Only one car, forever - could you do it?

Peugeot 305 GTX or...Peugeot 205 DTurbo or...Talbot Sunbeam Lotus Oh dear! This is difficult!

Not the easiest of questions. Theres always a reason to want more than one car, although I have to say Ive only ever owned one at a time so far, hopefully that will change in the next couple of months. If I had to have one car, and it had to be shite, I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to find something more suitable than a Granada/Scorpio 24v estate. In any dark colour with raven leather and an autobox - bliss.

Difficult... when I read about Nick Mason taking the kids to school or to the shops in his 250GTO in winter (long time ago though) because it was the only car that would start I had fantasies about a (replica) GTO, SWB or even a Pur Sang Bugatti 35B as my only car, provided I wouldn't have to drive to work everyday or even work for a living at all and could live in a fairly sunny country...In (more or less) real life I think I could live with just the one Corona RT40 hatchback or wagon or a Corolla KE16 wagon, they would tick many boxes - old, Japanese, practical, rare, not too big... but I'd prefer them with a modern engine.

That certainly would be very difficult because of my wide taste in cars but if I was somehow forced to have only one which I had to use as a daily and as my toy then it would have to be my Triumph 1300. I've owned this since 1994 and I still get a kick out of driving it.

It's not on quite top form now but if it was well sorted mechanically I would have no hesitation about it being the only one and it's the only car I've owned that I could never part with.

I think this might just do for me, would have everything I want. Perhaps a tax-exempt one with an LPG conversion - fully restored of course.

No chance for me yet either, not owned enough cars - and possibly nothing truely shite.. There's so many cars I want to experience. I am hoping that once I get my own place I can have a second car that I swap every 6 months or so - unless I manage to find something I absolutely adore.

I'm going to have to stick to what I know, but go for the best available, keep it that way, and if like this example it is LHD, I'll just spend more time in the Tuscan Villa.

Couldn't do it. There are so many cars out there that I've yet to try \ drive \ own.Sorry.

My old saab 900 T16S, could have owned that forever...needed work though. But I do like to try different cars - and running 2 would be a no-no....

I've pretty much defaulted to the Mk2 Fiesta, although looking to the future these aren't any good for family/load-lugging/towing so it's inevitable I'll end up with something a bit more practical. I do wonder whether something like a nearly-new Octavia diesel estate would be a decent idea, purchased with a view to never ever getting rid of it.

On a purely practical level something like the Mondeo 2litre hatch I already own would probably suffice, although finding bits for it in 2040 might be a hassle. On all other levels no, I couldn't.

My Passat has been good to me so far, Only trouble has been a flat battery which i can let it of for.

It's very nippy for a TDi, It has the later PD engine with 115 bhp, and still returns about 48mpg daily.

Only had it since April but I've covered nearly 10000 miles in it. I'm happy.

That Passat looks lovely. Weird how VW Golfs sometimes cost more than Passats on the same plate...

Can you get these for less than 1k?

Scene Tax is surprisingly alive and well even on 'modern' cars.... you're bang on the money, a same-spec same-engine same-year Golf ALWAYS costs more than a Passat. I think they're just more desirable amongst a certain crowd of people, the crowd that care what people think about what they're driving. At work there's at least 8 Mk4 GTIs (5 of them black), and one Passat Estate.

I like changing cars and driving different ones, but if I have to choose a car to drive forever, it would be the Mitsubishi Pajero V20, I´d prefer the 2.5 TD Wagon GLS.

Why? Because I absolutely love it how smooth and refined the 4D56-engine is, how comfortable the ride is in the Pajero V20 compared to other offroad-cars and I´d like to have the GLS because it has air-condition, velour-seats, adjustable dampers (Soft, Medium, Hard via a switch on the interieur), sprung front seats and all the extra-comfort to make long journeys nice.

Don't think I could, I just get bored of cars too quickly. Still, if I had to, M5 estate with a manual box should be all I ever need
