Provencal Spottings

Recommended Posts

I've just got back after a nice week in Provence, its still quite warm down there!

Really nice time to go as there are no tourists cluttering up the place. Stayied in my grandfathers house which is in a tiny village on the top of a hill, very rural and great for spotting tat.

Firstly hire car brand new Renualt megan, there were so many gadgets on this thing its was unbelivable. Auto every thing - great until it starts going wrong.

The topless R4 could be a factory "plein-aire" version.....or just some nutters with a paddy's bicycle.....

Nice pics - just reminded me that we saw a genuine Mk1 Renault Alpine (Gordini to us) on an autoroute in France. Generally, slim pickings for classic spotters though, so you've done well!

Think the LN is a 652 one - can't say I really know how you spot one but I think the plainer rear is the clue.Amazed your saw an actual CX on the road! Didn't see one in 3000 miles. Unlike Lada Nivas. Saw thousands of the bloomin' things!

Ooh-mama!

That Iveco Massif thing looks a laugh! Is it made from heavy gauge plastic - like a gaint Action Man vehicle?

Posted

Blimey its nice to see that theres a place with so much good quality shite still avaiailable.I havent seen some of those spots for a very long time, even when on holiday in the Med, like the Mehari and MK1 5's.R4 still my favourite though!

Thats a Renault Rodeo, i think that one might be a later one based on a 5 though.

Posted

Yeh, thats an R5 based Rodeo. I really really want either a Rodeo or a Cit Mehari. Don't know why as they're not exactly ideal for Northern England and are surprisingly expensive.Great photos, thanks for sharing. I went to the same area in summer, was very very hot there in June, beer helped keep me cool though :D

Fantastic pics, I cant wait to finally go abroad and get some shite spotted.

100% shite Iveco massif or massif iveco

Based on a 50 year old Land Rover design and made in spain with an italian diesel engine.
Is it the same as a Santana then? Looks spectacularly shitey.
Posted

Does look like the landy it's derived from, but not enough. Are there copyright issues or sommat?

Posted

winter time is definatly the best time for shite spotting in the south of france, I have been many times in the summer and not seen half the stuff i saw on this trip. Other spots of worthy mention but no photos, traction avant, 2 DSs, 203 saloon, renault Estafette and a handfull of Pug 504 pick ups. The trip has left me yerning for something french small 60's/70's  That Iveco was really odd, seemed plastic and metal, looked like a lwb Defender but much taller/wider/longer I did like the brown steelies!

Santana built 'Series' Land Rovers under license. I think these modern Santana/Iveco Massif efforts are inspired by LRs rather than straight copies.I like them! They seem like more honest workhorses than the latest Defenders.

Well to be fair that's not hard. Who's brilliant idea was it to put an auto in a supposed proper off roader?

Posted

An automatic in an off roader isn't such a daft idea, you lose a lot of momentum rowing through a manual gearbox.

Posted

I heard the LR autos burn out if they get too bogged down, not exactly good if you find yourself up to the axles in mud, like my mate did.
