Having watched a certain YT video about a Renault 21 with smoked tail lights, it got me thinking. ?

What is the first car to have smoked tail lights as standard? My bet is on the 1978 Opel Senator / Monza.

My parents had a 1979 Vauxhall Royale 2800, from memory I think the tail lights were a red tint. This was the mid 1980s and I remember once seeing a Senator A and how extremely cool it looked with it's blackened tail lights and chrome strips. The Royale was rather conservative in comparison,

Royale saloon seems to have the red tinted light clusters while the coupe had smoked.

The answer to most " What was the first car to..." is invariably Cadillac , or at least some Septic barge from the 60's or 70's.

I was always a fan of the smoked lights on late model Sierras, they really suited it.

The early Royales did have a slightly red tint tint to their tail lights but the Senator/Monza were a shade darker, much like the XJ40.

These, from the dawn of motoring, can get pretty smokey, or am I missing the point?
