I believe these were carb fed to make them easier to fix out in the field. Didn't they also have a second set of lights to make them look like Trabants from a distance?

There used to be a fantastic article on BRIXMIS on a website about numberplates, alas it turns out I'd circumvented a paywall through Google Images(?) and they realised at some point and changed it so you had to pay membership to see the page.
