Best anti-rust treatment for bare metal?

The Maestro trailer is almost ready but before it can hit the road the bare metal needs protecting. The A frame and the areas that have been cut and welded are all bare metal at the moment. I was planning to just red-oxide everything and then use coat of hard wearing truck paint to finish it but to be honest I dont know if thats the best thing to do or not!

Are there any ways to ensure the metal gets protected and rust never gets a grip?

I've found that Bilt Hamber's Hydrate 80 is bloody good. On quite a few cars, I've slapped the stuff on and it cures to a black finish. Don't get it on any paintwork though as it stains.

Can it be painted over? And can the stains be rubbed off?

Humm, that sounds quite expensive! I spotted some "rustoleum combicolour" quite cheap. Is that any good?

Rustoleum are a good brand / makeThat's what i have smothered the Fiesta sills with , and they have not showed any signs of rust (yet) ... not even around the welds.- I know that doesn't help - sorry

It can be painted over, but the stains are tricky to remove. Best to mask up well or keep a rag handy. I've got a big pot of the stuff and it goes a long way.

I don't know if you can still get it, but I seem to remeber using some stuff called [i think] Galvafroid which seemed to work

i think you can still get galvafroid, they market it as cold galvanising in a tin, very expensive.

I have used the hydrate 80 stuff and por-15.Por 15 is good stuff but if there is any part of the metal unsealed then corrosion takes hold again even under the por 15 quite easily.I have had more luck with the hydrate 80 which leaves a good hard blackened surface and has outperformed por-15 by a long stretch for me. I have found all bilt hambers stuff to be superb.Having said that it is probably they way I have used them.

I stripped the arches of waxoyl and paint to bare metal, and used zinc primer and then used hammerite spray in the same colour as the body. Works well if you keep them jet washed and they look better than than dusty dirtywaxoyl.
