Lankytim Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 Hi all, I've got a 1996 Volvo 850 which has become a bit of a driveway ornament and I wouldn't mind getting it out on the road for a couple of days, just to actually get some enjoyment out of it. I've tried adding it as a temp car with my current insurers but they say it's too old. A quick look of temporary insurance sites are giving me quotes of £40 a day odd. Is there a cheaper way of just getting a MOT'd and roadworthy motor on the road for a day or two? I just can't justify spending £80 for a couple of days.
SiC Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 Have you tried classic insurance? You might be able to get a years policy for not much more. catsinthewelder 1
spike60 Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 I insured a 530d BMW for 14 days for £71 with Sky in Feb this year, they were the best of a not great bunch. If you can get classic as been said it's worth looking at, I paid £82 on a Mercedes 500 SEC in Dec. Fully comp for a year!
Lankytim Posted April 1, 2019 Author Posted April 1, 2019 Have you tried classic insurance? You might be able to get a years policy for not much more. Footman James quoted me £267 for a year, I'm not sure how it works out if I cancel after a few days or whatever.

Dave_Q Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 Hmm, I used day cover to bring my new van home and it was about £24, have you tried a few different places? If not just do a normal comparison and select the one with the lowest cancellation fee in the 14 day cooling off period.
The Moog Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 Admiral or elephant insurance if you can stick it on a card £25 for two weeks as long as cancel in cooling off period.
Lankytim Posted April 1, 2019 Author Posted April 1, 2019 Admiral or elephant insurance if you can stick it on a card £25 for two weeks as long as cancel in cooling off period. Woo, sounds interesting.
J-T Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 Admiral or elephant insurance if you can stick it on a card £25 for two weeks as long as cancel in cooling off period. Certainly does. I take it you'd need to pay for the full year outright and cancel? Footman James quoted me £267 for a year, I'm not sure how it works out if I cancel after a few days or whatever. For classic insurance, FJ have always been £250+ no matter what I quote on. I'd then ring Peter Best and get a quote around £100 lower. I think they just take the piss a bit because they know only them and lancaster will quote online and most people can't be arsed ringing up. Lancaster seem to have gone the same way. I remember about 4 years back I had a Prelude insured with Lancaster (online) for £90. I bet it would be about £250 now.
The Moog Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 Yes do not do this on finance. So either on credit or debit card. So take out full year and then cancel within the cooling off period. £25. Although Elephant are on to me now so need to give them a break.

Dave_Q Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 Feel I should emphasize the point that you MUST pay in one hit, most insurance companies add on extra charges and possibly farm out the finance to another company, so if you did take it out in monthly payments they would probably manage to figure that you owe them when you called to cancel on day 13. I've only ever done this once, and it happened to be on a shitter than had FTPd about 36 hours after renewing the insurance so I rang up to cancel. They were all OK with that so I reckon that is a decent cover story rather than going down the freeman of the land / I KNO MY RITES route (although they are legally obliged to refund you regardless) The Moog 1
The Moog Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I normally say I just dont need the insurance any more. If they probe then the car has broken down and not sure how long it will be off the road for.
dome Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I use Cuvva and find it very good-you do it via an app so can be on the road instantly once you've done the initial setup. Ifind if you only need to insure something for an hour or two (ie to bring some shite home) it's usually less than £15 https://www.cuvva.com/ HOWEVER it can't be used for anything over 20 years old so of limited use to shiters and I'm not sure what a day rate would be like. binhoker668 1
