A kind of spot.

Does look pretty good that. Has it been split into seperate units or is it all still one building? And is it all still a garage?

Unfortunately, it looked either full of junk, or some kind of market set up. There is a funeral directors or something under the Hillman sign, a (maybe empty) shop under the commer sign but the other side looks open plan.I've only ever driven past it once or twice so when I got a job in Llandod last week I made a point of taking the camera, who knows how long it will stay that way? It's lost letters since the wikipedia picture. When would those names have disappeared? late 70's?

Wowser, that's supa kool. I went to Llandridnodododod Wells the other week, didn't see that place at all. Was quite dark by the time I arrived and still had a few "hits" to do before the light faded completely (and I was forced to retire to the 2nd worst hotel of evAr)

Ah, that's better. What a place! The names lasted until the late Seventies as you say, but the artwork is more Fifties I would have said.

Certainly looks late '50's to me.Wouldn't it be nice to buy the whole building, knock it back into one and turn it into some sort of motoring tat emporium.Well I think it would :D

Holy shit. Nice one Louise, that place looks mega! Not a million miles from GRANDMA_WAT either.

Being a Imp fan and owning a Commer and a Singer version , I WANT THE WHOLE THING , Would be great to have half as a home and half as a garage / workshop

Really nice - what's with the location of the 80s style petrol pumps? Would those have been there originally? Can't picture cars bumped up on the kerb filling up

If you look carefully there are two articulated gantries with hoses for fuel delivery on. Presumably you pulled up outside and the attendant swung the hose out over the street to fill your Allegro up with yummy 4-star.

Good gracious! I didn't even spot that - I'll try using my eyes next time. These pumps put me in mind of the set in the Esso garage up the road from where I grew up (primary tat spottage ground and where I spotted my first CX in action!) and the pumps had mini versions of those gantries that could swing either side of the pier. The delivery pipe had what I could only call an 'optic' on it and you could see the 4* coming through in its leady, yellowy glory. And at the time my old man would purchase 3* for the 2CV because it was dirt cheap and ran on it fine (possibly even 2* but can't recall)Evenually, ay mid 90s, they replaced all the pumps with later types possible near the time of the death of 4* tho I'm sure it was before that. Today's pumps have no character! (apart from LPG pumps - they're still quite cool)

I used to like these cylindrical Mobil pumps, they seemed really space age when I was a kid. I can only recall one garage locally that had them though:

That is pretty neat - don't recall ever seeing one of that type. Actually, the type that really gets my goat is the new 'pay at pump' ones. I stood for ages like a TWAT waiting for the thing to start all the time the wummin in the Kiosk is passively staring at me - no help or anything. It took some time before I realised that I had to confirm that I was doing it 'by the pump' or paying in the kiosk. - Why not ask at the end?

I've started exclusively using the garage with attendant service in my village to get away from the numpties at filling stations. The current difference in price means I get about 8 miles less out of my 20 quid than if I went to the supermarket but I do have a warm glow inside from helping a small local business :D

Just a shame they don't have old Tockheim pumps with globes on top for the complete experience!

I think we've seen these before, but worth another look whilst we're on the subject:

EXACTLY the same thing happened to me when i was filling a mates car up the other week, its really annoying. The pumps the Texaco in Odiham uses seem pretty old, they vibrate quite a lot when being used. And theyre not digital. That building looks super cool though, itd look better as an old parts place with stuff just piled up everywhere so you only have about 10 inches of walking space.

Totally unattended service at some now: Went to fill up at Asda in Norris McWhirter Green, Scouse the other day, only to find that the cash I had just drawn for the purpose would not be any good. Rubbish!

the building is split into shops, and one side is open plan and has a tabletop/junk sale in the summer months, you can't miss it in daylight it is on the main street through the town.it would be nice to get a collection of shite and drive up there park outside and get some photos - anyone interested?

I believe the Automobile Palace was one of the first if not the very first purpose built garage in the UK. It is now home to the National Cycle Museum, which is well worth a visit:

That garage does look ace. Would be great to just fill it up with period cars. Went to a station in Bromsgrove once and they had an attendant come out and fill up the car which i thought was quote cool. The next day, i was driving through Nottingham when the car cut out. I checked the fuel filter and there was no fuel (i guess you can see where this is going), and at the same time my mate took off the dizzy cap picked off the rotor arm and broke it just as i exclaimed that the fuel cap had been left open. Nowhere open in Nottingham stocked a GT6 rotor arm at that time of evening so the RAC kindly came out and trailored me from Nottingham to Worthing saving me a pretty penny in the process. Top work.
