What would Gene Hunt drive in the '90s?

Is it just me who's spent an inordinate amount of time pondering this? The 'Tina in LOM is a great piece of car casting (in my very humble opinion), and the quattro is right for A2A as well - in fact Glenister wrote an interesting piece a while back about how that decision was made:

Both the GXL and quattro also satisfy the number one criterion - that they be cool in-period. Part of that, it seems to me, is the requirement that people in the know nod sagely, but equally that it isn't yet iconic enough to be widely recognised (as in the case of the quattro)...

So, with all of that in mind, if there were to be a sequel set in the mid-'90s, what would be the wheels of choice? Bearing in mind the specific time-dependent nature of the 'coolness' factor above, I give you the following three alternatives, dependent on date:

* 1993: Escort Cosworth

* 1994: Fiat Coupe Turbo

* 1995: Impreza Turbo

Wildcard: Golf VR6?

Thoughts, suggestions, blundering personal abuse welcome. :D

Lotus Carlton??BMW Alpina B10 (Was that the 5 Series one??)

Yah, good shout on the Carlton actually - has the requisite icon factor for sure. I thought about slinging an Omega into the list somewhere but the big C is a much better bet...

Surely by this time Hunt would be approaching time to retire from the service, possibly already subject to medication & doctors advice to take it easy. Nice Rover 214SLi and desk-duties are the order of the day I think

Dunno, he didn't look a day older between 1973 & 1981 so by 1995 I doubt he'd even have a grey hair! :wink:

Seemed to mention that he wouldn't be able to afford a Quattro on his wages, so anything like a Cosworth would be out surely?Did anyone stop reading by the time he got to reviewing an R8. zzzI've never actually watched Life on Mars or Ashes To Ashes! Wonder what Bowie song they might nick the title of for the possible 90's version?

They said at the time the only reason they didnt use a granada is they couldnt find one at the time. I definitely reckon sierra cosworth.Saw the new labour campaign poster today showing the pic of gene hunt sat on the bonnet of his quattro with david cameron's head superimposed on and the slogan "dont let him take us back to the 80's"So Cameron is "just like Gene Hunt" Cheers labour, that sounds good to me, I'll vote for him :lol:

Lancia Delta Integrale?Maybe not iconic of the 90's but somehow I can picture it.

:mrgreen: I'd agree that he'd be driving a Sierra Cosworth as well.

The 80s were shite! Not in a good way, just pure shite.

Imagine not having an internet that was accessible to the general public. Not having tiny mobile phones that would double as video cameras, gaming machines & vibrators and that would also carry the equivalent of more than 100 vinyl LPs' worth of tunes on a memory card smaller than Gordon Brown's peripheral vision.

There were no Google street view cars to abuse, no CCTV on every corner and no feckin' jobs.

Gene Hunt's car for the '90s? Easy, has to be an Impreza, the most significant brand name to grow out of that thoroughly amusing decade must have been Subaru and I think that Subaru would appreciate any opportunity to remind the car buying public of that.

So come on, Kudos, get buying up all of the mint, early examples now.

No idea, not got a lot of interest in the 90s (though I suppose I might catch up one day, in about a decade) and there won't be another series anyway.....
