Sending a gearbox to Belfast.

Has anyone sent an engine or a gearbox overseas? In this instance it’s Belfast so not too far.

Any cheap recommendations? Do I need to pallet it up?

Thanks in advance.

Sending a gearbox to Belfast sounds like a euphemism for having a post Sunday dinner poo.

Last time I shipped one I think it was under 20 GBP to courier 23kg gearbox to NI, drained oil out, bolted it to a small pallet, made a plywood box cover and dropped it off courier near Chessington World of Misadventure.  Have a look at the courier sites Parcel2GO and MonkeyParcels.

Quick googling shows prices of around £75 including VAT. Hopefully i'll get something cheaper

I think I got one down to £55 to Ireland last year, full size pallet and a few cheap ratchet straps, old seat belts come in handy as you can screw them into the pallet, covered it in cardboard then cling filmed the lot. Some couriers are funny about engines and boxes due to leaks so I drain them and then list it as an AC motor

AdamMcC of this parish recently had an engine and gearbox brought over from The Mainland to The Province... will ask him who he found to courier it.

EDIT: Although since they made an absolute cockbimble of the delivery - not telling him it was on its way, and then dumping it upside down at the side of the road before scarpering - on second thoughts, perhaps I should get the name only so you know who NOT to use...

its roughly €80 for a pallet 'shrink wrapped' to be sent over from UK to Eire; last time I checked - there was height /weight parameters etc; I used to have a no' for a fella that was a courier that used to do a good reliable service for this; I can possibly get his no' via FB, if hes still doing it...

Thanks for all the advice, much to go on. Typically the guy who wanted this gearbox has vanished into the ether even after a lengthy phone call where he offered to pay a deposit. Nevermind.

This thread title sounds like a song by The Smiths.

Mmm, and it would certainly tie in thematically with Morrissey's solo efforts, 'Vauxhall and I' and 'Viva Hate' - which, by staggering coincidence, also might echo the attempts to rectify the repeated transmission problems of my HC while in Northern Ireland.

Now that's spooky.
