if you hit somebody from behind driving at 90 mph the chances are that you will kill somebody in the ensuing mayhem. The person you hit may well have been culpable as well, but your speed will be taken into account and you won't be seeing home for a while.

Nonsense.
Your confidence is very revealing in the context of this thread. Why do you say "Nonsense"?

Dearie fuckin' me.This new job of mine involves quite a bit of motorway driving and I don't think it's the people in the 'flash' German cars who're the issue - and not just because I happen a 3 series at the moment.I've just this minute got in after driving back from Yorkshire (in a Toyota Avensis diesel). I was driving in the same way I drive anything, not fast enough to draw attention, not slow enough to get in the way. Flowing along, on cruise. Proper lane discipline, keeping to the left wherever reasonably possible.I was tailgated twice on the way back. Once by a motorway maintenance Sprinter pick-up that was doing around 95 when there was nobody in front of him, and once by a tit in a '10' plate Audi S3 who I suspect was either a car salesman or a rep who'd just picked up his new car - and was seeing how fast it'd go. Neither of these were irritating, I moved out of the way as soon as it was possible and sent them on their merry way. The S3 was bloody quick as well. The most irritating people on the road were the ones who were bimbling along at 60ish in the middle lane when the left hand lane was clear for miles, and the ones who when 100 yards behind the typical Artic Vs Artic 56 mph overtaking combo decided to just pull straight into lane 3 / fast lane / overtaking lane without taking the blindest bit of notice that there was a long, steady and well spaced train of stuff doing 85 happily there already. As far as I'm concerned pulling into a lane causing other people to brake is the most dangerous thing you can do on a motorway, far more dangerous than cruising along at 90, or indeed 150 if the motorway is clear. They take your licence off you in Germany if you tailgate or if you pull out on someone who's going more quickly than you, and rightly so. The whole "70 is the legal limit" excuse is mainly only used by nervous and from my experience very poor drivers. They're the people who cause crashes and then end up in the papers blaming anyone else for their poor driving.People doing the "I'll hit the brakes, HARD" thing that Panda mentioned should be banned from driving, for life, for trying to cause accidents through utter, utter stupidity. Do they not realise that 1.8 tons of 3 year old Mercedes E class at 85 mph is a lot safer than a lot of the cars that the '70 is the legal limit' practitioners use to cause misery on the roads? The Merc will outbrake almost anything out there as well.

Oh fuck aye, and the ones who drive in the nearside lane, come up to a lorry doing 56mph and then slam the brakes on because they can't get out.Don't these dicksplashes ever consider using the mirror a few hundreds yards before then pulling out when safe to do so?

shit, I went for a nap and when I woke up this had happened. Obviously i blame myself. NOT ON MY WATCH! etc

Finally, another road user with sense rather than some old duffer with a severe arse/elbow recognition issue. Good post Pete, agree entirely.

Gotta be honest, as a UK resident, if I clock a motor in my mirror i do not expect them to be doing 120mph so I might very well 'pull out on them'. At 120 they'd have to pull up sharp and probably give me the V's, at 80 they probably wouldnt have to use the brake at all. If I lived in germany where one car in 5 might be doing 120mph, i'd probably drive differently. does that make me a bad driver?

When I logged in 5 mins ago I thought "wow! 6 pages of people wanting Petes 318is!"

No it doesn't. If you are doing 80 for instance, have a look in the mirror to check its safe to pull out you would see a car in the distance but probably not be able to tell how quickly it was approaching.120 is far too fast if there is any other traffic about though.

I have lived in Germany and travelled extensively there. Their lane discipline is what you'd call 'firm but fair' where the drivers of slower cars know their place. They have a slow lane for trucks/shitters, a middle lane for medium fast stuff and the outside lane for big BMW's, Mercs, Porsches and stuff. It's a system that works well and these days, and the 155 mph lunatic faction isn't what it used to be. You quickly learn to be alert and you concentrate. Holland and Belgium is where you find the stupidly aggresive driving now. France isn't bad.In Germany you don't find the hordes of gormless idiots sat doing 63 mph in the third lane on a 4 lane motorway with their thumb up their arse.

It's not unusual to cruise along the motorway at 85-90 mph and not have to brake for 10 or 15 miles at a time. The main reasons for having to slow are lots of slower traffic being funnelled into lane 3 by the Artic V Artic 56 mph Grand Prix, roadworks, phantom brakers and absolute morons sitting in L3 at 69.9 mph for mile after mile. They're never going to sort out the phantom brake problem, but I firmly believe that Artics should not be allowed to overtake during busy periods - easily managed with all the cameras and sensors on the motorway and dot matrix signs, raising the speed limit on a clear dry motorway to 90 mph, and introducing a motorway test for anyone caught tailgating / brake testing / lane hogging.

Blimey, in the time it took me to get home and cook dinner this thread seems to have gone mental!I personally drive to suit the conditions, and often that entails driving at over the NSL on motorways*, to be honest those who bomb it down the outside lane expecting those who are using the motorway proporly i.e Keep Left, with the self assertive right that those in lesser cars should not hinder there progress in any way, are just as dangerous as those who pull out without looking, a combination of them both is downright lethal. Hence I try and avoid both. I would say that in my opinion a large percentage of vehicles that drive in this fashon are mid to top range German cars, but only as a certain demographic of people are buying them, remember its not the cars its the drivers.. I'm sure if you look at cartoons of the typical 'road hog' in the fifties he/she was generally driving a Jag.Oh and RBJ, I'd appreciate you keeping your condesending comments to yourself. (Meaning the ones directed at myself after my last post)Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and just because it's not in line with yours - doesn't make yours correct and theirs not.The word forum, does it not mean a place of discussion, not an excuse for a slanging matchWe've covered this topic before, in depth, funnily enough with similar results. Anyone remember Mr Stirling?Anyway, I do like your 318is Mr M, however for some reason they always seem ludicously expensive to insure, at least twice the cost of my current Volvo. Dunno Why...*private of course m'lud

I'd certainly be in favour of an increase in the motorway speed limit.Won't happen of course. The environutters, safety campaigners and the like would see to that

Bollocks. They have this restriction on parts of the A14, yet the truckers just totally ignore it and continue to duel at 100kmh regardless.

They've got it on the M54 (I think) as well, seemed to work last time I was there.Simple, get the Army involved. Drag 'em back from Afghanistan, load of artillery and tell 'em to fire at any truck that brakes the rules :)

100kph! We should be so lucky! 85kph is the restriction. If we didn't have speed limiters fitted this Elephant Racing would not happen.

I think it's good not to increase the motorway speed limit. The 70mph limit seems fairly loose, really. If you upped the limit by (say) 10mph, people who average about 85mph (because you can generally get away with it) would likely start doing 95mph for the same reason. Just set off earlier and stop being in such a huge rush and it won't be a problem. As for the people who floor it down the outside lane in German motors, that'll be due to the vast amount of them being leased out as company cars. There used to be loads of Sierras/Cavaliers duking it out not that many years ago. Whatever sales reps are given, they'll go down the outside in a hurry, it's what they do. All they want to do is get to the Premier Inn so they can eat all the complimentary biscuits, watch some pay-per-view porn and possibly meet Lenny Henry.

I stayed in a Premier Inn on Saturday.

No complimentary biscuits.

No pay per view porn.

No Lenny Henry (although the lady on reception sounded just like him)

Times really have changed.
