Towing with a Trabant

Nah.There is no way it would come apart like that. Its like that Clarkson thing of pulling a Lada apart with 2 diggers. Applause makes me think it was from some comedy show.

Iit was a requirement to had a towhitch on your trab, so you could usefully mobilise & tow a cannon to the front when the west invaded. They tow small trailers/each other OK....

Many, many moons back I used to import Trabs,in bulk.5 of us (1 big car)would descend on a good mate in Germany fortnightly- who advertised that he would take them(for free). He was just deluged. We would drive 4 home -often towing another behind the'better' ones on those early A frames that pushed against the bumper. All would be stuffed full of parts from those we broke.About 75 % made it home OK -roadside engine swops became commonplace (- I could do it in 20 mins eventually).I've numerous tales of Trabbie daftness, and made a lot of (enduring)friends.Still have 5 (P50, P50 estate, Tramp ,P60 & 1100)but dont often getto use anynow-mores the pity.I like them-they're fun

I dont think i've ever seen a P50 before, although I vaguely remember seeing something at the Frome 2CV centre which I remember as being a Zwickau P70, although it could actually have been a Trabant P50. The woman who was in charge that day and showed me round was really impressed that i recognised it as a Trabant (I was about 8 at the time). They had loads of great stuff knocking about that place actually, some unidentified glassfibre special body hanging from the rafters, a cabin-less messerschmit, and one of the super rare Traction coupes. Must go back there one day.....

A bloke I knew raved about them, said it was a bit like driving an old Mini: build up all your speed on the straight, don't slow down for the corners.I'd quite like one at some point, although they seem to break down a lot even by autoshite standards :?

I've a wartburg 353 tourist (estate) that has a tow bar, never used it.can't imagine it would pull much, but more than a trabbi.

Saw a Trabant pulling a conked-out Lloyd at a car show several years ago; it must have been doing alright because it managed to get this far before I got my camera ready:

Here is a closeup of the Trabbie in all its glory; a nice early one:
