Hey this thing really moves, had to overtake a tractor on the way to work and I managed to wind it up to 60 without trying! Impressed with how quiet it is too, if you let off the pedal at 30 with the window rolled down, you can't even hear it running! 90hp isn't it? Something like that. I'd love a go in an injection one. Can't understand why some people say the CVH is a coarse engine, seems smooth enough to me.It's a lot more fun on twisty roads than I was expecting, I knew the handling was good from just cruising around town in it, but I thought with the skinny tyres it would feel a bit twitchy at speed, but it is pretty planted really. Nicely weighed steering too.I think about the only complaint I have is that the interior fabrics are a bit dull, comes with the territory I suppose. Can't really expect wine red velour interiors on an 80s Ford, I imagine to "normal" people they're fine, they look presentable enough. To be fair the seats are pretty comfortable and they've got proper fabric head restraints instead of those vinyl "A-frame" ones.Yeah, good cars basically. I'd like a go in a pushrod one to see what that's like, I imagine that can be arranged.

I always admire the headlining material. It's like the world's largest verruca plaster.

For some reason I have a soft spot for the mk.4, despite the fact I think I've only ever driven one. Really fancy a nice, untwatted XR3i if I get back to blighty. Something like this one

Lovely Escort there Vic/Dan!I always liked the Mk4s, much nicer cars than the Mk5s. Whilst prices won't go mad like RWD Escorts and Cortinas, good examples of these won't get any cheaper!F/G/H reg ones actually lasted reasonable well, the early C/D plate ones rusted like a 70's Alfasud.

My mate had a cream C-plater about 10 years ago, which he was given by his nan. Only had 30-odd k on the clock, but every single panel was rusty, even the roof

Aaah crap i didn't get to meet you.

We should make a thread "Show us your mug" , so we all know what everyone looks like.

Were you the jolly chap who stood next to the Xantia for a while ?

In a bizzare turn of events, this Escort got sold on to another pimp this morning! It wasn't even up for sale. Guess he just knows good talent when he sees it.Ah well, Vic's Escort Service is closed for a week. It'll be re-opening as soon as the latest one is trained up. Stay tuned for updates!

I'm sure you would! I'm pretty sore that I couldn't have had a bit longer out of it to be honest, but if someone turns up and starts waving money at me, that's what happens.Never mind eh, we'll see if we can find you a nice Ghia or something.

I was seriously interested, I asked if it was for sale in my first post.. :?How much did you sell it for?

Posted

Yeah you did, when we remembered that afterwards we felt a bit guilty, but it all happened very fast in very unexpected circumstances, if it`s any consolation I missed out on the stint that I was going to have with it, I only drove it once and was really looking forward to running it for a bit, totally my sort of car down to a tee. As Hirst says, though, bit hard to turn down cash. Do you fancy a Red one?

Posted

Looking at the dates, I had exactly a week out of it. Bit like having a courtesy car - which was the original joke when I started using it.Don't start flogging the red one yet, I've only moved it about 30 yards! I want to admire the graph-paper style interior.

Ive long been toying with the idea of MKIV as my first car, but considering a 1.4 L is insurance group 8, that may be a no go. Im sure Ill end up with one though!

I think now that we're in a new decade (the 10's) these MKIII & MKIV Escorts are going to start grabbing the attention of the classic car world seeing as the MKIV ended in 1990 (and the fact that MKI & II Escorts have now nearly all gone). They make good sense really as they are a neat shape, easy to get parts for nice to drive and reliable too.
