FALKEN KREST

Hey my Cavalier has been delivered today, I cant be arsed going to check it out though as its raining!!! I'll have a look tomorrow.

Posted

I can get a pair of 165/80 Falkens for £4 more than those Kingpins. And if I go down to 165/70, I can obtain some fancy Yokohama "low-pros" for a quid less! How about that eh?

You don't get any shite points for running Falkens or Yokohamas though. Loser!

I've used Kingpins in a slightly different tread design before, they are GR8, but they don't have a silica compound (gr8 4 grip) like most modern winter tyres which limits them a bit.

Every time I look on the Internet at tyre prices, rubbish ones are £30 and "fancy" ones about £35. In all honestly, I just buy them for the pretty sidewalls and glossy black sheen.

The tyres on the Stanza now would suit you quite well, I think most luxurious one on there is a single Trayal.

I see Trayal make explosives too, I hope that isn't a portent.

I used to get tyres called "TECHNIC" cheap cheap ten dorrar. Looked very like Pirellis, decent all-weather grip, didn't last but didn't cost much. Strangely, the first car I got them for was my Stanza.

Did you buy that Cavalier slusher Mr. B?

Yes I did!!! My Mrs was away for the evening.

928 is all radiator'ed and belted up and running lovely again, just got to take it to my mates next week to flush the gearbox and do the engine oil / filter then it's off for a test :)

Day 2 of this weekend brings me the joyous task of replacing the gearbox in the 109. Floors out, seats out, props off, overdrive off, box out through nearside door, swap parking brake mechanism and clutch slave bracket onto replacement box, refit is a reversal of removal (yeah right) and then back to work on Monday, I'll be glad of the rest. All because I smashed the layshaft to smithereens on Thursday night. Still go home though, dropped it into low 4th and used Overdrive for the faster bits up to 28mph.

Heres what i've been doing today (groundhog day)!

Fitted a new crank seal and boshed the gearbox back in, hopefully finish the job off tomorrow.

Technics were retreads. They claimed to be better than conventional remoulds but I never worked out how. My old Saab 99 had a pair when I got it, it's the only time I've ever been able to read the original tyre name on a remould/retread.

Passat random turbo failure looks like a fifty quid part to sort out so will get one when I find one somewhere. Did an eighty odd mile trip in it yesterday and I'm getting used to asthmatic wheezy 'performance'. I've left getting it fixed so long because I don't usually go very far in it so the turbo mostly works ok and as said previously trhe economy it's (only) saving grace.

Vespa: still sat in garage, need to split the spare wheel, investigate cause of puncture and fit new tube. Don't fancy repairing the old one in case it lets go one day. Also need to get the panel lug welded back on as it's flapping about like a bastard. I have also got to get the new clutch cable inner fitted as the last one was a lash up and get some headstock screws and re-fit it properly. The annual Christmas toy run to the hospital is coming up and it's supposed to be a belting day.

Cavette junior has almost finished his first block of ten driving lessons and is doing quite well. Instructor thinks another ten lessons should do him right and the hunt for something not incredibly stupid to insure continues. Best quote so far was £2,500 on a 1980 Mini but God knows what he'll end up with.

My Bora seems to develop more problems daily, Since i bought it 2 1/2 months ago I've already replaced the rear brakes and one rear wheel bearing, one front suspension upper bush and a intercooler pipe and the fuel filter and a door mirror that fell of on the A14.

Now a front wheel bearing is rumbling, the power steering is starting to get loud on lock, the front suspension upper bush on the other side has gone so the front knocks like buggery and the fuel economy is crap, I'm sure i still have a air leak on one of the turbo pipes, Needs a pair of CV boots and the drivers electric window seems to play up by going half way up then going back down again on it's own.

I might get rid off it again soon, The annoying thing is that in the 18 months i owned my Passat i never once had a problem with it apart from a flat battery.

Move it on ASAP. Some cars just won't stay fixed no matter how much money you pour into them and it looks like this is one of them.

