Anyone remember a Sky gameshow called 'Beat the crusher'? I stumbled an advert for it on an old video taping for The Simpsons. According to the synopsis it featured couples gambling their own car for a brand new one. I investigated online and found wikipedia states in one episode a couple lost the game and had their Ford Cortina crushed.

I can only assume the new car would have been a base model, or a South Korean product. It was hosted by Freddie Starr and Melinda Messenger, which I guess was a valid reason not to watch it. I can't seem to find any footage online unfortunately.

It did spark off some of the shows I watched as a kid though, and found these shite related ones on youtube.

Warning! Some of these clips feature Jeremy Beadle, but the car content makes up for it.

It was a MK3 I think.Apparently, according to the very little information there is on the internet, it was on display outside a Ford Dealership in the north.

Yeah i vaguely remember it. I thought that came of a programme that was about building cars, and if they lost some games it got crushed, not so you won a new car.

Mention of car crushers on Tele reminded me of an episode of 'Jim'll Fix it' where some young kid wanted Jim to fix it for him to 'crush' a car in a scrapyard. So, his wish was duly granted, and from what I can recall said kid was filmed in a 'deserted' scrapyard waiting on the crushing machine with the operative. Then, with dramatic effect the gates of the yard were opened and a MK1 Transit Minibus/camper (memory is hazy on that fact) emblazoned in 'Jim'll Fix it' logos was driven into the yard, up to the crusher.....It was then wanged up into the machine and the kid pressed the button. Cubed.Don't cry Fred.

I think that was 'panic mechanics'. Had Ed China and Andy Saunders as the occasional expert for either team. The starting bit before they actually got cars to modify was fixing a fault preventing a car from starting, and moving it before a tank ran over it! Was pretty good television.

I'm still trying to get around my head that the XR3i and its 'designer' body kit cost 15K in 1988. I also did a check on the DVLA, and it seems like the original car didn't live for very long.I saw Sky High Transit a few years after this was shown too - might well have been a NEC Motor show, in the good old days when they featured both cars and commercials.

I hope the kid suffered for that......

There was a feature on Fifth Gear where people disposed of their old crocks. They didn't get anything from it apart from the 'joy' of seeing their car crushed by an excavator and it being broadcast on national TV.

The XR3i was a Mk4 E-reg  The vehicle details for E320 GGW are: Date of Liability 01 02 1991 Date of First Registration 17 05 1988 Year of Manufacture 1988 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1597CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour RED Probably written off because the woman who had it was still pissed off with old Beadle and crashed in a fit of rage.

It was rubbish.

I didn't know that Jeremy Beadle was dead. I'm not sure if this is good or bad.

Given what it would be worth now, I'd imagine they probably are too!
