1990 Avanti Saloon

Y'all remember Avanti, right? With their ugly cars based on Studebakers, and their later ugly GM based coupes?

Apparently in 1990 they built a whopping 100 four door saloons. Too shitty to be classic, too rare to be shit. They are shite.

Not sure about the platform. I am pretty sure these were Chevrolet Caprice based.

I disagree, the original Studebaker Avanti (not based on, was an actual model) is a fine looking motor*. After Studebaker went bust and the Avanti company was set up to produce 'replicas' is when they went a bit downhill.

Never seen a 4dr before though, definitely qualifies as Shite, any company that contiues producing a car designed un the very early 60s well into the 80s deserves some resptecp.

I'd probably roll one...

My that really is a horrible design lash up! Rear 3/4 view makes me think of a Bristol somehow.

Tatally agree! the Studebaker original was so good. Along with the AMC Pacer this has to be one of my fave Yanktanks (apologies to UglyAmerican!)

I kind of like the rear end with the bay back window and the peaks on the rear wings, would pobably look quite sharp if it were a two door, and did'nt have that front end......or that stance.....or those wheels...or the thick door frames....or the letter box screen.....Fuck it.... it's awful.....

Some of the details are a bit 'off' like the dour wheels which let it down, but I like that Avanti sedan.

Hahah yeh thats actually scarily accurate. I was always fascinated by the extention of the Avantis life, it didnt even look too old when it was finally stopped, but certainly an incredibly niche product by that time. It does not suit being a 4 door though, thats just meddling with near perfection.

I had a summer job in North Carolina in '99 and there was a Studebaker Avanti used to park in the car park where I was working. It was gold, and I thought it looked great in the flesh - probably the only Loewy design I really like. I'm not sure it works as a four-door though, and the square headlights spoil it a bit too.

Spot on Brammy, the original was by Raymond Loewy, in my opinion (and many others :) the greatest industrial designer of the 20 th century. Every detail of the Avanti was sublime, for example just look at the emblem:

You just can't improve on the original, the four-door is just unbalanced and the effect is spoilt.

BTW we have an Avanti kitchen, must get one of those emblems to stick on the fridge :)

I agree with you there. He's phenomenal. But while I like his vacuum cleaners even the Avanti coupe isn't a fave for me.

I am old enough to remember the Avanti as a new model, it was an "unusual" design even then. It has sort of grown on me over the years even though I don't think I have seen one in the flesh. The original design is much better than the 4 door which is made ugly by the door design which does not suit the styling, and it's a very plain jane car, needs a bit of bling.
