Yeah that's another problem with modern diesels, they are way more complicated than the straight petrol equivalents.I think people still harbour dated views about diesels though, I found a "What Diesel?" article or letter some time ago featuring a taxi driver and his modern common rail minicab - I think it was a Hyundai. His reasons for buying a diesel? Better cold starting and easier maintenance.Oh dear.

I wouldn't be buying another Zafira after the first one turned out to be a heap of shit- fool me once and all that.

Yeah, I kind of noticed that (a little) when the DW10 HDi took over from the XU9D donkeys (same bottom, different head) - however the lower powered 90 BHP HDi seems to be holding its own and not causing as much grief as the 110 variant, and thats the one I had in the Xantia, then the Multispace. So I sort of thought "boggo spec Zafira, with 120ps donkey - will be OK....."

Wrong - Diddy - Wrong - Wrong !

Ahhh, for something big with an XUD donkey and no bloody silly soot filter system.

Re the buying another Zafira - suggestions welcome for something else with 7 seats and something like the Flex 7 seating system then...

NOT AN LDV CONVOY!

I can sell you my 405 and you can stick a park bench in the boot - job done!

I'm still not a fan of Dr Diesel's Evil Invention being fitted to cars, and when I rule the world, they'll be banned and anyone who's ever tried to justify driving a diesel by using the old "Well, it's got lots of torque" argument will be hunted down and beaten with a 455ci Oldsmobile crankshaft until they admit they're just cheapskates.

My diesel doesn't have much torque at all, what will you do with mine?

I'm a cheapskate and proud, but I do prefer the way diesels drive. It reminds me of the way petrol engines were before the manufacturers fucked them by chasing impressive peak power figures etc.

We looked at a Sharan today for 'Er Indoors, bloody expensive but then it was at a main dealer with 8,000 miles on it - but it had a 1.9 TDi -is that the same one they have been doing forever?? Seating options seemed better than all the smaller stuff we looked at.

It'll probably be a pump duse engine, quite a complicated effort too.

The Sharan 1.9 will be the prehistoric 1.9, yup. Not that bad as they go, bit rattly but they do seem to go ok. VAG 505 oil is needed though, and it ain't cheap - cheaper than not using it as they tend to gunk up the intercooler and kick out a billion fault codes otherwise..

Iiiiinteresting. Obviously not going to buy the dealer one (£16k  ), but there's an '03 alhambra up for two and a half with a shade over 100k which might be a good bet, we only went to VW to make sure the Poglets seats fitted, and that Er Indoors could drive/park it.

Post-2000 1.9s are, in the main (I think!) Pumpe-Duse, which tends to mean they are fussy about their oil as Pete notes. I paid £24 for 5L of proper 505.01-spec Quantum lube when I last serviced one of these engines. The older simpler ones were 90/110/130bhp, PDs are 100/105/115 I believe. The 100 and 115 go all right in a Mk4 Golf (the latter is v. nice in GT spec with the six-speed box).Two-point-five for a seven-year-old Alsharanagalaxy with 100k on it sounds pretty reasonable to me (but then I'm no expert on car values!). Check if it's been run on the "Long Life" service interval though.

Is it safe to say that at the moment diesels are a bit crap compared to what they were like 8+ years ago?I drove a 3 litre Saab job during the summer and while it was quick enough when on the boil, the power band was quite pathetic and just wasnt relaxing to drive during a stop/start journey.

Most seem to be like that, although the *30d BMWs go like stink, as do the big V6 Merc diesels. They're both very obviously diesel when they're cold though..Drove a newish Xtrail diseasel the other day and for the first 5 minutes I was sure there was something seriously wrong with it because of the noise it was making. Rattly as fuck with hyuuge amounts of turbo whistle. It did quieten down somewhat once it had thoroughly warmed up.

That's the complaint I have about modern petrol engines. It's taken a bit longer with diesels but it's happened for the same reason- obsession with headline figures.
