondeo. Popular for a reason. Decent handling, cheap to buy, plentiful, acceptable looks, generally reliable, V6 goes well.

I'd keep the following, unless fitted with diesel engines.

1) Range Rover - the greatest and most useful luxury car ever made.

2) Ford Focus Mk1 - probably the greatest family hatch ever made.

3) Ford Mondeo - because they drive and handle so much better than the alternatives.

4) Ford Ka - immense fun to drive, simple, comfy, brilliant handling. Shame about the rot.

5) Mercs after the W124 - I want an E55/E63 AMG, badly. Don't care what shape, I just want one. I like them, lots. Ok, the 96-99 ones rotted like a Ka made from an old Alfasud, but they appear to have got things pretty much sorted after that. Besides, the W124 rots pretty badly. I've had two, both needed front wings.

I’d happily keep the following out of our Room 101 :

1) Mk5 Escort onwards - it's really nowhere near as bad as some people make them out to be. The mk6 examples from 1995 onwards handled very well indeed. In my opinion it's a very underrated car in many respects. Having experienced several over the years, I've never had a bad one and to this day, would still have one over just about any rival of it's time - including the disappointing and very sparsely equipped mk3 Golf.

2) Vauxhall Zafira - I’m at a loss as to why the Zafira comes up here, given it’s ‘flex 7’ seating, masses of space and sensible second hand pricing. As long as you avoid the diesels, they seem to be generally very good indeed. Much more robust than the likes of the Renault Scenic - and nicer to drive.

3) Ford Ka - I had one for 18 months and never missed a beat. Handled like it was on rails, very nippy around town, cheap to insure and decent on fuel. I even liked the way it looked right from day one  . My only reservation is that the one I had was the basic model - therefore FM only stereo (two speakers), manual locking and keep fit windows...

4) Audi’s from 1998 onwards - I don’t want to sound too much like an 'Audi fanboy' here but I really fail to see what the problem is :? . They're usually built like brick you-know-what's. I maintain they still have amongst the best of the main dealers (stealers) that I've experienced and the diesels run on forever given the correct care. My only real issue with them is that in terms of ride quality, the S-Lines are so rock bloody hard. As I prefer conservative designs, I quite like most of their latest designs and would happily have pretty much any of them over the equivalent BMW. As I don't drive on the limits of physics or on racetracks, the so-called 'handling' issue wouldn't (and doesn't) bother me in the slightest either.

5) Mini/Rover Metro - Again, underrated motors although we know too well their safety record at the end of it’s run wasn’t exactly something to be proud of. Indeed, early ones were great! Handled well, roomy for a supermini in it’s time, very reliable from my own experience and personally, I really liked the way they looked.

The Mk5 RS2000 was brilliant, unfortunately, the rest weren't. The Mk6 (The oval clock, facelift dash) drove a lot better but was still miles behind most of the rest of the class. I'd rather zip about in a 1.8 Orion than a 1.8 Golf Mk3, but that's not saying much. I'd choose the Golf TDi over the Escort one every time. Then I drove the Mk1 Focus and it just blew the Escort away in pretty much every respect. All of a sudden the Escort felt old, vague and sloppy overnight.

The Zafira is one of the most irritating cars I've ever experienced. The Mk1 was, I thought, awful. Reminded me of a Mk1 Vectra. The Mk2 Zafira actually drives quite well, I've only driven the 110? bhp 1.6 CDTi ones any distance, but they're quite nippy for what they are (once the turbo is giving it some) and they handle quite well. They're quiet on the motorway, but it's on the motorway where it all goes wrong for me in a Zafira. The throttle pedal is on a truly annoying angle that is frankly uncomfortable for me. The drivers seat doesn't go back far enough, the gearlever position I don't mind, and the change isn't bad when they're pretty new i.e <20,000 miles, but after that it all goes to cock. Then there's the horrific unreliability. They're pretty bloody awful. We've got 10 in work that have all had a minimum of £1500 worth of warranty work due to breakdowns, and they're all 09 plates.

I don't know why anybody bought Mk5 Escorts when they had the option of R8 Rover 200/400s, or even Vauxhall Astras.

They are miserable.

Posted

1. Ford Mondeo - a lot better than most of the competition, even if the bumpers are made from eggshells. A lot better than the Sierra as well.

2. Austin/Rover Metro - a lot better than most people think, particularly the post 1990 Rover ones, and kept Rover going for another day.

3. Lotus Elise - What's not to like?

4. Ford Focus - simply a brilliant family car

5. Morris Minor - these appeal more than the other 'standard' classics, and they were a geniune step forward in 1948 (albeit rather old hat by 1965). I would happily have a convertible or van/pick up.
