A bit of cut and weld today.

20231124_095541.thumb.jpg.27655169344f3a16a348207e44de4d3e.jpg

Started by making up the mirror image of the passenger side mid-pipe.

20231124_111859.thumb.jpg.3a0d3ed272f59ef122ad421bfefac5fc.jpg

Rain stopped play, need to clean the welds up.

They fit pretty well though. Weatherman says the rain should stop now for the rest of the day (believe it when I see it). Now being held up by FedEx who have my mufflers on their truck with expedite labels on, and they still aren't here yet.

It’s interesting to see how you do the exhaust on this, I was thinking of doing my own system for the Mercury at some point as it’s just got a rough old muffler shop style cobbled together system on it at the moment with single tailpipe. Something free-er flowing with twin tailpipe’s would be much better!

Well, the exhausts are cobbled together here, also!

Discovered a loose plug lead.

That was making all the pops and bangs out the exhaust, no2. We'll see if the manifold darkens up.

I bought a couple of Flowmaster clones, mild steel because hey, cheap, and the inlet and outlet are in the right place.

Spent an age trying to get that all to line up and created a hanger with a rubber bungy- all with enough room to wobble a bit.

Stuffed the other side into the downpipe and wedged the other muffler on the floor, and gave it a test. Nice deep note, surprisingly quiet.

Because it was up in the air, I changed on the oil. Yuk. Lots of gasoline and condensation.

Made up the rear section of driver's side pipe. Shows you just how damn long the car is, that's axle to bumper.

Welding in the dark isn't much fun. Need to tidy it up a bit and get some clamps.

Sits nicely though. Still pondering what ends I should put on. I'm thinking turn down.

That's not a bad idea. I'll have to see how much those replicas are.

Had a look up underneath now the sun is out.

Elegant, no. Functional, yes.

I'll dress the welds out later, ordered some sleeve clamps, they'll be here Thursday.

Edit: Nope, delayed until next week

Had 30 minutes so got the end of the mid-section done.

That now reaches the muffler. Need to make the support brackets next.

Finished up the passenger side pipe.

Doesn't look too bad.

Sits up underneath quite tidy.

Sounds okay, too.

thats not a corsa hooning it down nailsea :D

this manufactured noise thing into the car on modern stuff?

nahhhhh

this - been going a long time and will continue (and if not we'll be round to ask why) :D

I put the back bumper on to see how it all fits.

Happy with that. However, it's now running on six cylinders despite having reasonable compression so I'll pull the plugs and clean them up.

Looks and sounds absolutely fantastic!

Did you put a X or joiner section into the exhaust anywhere so it’s connected side to side? Or is it two completely separate pipes?

Im not sure really what the point is in an X section on some exhaust systems.

Two completely separate pipes.

The H or X pipe balances out the sides a bit because this engine (like most V8's) doesn't fire each bank evenly.

So, it ends up a bit noisy (you hear the high RPM crackle in the video, and idle sounds a bit louder than it should) because of the off-beat so joining the pipes before the silencers quietens it down and helps improve scavenge.

It's better when it's running on all eight, instead of six cylinders.

Cleaned the plugs. Need to check the gaskets for leaks, that's more steam than I am happy seeing from the left bank.

Good to catch up on this car Phil.

Progress is constant with you.

Set the ignition and mixture.

Fine tuned it and decided to see how slowly it would idle.

That sounds so awesome! Bet the neighbours would love that if you had a 6am start!

It's not the noisiest vehicle on the street, by a long shot.

Camera microphone makes it appear louder than it actually is. Figure you can hear the carburetor hissing quite loudly and in reality that's not all that loud.

But, those are straight through exhausts with only baffles to quieten things down. It rumbles.

Now it's gone through a few heat cycles the downpipes are leaking again. I need to put some bigger bolts on them.

Pleasant day today so some troubleshooting and repair.

20231210_132721.thumb.jpg.6c40db1e2b5d9da80801cd689a2d8346.jpg

This freeze plug had decided it wasn't a plug any more, rather more a nozzle.

20231210_135110.thumb.jpg.bfd8399840486d57fb6cbf5c51e3652a.jpg

Bashed at it a bit with a cold chisel and it came out, followed by a lot of rust.

20231210_135420.thumb.jpg.741c9eb2f18f04e49969592c8632bc7a.jpg

Flushed that through a touch. Better.

20231210_135737.thumb.jpg.53d9bb5013072f9e3fb8af7feaee1841.jpg

13/16" spark plug socket and a hammer; new plug in place and sealed up.

20231210_161044.thumb.jpg.c14f382caa5ee011c34864534f3f0352.jpg

Checked it was charging, cleaned up some contacts. That'll do.

20231210_161058.thumb.jpg.0ad88e4214269d799a2493218441005c.jpg

Gives nice bright lights.

However, number 2 cylinder didn't appear to be doing a great deal of work, so I pulled the plug and tested the compression.

20231210_151637.thumb.jpg.1a9db8605b58ab528970602765b9c912.jpg

Not great but certainly enough to make it pop at idle so I tested the plug wire, that was good, but the plug was bad. No spark.

20231210_153708.thumb.jpg.bb99ec875fd2bbc11c1627b7d334f173.jpg

Bought a new plug, checked the gap - correct wide gap for hei ignition.

Improved things considerably, especially at idle.

20231210_143555.thumb.jpg.b76909bc3b7a5fcf62e8c2ca97772679.jpg

Also means it'll peel out easily. A good afternoon's work.

I have improved my odds by installing a PCV system, which isn't overly obtrusive. It significantly cuts down on the smoke and stink in the engine compartment, so that's a good thing.
