Hello everyoneI'm Sam (guy) and I'm 27.I came across this forum a couple of days ago (I can't remember what I typed in to get here!) and have been reading about all the shit/great cars that you love!!I am a massive fan of older cars that most people hate. I often think about buying some of the most catastrophic cars I can think of because it would be fun to drive them and see peoples reactions. I mean, I have a picture of a Talbot Tagora as my msn picture and here I find that you love them too!I'll give ya my car history (I have not bought any proper monsters yet!)Vauxhall Carlton 1.8L D reg new shape - parents car. I had the biggest car at school when I was 18!Ford Capri 1.6, Ford Capri 2.8i - great cars, love them to bits, they both fell apart.Alfa Romeo 164 V6 24V manual - incredible engine and immediate throttle response made this car such fun and a great cruiser. Had this for the last few months of uni.Mercedes 190 2 litre auto - great solid brick of a car. Mercedes SEC 5.0 V8 auto - got this car for 1300 off ebay. Had a custom paint job and was visually stunning and mechanically knackered. Was scrapped after 6 months.Peugeot 106 1.4D - I was trying to find the cheapest car I could with a long MOT and I picked up this derv beast for 220 quid with 11 months MOT. What can I say?? It is unbelievably slow (50bhp) but returns upto 72mpg on a long run driving like a Granny. It has a great gearchange and I kinda love it now!For some reason I have developed an obsession with old-skool diesels. What I mean is diesels pre mid 90s really when they were so slow, noisy and dirty. I would love to buy cars such as Escort 1.6D, Sierra 2.3D or Peugeot 305D etc...(I will start a separate thread on old diesels I think).Anyway hi :)

Welcome Sam. You want an old skool diesel, get a DI transit!

Thanks! I was going to say, the worst/loudest/funniest diesel I think I have ever heard was a 'smiley' Transit from the mid-90s which was an Ice Cream van. I actually could not believe that an engine could be that harsh. awesome:)

Hi there Mr HighwaysNothing wrong with a penchant for diesels from the days when they sounded like a set of rusty nails in a washing machine. Especially when they are povo-spec.Anyway, welcome to our oasis of shite, I'm sure you'll feel right at home! The so-called 'Management'

Nah, sod that. 2.4 York FTW. Even slower and dirtier than a DI, although perhaps not quite as noisy.

I drive a 39 year old 2.3 Diesel with 62 BHP, and that's at the flywheel...................It weighs 2 tons, and has drums all round. Great fun in the commute. Buy a Land Rover that's tax free, you'll never look back mate. Achtung Wilkommen etc..........

Or a tax exempt transit.....

Havnt they nearly all dissolved by now or really expensive for a good one , or have you got them all , im new so forgive me

I actually drove a Series III Landy for the first time at the weekend - my mate's R reg LWB, fitted with a Perkins 4.236. It was interesting - turning circle was diabolical but steering not as heavy as I was expecting, not fast but felt like it'd pull a house down. Main problem I had was the throttle spring was too weak so it was impossible to keep a steady throttle over bumps, which led to some comical kangarooing. The 4.236 is a proper old school diesel though - massive stroke, no power but humungous torque, flat out at 2,800rpm, noisy as hell, mechanical injection pump with a cable-operated shutoff valve - brilliant. It even smells like a diesel should. I fancy buying an old Silver Shadow and dropping one in - luxury with economy, what more could you want?

There's the joy of the original engine, the 2286 Rover unit, no power, no torque...................It's great fun in a 109, wonderful for filling the following cars with smoke so they all back off a touch..............

 You might be new but you seem to know too much! We have 3 Mk1s, two tax exempt and another in bits. The SWB was bought as a pop top camper and we reverted it to a van.

welcome from another newb. you're right, it's a great forum.that 106 thing is a bit modern for my liking (by about 20 years), why not trade it in for a 305D or something like that? EMBRACE THE SHITE.

Welcome along! You certainly seem well qualified with your car history :D The Northern Autoshite contingent continues to increase!!!

You're right, a 305 D would be absolutely fantastishite. I am just imagining it now. The thing is, it would require more money to keep it in shape (I do 50 miles a day). I am not handy with a spanner.Didn't 305s have insanely comfortable seats trimmed in funny material?

OK here is my workhorse. I particularly like the black steelies and the green seatbelts and piping around the seats. It's a Key West special edition.

Now thats shite..!

Diesels rock.... slow as feck but they go forever....

My dad had a Mk1 Sierra 2.3D on a B-reg (with a peugeot engine). Did 300,000 miles and was still running when the rag-n-bone man took it away. Had plenty of grey spots on it where a stone had chipped the paint so my dad not caring much had just hand painted it with a bit of grey rust eater. Quality bit of tat that was... just rotted and shook itself to death.

Was replaced by an E-reg Citroen BX 1.9D Est. Which also bruised a whopping 200k. With the little lever to raise and drop the suspension... It got scrapped because the suspension (spheres) had catastrophic failure.

Yes, they were the most comfortable seats in the world, and that's official. Came in a fetching tweed trim, or how about these velour jobbies for your top of the range SRD diesel?

Squishy! My dad's 305 van had sickly torn vinyl seats, they weren't comfy at all. Should have sacked them off for a pair of those armchairs.

Hello. Just joined today, been meaning to for an age.Im sure i joined a few years back when i lived abroad but i cant remember if I just looked in or not..... :? Im currently looking for another Scimitar to replace ( eventually) my newish daily. I can no longer justify the expense of a new car and, besides, they aint no fun. I was quoted £266 the other day for my dailys 2nd annual service (2007 model) I nearly choked on the phone..Ive only got a 1.2 Clio!!!! I asked the receptionist if she wanted my kidney too, she wasnt amused which suited me because i wasnt doing a jig either.Had a Scimitar a few years back, sold it because i was a twat, then bought a 2.8 Capri which was a bag of shit ( am I allowed to be a bit negative here or will I get shot?) and lost a pile of money on it. Im now at the stage where my good Lady Sprocket has "allowed" me to seek and purchase another piece of historic British Autoshite.Problem is as soon as I get near to one ( fleabay) some git outbids me.I shall plug away till I get one. :D Can I assume that this hallowed forum frowns on the words "ooofff" and "want!" and can I be reassured that we are not all expected to "hit it with a stick" or satin any colour it?I notice that there are some refugees from "elsewhere" here, hopefully Im in good company :D As soon as I find my new baby I shall post some pics up for you to laugh at or admire, whatever rthe case may be ( I have a modest budget and a Mrs who wants two weeks away next year...)RegardsLord Sprocket

Welcome in Lord Sproket, who did you pay to get approved so quick?? Anyway you won't catch me hitting any of mine with anything but a big branch when they won't start. Satin black is for chassis. I do however want loads of stuff but I don't go around shouting it like a three year old....
