grizz Posted April 4 Author Posted April 4 So after the blue section I rested a bit….. Coffee and a dry bagel. Then back to the next section which was also a bit of a challenge to figure out. It took three returns to complete. Sometimes I would just walk away and return as if it was the first time I saw the car, to establish my own reaction and to gauge how I would do the rest. So I had decided that it needed something to frame up the final centre panel. Brown and Gold. Huhhh ??? Yup…… Brown pinstripes laid around the edges. Sepia Brown applied. I did screw up and not mask it in on the next step, so needed to repaint and mask it a second time. Then Scallops. Not easy to get right in ratio or placement. I chose to freehand them, as I have done with all the pinstripes so far I can honestly say, I am pretty pleased with the results of my line laying. I also created a bit more overkill with a small lace border on the trailing edge, to tie into the roof and trunk design. I am still not quite sure about this. But it is staying. Here goes. . delux, Westbay, Tenmil Socket and 1 other 4
grizz Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 I have picked up from various responses and a few friends who feel safe in flying their true colours via WhatsApp and Messenger that there are real haters of this. One of my friends who has no imagination stopped having fun at the point where the paint started going on. Others have been lost at various points in the process. . Me………?? After last night’s closing shop at 6.30pm SUPER CHUFFED PS. This would blow them minds.
Westbay Posted April 5 Posted April 5 It's a bit like the curates egg ... or ... "SUPER CHUFFED" ... all that really matters at the end of the day grizz and 93fxdl 2
grizz Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 Back to the scallops and lace. I added another two sets of simple scallops into my narrow canvas and stood back Yup…… Nobody’s gonna like this. Perfect. So I masked the framework and added Sepia Brown around the edge. Smugness gets payback fast. But it took me a few hours to realise that I had screwed up. Too much stuff going on. No, I didn’t expect you to understand 😉 . lesapandre, auntiemaryscanary and delux 3

grizz Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 So carrying on from the scallops and frame. Next job was masking everything except the background of the scallops. . Yes, they are stylised flames. If you have an incredibly screwed up imagination. Or maybe just. Scallops. I mixed up some of the Gold paint I had bought for the alloy wheels and started to paint the surrounding area. The gold is a weird paint. Needing about 4-5 light coats to look good. I am hoping that those of you looking and reading this far down, will like what you see. Because I am not changing it. After doing the gold, I walked away for coffee and to force myself not to interfere with it. When I came back 30 minutes later….., I noticed that I had failed to mask up all of the brown pinstripes. I was not really happy. Hey Ho Fix it. . Carl1981, lesapandre, 93fxdl and 2 others 5
grizz Posted April 5 Author Posted April 5 Being as it’s Easter, I think the Scallops may appear more as a nod to the Clergy than hotrod or lowrider. So I masked them up. I also tried matching a few colours with the gold frame. Decided on one to use. Then painted them. Weather continued to be obstructive. Only visible with the naked eye, but I also included a fade from front to rear. Happy with the look. . Westbay, lesapandre and eddyramrod 3
Rustybullethole Posted April 5 Posted April 5 On a really slow connection here so missing loads of pics. Shall catch up properly when i can. I think this is both mad and brilliant. I condone and commend in equal measure. This is just my inconsequential opinion, to each their own. I have also been thinking about wheels... Call me what you will for going with safe bets but wires then cragars spring to mind first. Both not very or at all budget friendly. How about beauty rings for the steels? I feel they would work better with black wall tyres though again is just my opinion. You do you. I trust you will. grizz and eddyramrod 1 1

Despite my intention to remain on a tighter budget than what is happening, mission creep happens every day. The car needs maintenance and has been lacking in this department for a few years. Some things just have a finite life and it’s landed on my shift to have to replace or service it. I own a set of 17 inch wheels that are paid for, need tyres, refurbishment, paint and machining or a set of adapters for the 70.3mm centre bore. Oh, and moving 204 miles from Sandford in Shropshire to me. I have liked them from the start and given that someone else paid, there’s only one other set I would fit. Those Talon wheels I would not fit traditional spoke wheels. . lesapandre 1
Rustybullethole Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Ah yes, I forgot about the gold and shiny ones. Apologies the workings if my brain are still a mystery to me! They are quite unforgettable and a great wheel. The landrover 3/6 spokes look good in gold too. grizz 1
grizz Posted April 6 Author Posted April 6 After the scallops were done I had to find something to do with the last section of the hood. Those reading the actual text here, may be surprised to learn that I took two days to find and decide on a design and colours for this last section. So photos show what transpired. Loads of masking in both directions. Of course waiting for paint to dry and harden sufficiently is frustrating. But I managed. . Westbay and lesapandre 2
grizz Posted April 6 Author Posted April 6 10 minutes ago, Westbay said: 👍 No regrets this time. Remember this chaos?? The shoulders of the car. Ultimately it will end up with 7 different coats of paint if you include the clear lacquer. Of which there will be 3-5 coats. So after the two different coats of cream/beige/off white I did one of my typical things…… added more detail. May have been a mistake in retrospect, but I liked it. . grizz Posted April 6 Author Posted April 6 11.00 am and it’s 12’C in the shade. I need a bit more heat. But we’re ready to mix some paint and get the medium blue along the sides and on the tops of the bumpers. Done panelwipe and checked all the masking. I hope to get the scratched fender from when I reversed the car back down with all the windows masked and scraped by the hedge, fixed as well Another thing that really manifested itself was how deeply inset the wheels are inside the fenders. The car can do with spacers and wider wheels. PS. Pedro managed to rip the soles off his cheap, waterproof walking shoes/boots within a few times of using them. Now we spent more on glue and time trying to make them last a bit longer. Life ehhh. . . eddyramrod 1
eddyramrod Posted April 6 Posted April 6 I can only admire this! It's not entirely to my taste but then it's not my car, and what is good is to see it getting some love, especially as it's an unloved, almost unknown, model over here. More power to your elbow, young man. On a side note: I spent Easter painting a car once. It was 1988 and I had a tomato-red Marina with some Harvest Gold accident repairs, so I hand-painted it in a neighbour's lockup. Then I really splashed the cash and bought it a new front number plate! grizz and auntiemaryscanary 1 1

