X type 2.2 diesel 6 speed automatic woes.

So Papa D in his infinite wisdom has, rather than throwing money at the entirely sensible Kia he's been smoking about in, binned it off as a bad idea and purchased a rather tidy (sills and all) 2008 X Type Jagwaaar.

Unfortunately it's a piece of shit, as is typical of my Dad buying without consulting with either of his kids.  We've already had to do the EGR and it was the £300 version that you can't just block off, the wheel bearing was fucked and despite having a full years MOT has balljoints that were baggier than  an adult actresses nether regions after a rather intense day filming with the biggest and brightest of the industry.

Having purchased the wrong driveshafts for it (as the inner CVS are also making a grumble and have had the boots cut, packed with grease and then taped back together) I've also noticed that the short shaft has a LOT of movement beyond what I'd expect a CV to do where it goes into the diff.

I suspect it's got a shagged diff carrier bearing but I know NOTHING of these gearbags.. can anyone give me any pointers as to whether this is something that can be sorted by a competent spanner man or will this need me to find him a reconditioned gearbox?

Thanking you kindly.

Just to give an idea of the absolutely amazing attention to detail paid by the last gibbon who wielded their magic spanners on this... Here's what greeted us when we removed a front wheel.. IMG-20220305-WA0002.thumb.jpg.c2a4b4ea6f437ccf8786750e0744fb25.jpg

Luckily we were able to repair the threads and replace the nut with one from the wheel bearing kit we also fitted.

What sort of movement? Inny-outy (axial) might be ok if it needs to 'plunge' with the movement of the suspension. Radially not so good.

How far do you go on an old x-type before you admit defeat? In other words: what other horrors lie beneath?

Radially.

If this was my car I'd have tapped out before buying any parts.. it'd be sold with the faults advertised and I'd take the hit on the chin tbh.

My Dad is a special breed of parts darts player though..

If I get time between jobs!  I'm mean to be doing a 70s Beetle still and then that Del Sol I bought 😅

Last time I saw the Kia it wasn't bad enough to just bin. That Jag , however, looks like something out of BCA's  special WBAC shagged out section.

He and I had a heated discussion on why the Jag was a fucking stupid idea mate.

I've spent a lot of this afternoon being told that no one has driveshafts for this car, and you can't buy inner CV joints for it, they're unique to the 6 speed automatic gearbag.

STILL trying to find some sensibly priced driveshafts for this!

Either no stock, or £300ish each and a long lead time.

Does anyone know if the shaft is shared with another car?, I know Volvo and ford used the same 6 speed auto ASIM gearbox in some of their stuff.

would the be same a mondingo?

I don't think the Asim 6 speed auto ever made into into the MK3 Mondeo and the X type is on that platform not MK4

What part of them has actually failed, couldn't you rebuild them using the CV joints from the above part number list and retain the shafts themselves assuming they're ok?

I haven't looked but I'd hazard a guess new joints would be cheaper than the whole lot

OK, so I've used this site: https://www.1stchoice.co.uk/ to ask for a LH drive shaft. The following breakers claim to have stock:

https://a-zcarparts.com/ reckon they have one for £50

https://www.approvedgarages.co.uk/Garage/Macclesfield-Garage-Services/ for £95

https://www.yell.com/biz/aah-automotive-solutions-birmingham-9264912/ for £295

All plus the twat, probs.

Try phoning?

sorry for the back up updates.. Had some other stuff to deal with.

So the car is still soldiering on, it's had the outer CV's done, the wheel bearing done and I'm waiting to get the call to say the gearbox has shat itself any day now.

It's actually not making any odd noises, clunks or bangs though, which is nice.
