Adventures of Yoli the Rav4

After the informative thread asking for help to source a cheap 4x4 and narrowly missing out on a number of suitable prospects , I finally  pulled the trigger on a little rav4 in southport.

Small problem being that I am in sunny Hornsea for the next few months! Thanks to a friend having literally just moved to southport it was bought blind off ebay. He volunteered to pick it up given he was just 3 minutes away from the seller.  This led to me driving over finding the local Arnold Clark and selling the 107 of doom bought off here almost 2 years ago now.

Going to pick it up from my friends house the first thing that stood out was the two front tyres being completely bald, oh well! not like I had 150ish miles to drive back.

Finally arrived back to base, time for a partial fleet shot!

Picked up a set of rav 4 standard alloys with decent set of matched yokohoma tyres from goole on the way past, because it would be rude not to! next step, fitting the new (old) wheels. (the eagle eyed might just have made them out in the boot in picture two.)

The oil was also ridiculously low, but i topped it up before setting off from southport and fingers crossed it hasn't moved on the journey over, it drove fine and sounded healthy but pulled slightly to the left and felt skittish, probably due to the bald tyres i hope.

Next up order up a service kit and give it a bit of love, as it looks like it has been somewhat lacking, everything in the interior was sticky and there  was a certain herbal smell and green herb traces in the centre arm rest box.

It also needs three wipers, the ones on it look absolutely knackered, like they came from the factory. In more positive news it has a receipt for a clutch from mr.clutch at 400 quid which still has most of the 2 year warranty on it, how someone thinks spending 400 quid on a clutch makes sense but spending 10 quid on wipers doesnt or 70 quid on a pair of tyres doesn't is a little beyond me.

I'd get rid of the lock nuts tbh. They can be a pain.

I've got spare nuts for my RAV4 if you want them as replacements?

New tyres fitted and shitty locking wheel nuts binned off, previous owner had left the non locking ones in the glove compartment with the key for the locking ones thankfully. Thought one of the lockers was going to wind up stuck as it refused to play nice, you can see where the holes have started to go oval, it was properly wedged in there.

It's moronic tyre fitters using a rattle gun to torque up tyres. I remove lock nuts from shite I own these days.

100% with you there, locking wheel nuts are shit plus i doubt anyone is going to want to nick a set of alloys either the aftermarket ones that were on it or the standard rav4 ones that have gone on it. Even if they did, they'd be able to sell them for a hundred quid? doesn't sound worth the hassle to me.

Locking wheel nuts might make a bit of sense on a brand new mercedes where a replacement alloy is worth 800 quid because the only place you can get them from is the mercedes dealership as  none of them have been scrapped yet. But yeah, not really relevant to me and just another thing to go wrong.

Haha great minds think alike! thanks for the offer but thankfully the owner had left the original wheel nuts in the car. Locking wheel nuts are just an accident waiting to happen.

Absolutely no worries!

I had the delight of trying to find a garage to remove one locking nut which was mangled to hell, so after that I took them all off. Except for the spare wheel, that one can stay!

Got caught in a summer storm, I'd ordered up new wipers from eurocarparts last week, but got a cancellation saying they didn't have them in stock.

It's OK though because I was stuck in a poundstretcher car park. They sell wipers, these will be cracking quality at 2 for 99p
