Hey Bollox,I would look out for a Fourtrak if you can find a non rusty one (check the sills very carefully) as they are superb tools. Generally the post 1993 ones with coils all round will be the only ones left now, these have a wider track and are much better to drive than the earlier narrower ones. My dad ran both a F reg (early) and a P reg (late) and the difference is like a Series III Landy compared to a 90/110/Defender .Good lump of torque from the 2.8 turbo dizzlers. Very popular with Welsh and border farmers - as they were effectively a cheaper, better take on the Land Rover Defender. So pop over from Crewe to North/Mid Wales/Shropshire/Herefordshire. Avoid totally shagged hill farmer specials though, usually easily identifiable by major dents in each panel. If you drive them gently (as my dad did) you should get close to 35mpg out of them. Not when towing though!Very reliable, but parts are expensive as they are all Daihatsu sourced. There is a good 4wd-only auction in Leominster, Herefordshire (Brightwells - they are on the web, might even have online catalogues these days) where all the dealer part-ex's go - on a weekday though, so a day off work will be required.

Looks like if you spun the wheels whilst turning right you'd get a face full of shit..... :)

Hey Bo1, This might come in your price range, Has the 2.5TD but does also has a few issues like non working headlights, broken mirrors, Some holes in the roof and a internal water leak which should keep the price down.

Cheers trigsbury! I have boshed it in my watch list, although I think the seller is a bit of a shady operator.

Hey XBol, i wouldn't be put off by the Hilux Surf apparent head death, my £250 effort was ace, never missed a beat, although after i ballsed it up with 33" tyres it killed the mpg.... It was an awesome truck, comfy, welll specced and nice to drive. Went well pre ballsing up too! I've still got 2 tubs of the genuine coolant which averts the head death too....

Can't you get the Surf with a 3-litre turdbo dizzle? Thought that was more head-strong than the 2.4.

You can, mine was the 2.4, with 200K on it and i've no idea if it had had the cambelt done! Went like a good un although emptied the sump of oil over about 100 miles...
