Nice report Minimad, that seems to sum up the afternoon quite nicely. Your pictures seem to capture the 'charm' of the Douglas's Montego very well. One small point, I knew you weren't paying attention in class regards Toyota model codes because my Corolla is an EE80, not AE, as it has the 2EL 12-valve engine :D:D . I thought your eyes were glazing over halfway through the masterclass !I'll return to see MontegoMan (that name suits him, like a pensioner superhero with age-guessing powers :):) ) next week and see if he's taken the good advice we offered him.

Crap yeah EE !! haha Cummon i'm only "18 , i'm good with boys"

Drawing pins holding up the headlining, I love it! Great for booby-trapping the owner when they fall out.

I can't believe he even wasted his money putting it for test like that, you'd be better of just weighing it in.

It didn't have the gaping holes in the sill/arch when he took it apparently, the MOT guy had to give it a gentle prodding to make it like that :)

Hey that headlining is fucking magic. Unlike the rest of the car which is obviously fucked unfortunately.Weighing in is probably the only option, I doubt even an oval racer would want it if it's that bad. Possibly worth robbing the interior out of it, someone in the Montego scene might be interested in it.

That Montego is brill, it needs preserving just like that and putting in a museum, so future generations can see what a PROPER rusty old BL barge looks like.

Good report minimad.Ill pop round to se Douglas next week as I promised him, and see what he thinks.Sadly, I think he needs to realise that it would be best used for parts now.

Shame about the monty, its thoroughly jiggered though by the looks of it.I would like to buy/own its engine and gearbox (might come in useful one day) but I dont know how/where I would be able to get them out.

By the looks of it, if you leave it parked somewhere for another few months the front end will drop of on its own........

Well I am glad I have seen the rest of it now. If it had been minty all over with some sill rot I would still have been tempted to arrange some sort of whip but the whole thing is pretty jiggered so I fully agree that he is probably better of donating the good bits to the owners club and weighing the rest in. Theres gotta be £20 worth of drawing pins alone in the headlining! Shame though, reminds me of my old mans Renault 9 - 15 years old, minty fresh, a mere 55000 miles and written off by a minor rear end shunt by a drunk driver one night. He was pretty gutted about that too but at the end of the day its only a bit of tin and plastic (or so they say) but sometimes you cant help but get attached can you? Thanks for trying Minimad. MODS - we should have a shiter of the month contest for actions above and beyond and if so I would like to nominate Minimad and his mate this month for sterling Montego Preservation efforts!

Thanks Parky, but all the good work was done by Ian (Ifc), as he drove around like a mad man, and travelled my ass to and from location...and retro80sboy for actually making this thread :D

Top report there, shame that the car is pretty much fucked! Pretty impressive amount of rust, but those bodges are class. In some respects it reminds me of the Nova my college recently had donated to it, the arches and door bottoms are covered in rust, and the fuel filler cap would fall off after a few gentle prods.

Whaddya mean ! I only locked all 4 wheels once :D:D and I didn't end up in a ditch like that 4x4 thing we saw  And I told you, I've calmed down a lot from what I used to be like

This is whats its all about really isnt it? Random strangers coming together to make the world a better place. Not by spreading love or curing disease, but by trying to make sure the world never forgets what a Montego looked like. And that my friends is true brotherly love.LET MAH HEARYA SAY HALLELUJAH!

After our chat I've started to find photos of some of my old motors but like I said I've not got as many as I'd like to have, but to start with here's the back garden as of today. See how many cars you can spot as there are a couple of hidden ones.

Whats happened with this Mongo? I know someone who needs a spares donor.

Dunno what has happened to it (yet)But it would be best if ifc / Ian speaks to Montegoman, as he knows him very well :)

There's one about a mile from me Tim that looks a bit abandoned on someone's drive-ish.Give me a shout next time you're down this way and we'll give him a knock if you want?

Was leaving it till about Friday to give MontegoMan time to alter his superhero persona into RoverMan. He should have had time to get used to the alarm/immobiliser by then and also do a few miles in the 214.His temporary insurance cover will run out next week so should be able to get a decision out of him by then.

Posted

Sounds interesting Billy, I need to pop your vac and polisher back soon so we can ask then.

Good work with the trip to Wrexham there gents - a proper Autoshite roadtrip.

Hey if this mongo ends up getting busted for parts, i'd pay a few zloty for the engine+box and that, and could help with A-frame etc, id stick the enigne in the corner of the garage for a dream conversion on a wedge princess at some point. Thats if the engine is in better nick than the rest of the car of course.

Posted

Then engine didn't sound too bad Mr_B But it was mentioned by MontegoMan, that after afew miles it seemed to lack power.I personally think it needs a bloody good service, a great cob web thrashing and then go from there. But i am sure the people with the powers (Or who know Montegoman) will inform us all(I still call first "dibs" on the radio  )