Then I really splashed the cash and bought it a new front number plate! Harvest Gold !!! Love it. Thanks for your reply. 34 years ago I designed and built a house in Simons Town, Cape Town. Builder built just the dried in shell, I completed the rest. Check Streetview or Satelite view of: 72 De Villiers Way Glencairn Cape Town, South Africa. When I exchanged the front door key for final payment, there were three major changes I would have made, despite designing it myself. So seeing the value or beauty in something that you don’t necessarily want, is a great outlook. Thanks. eddyramrod 1
grizz Posted April 7 Author Posted April 7 So feathers, sneakers and side panel paint aside…… All irrelevant to progress on the paint at hand. Flames 🔥 Well, pretend flames or sperms if you are my wicked ex wife observing from afar. Masking done, the next job was to mix up a lighter blue to a tone that would work for my eye and vision. Using blue and some of the silver I have, I. Mixed about 150nl of paint. Plan was also to add the same colour to the trunk lid vertical aspect and to add a small graphic there later. This will connect or tie together the front and back of the car. Once again, fine tuning the small £10.00 ebay gun gave me great results. This is an awesome piece of kit. After unmasking the paint, I had significantly concerned eyeballs. Not sure if the colour worked. Tailgate, same story. So I quickly (no, took forever) masked it all over again. Ready for dark blue. Tailgate as well. . Westbay, FakeConcern, 93fxdl and 2 others 5
grizz Posted April 8 Author Posted April 8 So the follow up to the flames being surrounded by blue, had to be more blue. Right?? But this time we’re going to use full strength blue and also cover the tailgate where I was not happy with the colour scheme. Oh, and I added some details that came out mind blowingly good. It has actually created a Holographic image that will disappear completely if you drop your line of vision. I have not done any video editing for some time as it’s tiring and time consuming. I don’t expect most people to understand this. So back to the image inside of the image. I also had some blow through from the dark paint. Tried to wipe it with thinners and created a smudge on the custom mixed paint that had not fully cured. Bugger !! Of course the smudge has to be repaired, it could not have landed in a worse spot. So a bit of thinking had me create a spider that will cover it. Not ideal, but perfect. Don’t like it?? What would you do?? Pictures. . 93fxdl, 666jjp, MrBig and 2 others 5

grizz Posted April 10 Author Posted April 10 Repairing the smudge on the hood/bonnet. Practiced the painting on some scrap before going out to the car. I am happy with the outcome. Added some spiders web to it’s bum. I don’t think it’s something I would have done unprompted but the damage I caused forced my hand. Two steps forward and a stumble backward. Back on editing some bits together. Video of painting and not so much paint drying. . Westbay, GlenAnderson, delux and 3 others 5 1
grizz Posted April 11 Author Posted April 11 Spiders webs, Spider, Sperm, Scallops…… Some Feathers. So much stuff. Want to see the combination together? grizz Posted April 11 Author Posted April 11 Interrupted regular transmission As nobody wanted to go fund me Or buy them outright for me PaulY suggested I just go fund me I think everyone knows about me And the wheels coveted by me These were for sale on Bay of E Way too shiny, corroded for me But the design would make I happeee. So what’s a guy to do?? Go out and blow a wad of cash in pursuit of perfection. .
grizz Posted April 12 Author Posted April 12 Those feathers The beige, cream, off white shoulders. So for those keeping score…… Those who actually read the text……. How many layers now on here?? So I decided that I should change it because it was underwhelming. GOLD !!!! So more masking taking time. The plan was to do a gold misting over the beige and still have the feathers visible. It looked lovely with one slow pass, until. That bloody aerial. Whichever way you approach it, you will end up with part being darker and part light. And before you know……. SOLID GOLD. BUGGER !!!! . auntiemaryscanary, eddyramrod and 666jjp 3
grizz Posted April 12 Author Posted April 12 Unmasked the gold. Created some damage Why? Because impatient Paint was not fully dried up yet. So paint flakes from the plastic recycling bags and other unmasking that I have been using very successfully, managed to attach to the paint. A bit like a popcorn husk in the back of your throat. Won’t kill you, but has to go. So approaching with care I managed to spend another hour on recovery. Two steps ahead and all that. So I actually used reading glasses to help me see clearly, as well as the zooom on my phone camera. Then my most magical tool…… well a few of them. Finger nails, carefully picking, scratching etc. Eventually some G3. Polishing compound over the gold, carefully because gold is super unforgiving. I think it came out fine, despite my misgivings. At two foot you cant see it, further back, after 6 coats of clear lacquer and buffing……… It will not be a problem. Patience ?? . Carl1981, eddyramrod, MrBig and 1 other 4
