Cars from 1990

Help me out here, heard of something that I could get in on, but it's set in 1990. Now, with the transit my interest stopped in 1986 (though I know plenty about the Mk3, so not too bad there).

So, what cars would I get away with for 1990? This a 'real life' drama, not Ashes to Ashes, so older stuff from the 80s is fine (which I know about), it's anything that would have been new in 1990 I am not very clear on.

1990, twenty years ago now. How did that happen?

The MK 3 Fiesta would have just came out as well as the Vauxhall Calibra and the Rover 200 & 400 (OMG HEADGAZKET FAIL) models.

In 1990 my parents had this Metro we bought whist away in North Wales staying at my grandad's who owned a Vauxhall Dealership in Ruthin i think, I remember the Anglesea show was on and going with my grandad to deliver a brand new red Cavalier 2.0i L 4x4 to display at the show.

Dad drove us back in this 4 up with all our luggage over the horseshoe pass on the way home to Colchester, It was hell.

Dad hated this car so much that a few months later we sold it for this.

Orange light Sapphire in production until early 90, so no clear front light/smoked tail motors.

Discovery out late '89. (Small square front light "200" shape mind)

Toyota Carina E?

Range Rover 108LSE was about, (just) but no soft dash models. Bugger... it was 1992. How wrong can I be. Senile....?

Mazda MX5

Nissan Almera?

"Rover" Metro.

Mk5 Escort on the H

Don´t forget the wonderful Toyota Camry SV21, the almost new Subaru Legacy, the not-that-old Subaru Leone III, the superb Mitsubishi Pajero L040, the perfect Lexus LS400 etc. ...

Oh yes, Rovers. How could I forget rovers?

My Discovery is a 1990 H.reg but there is no way it would pass for a new car now.

Mk 2 Golf

Breadvan Polo

Mk 2 Astra (Mk3 came out in 91)

Maestro/Montego (if I tidy up my Maestro's doors it might just pass as two years old)

Volvo 440/480/740

Mk 3 Granada

Mk 4 Escort

Wouldn't be too hard to source any of these.

Mazda Roadpacer

UMM Alter

Austin Kimberley

Honda 1300

I think we should get some kind of commission for helping Fred out with her job.

I think I should get some commission for doing my job, but I don't! I do loads of research (remember the Land Rover Ranchrera thread?) for nothing, I only get paid when something actually gets on set!

Vauxhall Astra mk2 & 3 was everywhere, and they're stupidly easy to get hold of.

Mk 3 didn't come out until 1992 on a J plate

Mk2's were everywhere though, As where Volvo 340/360's and Renault 5's.

Yeah! and Rover Metros didn't appear until 1990.

Strangely, the question is about cars from 1990................. Hence why I suggested Rover Metros....

Not sure I see your point like!

I just meant that I didn't think there would be that many about, seeing as they were launched in the middle of the year.

But yeah, they would have been out there.

XJ40's would have been plentiful from 87 onwards. A nice 2.9 base or Daimler 3.6

The ItalDesign Aztec is from 1987 so would look at home in a 1990's TV show.

K series Metros were launched may 1990. (Mine was registered on 22nd may 90 8) )

Citroen XM!!!! car of teh year.

Anyway, in 1990 you'd still see some 70s stuff in daily use too - sometimes I think that around that year you'd have seen a really interesting cross section.

I was just a little kid in 1990 but I recall lots of Beetles in daily use and for some reason the Volvo 440 seems to crop up in my memory of this time. Mk3 Escort would be standard furniture for this of course! A scattering of Mk1 sierras makes perfect sense too not to mention Mk 2 Cavaliers.

What's the production - sounds interesting!

All those GM concept cars that were in Demolition Man.

Sir Tainly, I'm pretty sure the swan car was a quite a rapid machine but the NCAP guys might mark it down on pedestrian safety due to its fire breathing capabilities

Edit, I am mistaken it was hot water it would spray from its beak, not fire.

My folks had a new AX in 89, so thats my 1990 memory. And dad really really wanted a BX.