The intermittent missfire on the Saab appears to be distributor-related - I spent a happy half hour under the bonnet yesterday investigating. It appears to be number 4 cylinder which is missfiring (plug was covered in petrol and the electrode tip wasn't as shiny as the other three plugs), and above about 1500rpm when it is missfiring you can hear arcing taking place somewhere in the region of the distributor. I've just got to fire it up after dark (so not long to wait now  ) to make sure it isn't the leads, otherwise I'll get a new cap'n'arm ordered and hopefully that will cure it.

Jacked the Justy up yesterday between rain showers to investigate the brake pipe that needs replacing for the MoT. Typically it's the most awkward bastard to get to of any of the pipes on the car - the front is fine because it runs along the inside sill, but it then disappears up and over the top of the fuel tank, to come out round the rear crossmember and into the flexi from behind (so more or less impossible to get to without lying underneath the car, which I'm not doing when it's supported by a £9.99 Aldi jack). I have a feeling the replacement pipe may end up getting rerouted slightly...

Hey Wuverelli, When I had to do a load of rotten pipes on Ms_Bol's car a fortnight ago I bought a nifty brake pipe flarer like this one:

AK5063.jpg

its a Sealey 'AK5063' and cost £32 or so delilvered from these boys:

http://www.pvrdirect.co.uk/

I used it 'on the car', so as not to remove massive long pipes where only the end of the pipe was rotten. Chop the rotten bit off, make a flare on the chopped-off end on the car, then make up a section to replace just the bit you've chopped off rather than having to dismatle the whole fuggin vehicle.

Its a bit awkward, cos making flares on the OEM steel brake pipes is harder than the soft copper replacement stuff, but it saved me a load of grief.

Your not wrong!, If mines anything to go by VW's aren't really worth the extra money, Though mine has done 122k now so i guess the mileage won't help.

To make matter worse my wife 2004 Micra DCi needs a new clutch, I've had a quote of £186 +vat for the clutch and my tamed mechanic has quoted £80 cash to fit it, and he said that when he removed the headlight to replace the cambelt last month the inner wing had started to rot out, Great.

I'm very tempted now to get shot of both of them, get one decent car for the wife to use (i quite fancy a Mondeo TDci Zetec S or ST if i could afford it) and buying a shitter for me to run around in. We'll see.

Middle aged VW = nightmare if you get a bad one.

Fords tend to stay fixed. VWs / Audis tend to stay broken.

My E30 318i Beemers been taking an age to warm up recently , so todays mission was a new stat and antifeeze refresh ready for winter

WHAT A DIFFERENCE  , warms up in less than a mile , temp gauge now goes to the middle instead of just a third of the way up and the heater is like the fies of hell , need to check the levels when its cooled down and im still not sure theres enough antifreeze in it , but still well chuffed all the same.

Stat is a funny remote mounted effort suspended between three hoses , god knows how it works and it cost over £30 trade  .

The Saab's thermostat is jiggered, the temperature gauge is barely registering above the lowest point now. Annoying thing is I replaced it in the summer. Quinton Hazell thermostats are utter shit, I've had problems with them before.

The CHECK ENGINE writing is lit up all the time now, I wonder if the wanky thermostat is the reason.

^^^^^^^^ hope you get the same result as me when you change it , The one ive fitted is a copy but not Q/H thank god

+3.17.

122k should be sod all to a modern diesel though, it's a crock of shit when they fail around that mileage. Mine's done about 134k I think and I wouldn't be in a hurry to own another one.

In fact, fuck it I'm going to get rid of it shortly as I need a hatchback or estate anyhow.

I have quite a long list in my head of everyday cars I'd like to buy, up there with the Rover Streetwise and 45 TD is late '90s/early '00s VAG TDi stuff - I particularly like the shite option SEAT Toledo.

My friend's Bora TDi hasn't been wholly trouble free, requiring a new steering rack and much of the stuff trigger listed. But it is a 150k car.

I think VW have built this bulletproof reputation around their cars, so people are shocked when they have to shell out for wear and tear items.

Isn't there a chance that other bits of that rotten pipe are also, how you say, "fugged" and that replacing the whole section would be a good idea? :?

Hmmm, I suppose its no worse in a way to me patching up bits off inner sill rather than chopping the lot out and starting again.
