My dad mentioned yesterday that a great uncle has scrapped his 20k from new motor for a hyundai last week. I dont know what type of car it was other than it was a 3 cylinder. Dad was speechless about it as the car was immaculate.Ive never forgiven him for not giving me his Hillman Imp he promised me when I passed my test. Owned from new and scrapped after it failed an MOT on a bit of welding in 1997. Old git.

I'm sure there's one person on here who'd defend the scheme.

the old cars dont really get scrapped, they get SOLD on to companies like u pull-it.com and such like

I think this whole thing about the money going overseas is a bit shortsighted. Our Fiat was 8720 after scrappage which means that we paid £1137 in VAT so the govt has £137 in VAT they wouldn't have had if the scheme hadn't been in operation.

I still can't understand why anyone would lay out over 8k for a car.

never mind a korean one, the Hyundai i have is a terrible car

I still find it hard to believe that anyone would lay out 8 large for a car.

I would have said the same too a few years ago. But there are a few reasons we went for a new car.1. Compared to back in Australia, a lot of people in the UK seem to see maintenance as something you do when your car breaks down or starts running rough.2. My 406 had 2 HGF's in a year :(3. The 500 is about £200 cheaper to insure3. About £180 less to tax each year as well as using less fuel4. We got to choose exactly what spec we wanted5. Service intervals are longer6. We'll always know exactly what's been done to it.7. Residuals are good on the 500 so 8 months after we got it, it's worth £40 more than what we paid for it according to the Vauxhall siteI won't lie, it would have been cheaper to buy an old car, but a brand new engine in the car as well as suspension, brakes etc but for someone like myself who fully intends to keep this car till it's a pile of rust, buying new makes a lot more sense than it does for those people who get rid before a car even gets to going through its first MOT.

£8000? I don't see why people pay more than £800 for a car!Yes, I have to do a bit of tinkering to keep the fleet healthy, but I've got four fully-working cars on the road at the moment for about the same as the VAT the government earns on a new car sale. (yes, I am ignoring the £4000 odd that I've spent on restoring the 2CV...)

I guess I'm not going to be popular on here then ;) I always said I'd never buy new so I'm just a big hypocrite anyway but if the 500 lasts 20+ years with just a bit of regular maintenance I'll be happy and it's nice not to have to wonder if some idiot has ragged it or just never serviced it.

and of course its rather nice having a new car.

It is, but to be fair I'd much rather get the wifes Subaru resprayed, have the rust cut out, get new suspension in it, get it completely rebushed, maybe even get the interior retrimmed and just generally give it a new lease of life. The problem is justifying it all to the wife. I think I'm going to try and trick her slightly by suggesting that we get the rust cut out and when that's done it'd be silly to leave it with patchy paintwork so a respray is needed

New cars are very nice. they smell nice and theres no rust. Id hate to own one and watch it depreciate though!

Hardly earth shattering news from the Daily Hate there really  As above, new cars are all well and good but from a financial point of view don't make that much sense if you borrow the money for it and then sell it after three years. If we were less of a throw away society and actually bought a new car when the old one had worn out and kept the new car until such a time as it was worn out then it would make far more sense, rather than buying a new one every couple of years.

Hi, Greg Mitchell here, I dont know why folk bother with the scrappage scheme! they could just sell their old car and then barter a massive discount off at the dealers, thus saving themselves a load of grief, money etc

OH NO, WHAT AM I SAYING, MY WIFES GONNA KILL ME

Depreciation is only a problem if you sell it though :)

Quite agree, before scrappage came along dealers were offering obscene discounts on most cars. The 500 was different because the most discount people were getting was about £400 so for the 500 people were getting a genuine discount on scrappage. But people are right, it did get used as an excuse to raise prices and in the end people were probably just getting the same discount as before or less PLUS some people were getting rid of really good cars and because of the ridiculous regs, some people were having to spend extra money to MOT cars which then got scrapped. How was that environmentally friendly? As you'd expect me to feel if I'd spent a crapload of money on a new car I think I got a decent deal because I bought something that didn't already have big discounts. I got rid of something that was worth virtually nothing which was going to cost me a few hundred to get fixed at which point the electrics probably would have given in. It also wasn't an incredibly rare car or a good example in any way shape or form. As for the plonkers getting rid of something which was actually worth something or rare, well that IS a great pity and wasteful for no good reason.

Jesus, I didnt realise a 3dr 1600 Focus sets you back £18K!!

Corporations find out new way to make money on the backs of government. What a surprise.

I wouldn't mind a new car for a lot of the reasons 504GL listed, but there are no new cars I'd really want to buy.In fact, my current requirements date potential cars to 8 years old at newest...

To be fair, if we were all the kind people people who cherished the latest plate and were on the main dealer's mailing lists, we wouldn't be on Autoshite!I prefer to spend less on a car than a major service costs on a new car. I am Autoshite. However, other folk like new cars so let's just leave them be eh? Scrappage threads are boring now.

Up until recently I would have agreed. I can count the number of current cars that I'd want to own on one hand. I really wanted a Panda but the wife felt that it was a bit postman pat and much preferred the 500  For me the Panda is pure essence of car without unnecessary bling :)I'd still give my left testicle for something Italian or French and from the 70's :) For me the 70's were the absolute pinnacle of car design/style

They do smell nice, that's true. Most of my cars smell stale. Or slightly damp.Depreciation is my main objection to new cars. It's just terrifying! Ok, so I have to spend a bit to keep my ropey old fleet going, but I'm paying people I don't mind giving my money to, not finance people, car salesmen or just burning a handful of notes every day.I also despise the lack of visibility with new cars. Don't know how the Fiat 500 fares but the Honda Civic is like driving around in a suitcase. It's unzipped at the front so you can peek out but rear visibility just doesn't exist really. The Renault 21 is great - loads of thin pillars and actual glass. Superb.

New car smell tends to make me want to be sick. It always has. All those new plastics giving off dodgy fumes.

Apparently new laws mean they're not allowed to put plastics in which give off fumes. One good thing I guess :)

It's fugging shit for checking your blind spot. Funnily enough it scored 2nd top in the What?!?!?!? Car? visibility test.

As you can see the view over your shoulder isn't great. If you've got a convertible and the roof is down you can't see anything out the back either.......
