Random ftp with our 02 reg 9-3 floppytop, drove it to south-west France and back and it only did it once, it did it again today in supermarket car park.

The problem is that sometimes you cannot turn ignition on and shift is locked in park. I am presuming there is a solenoid or relay overheating somewhere but where do I start to look? It usually starts without having to have foot on brake when its in park.

Waggle the auto shifter next time, I think it may believe it's in gear.

Tried that, and the ignition barrel and the footbrake. Tried getting out, locking it an opening again but it wasn't that easily fooled.

My technique would be to get mardy and swear a lot.

To clarify: cannot turn ignition to on position or cannot operate starter? Shifter interlock only operates to prevent starting not to prevent ignition on?

A good point, key turns but does not engage starter. Have you any idea how the shifter lock works? Could it be as simple as a spring loaded pin not engaging?

Probably a microswitch or several somewhere on the change mech if it's like the last one I touched.

With the key out of the ignition you should be able to hear the interlock clicking when you press the brake pedal on and off as well as feel it slightly vibrating on the gear lever.

I'd be looking at the ignition switch too. There's a few cars that have issues with the ignition switch going south.

If I'm getting this right, you are getting lights on the dash but bugger all starter action when going for start ? if so I'm diagnosing dodgy/worn ignition switch

Try a smidge of wd40 on the key and into the lock, not half a fekkin tin, just a smidge to lube it up a bit.

 

Had it on an x-type jag once and it was (IIRC) some sort of micro switch in the lock. It was fine after that.

 

Of course a Turnip might be totally different and this shitters tip may be of no use whatsoever

Yep, dash lights up.

I can feel the brake pedal interacting with gear shift.

Can the ignition switch be changed without the rest of the central locking gubbins? Remote is in the key on this car.

I think this is GM era so cowling off and it's pretty straightforward to change the switch, it's on the end of the barrel, I had exact same issue with a calibra that foxed both AA and RAC, replacement part was £8 new

Could it be an immobiliser issue?

I have had this same symptom on various vehicles when the key is not read by security gubbins.

You would get a flashing immobilizer light on the dash when cranking if that was the prob

That sounds like a good place to start. I doubt the whole ignition barrel is foobarred, the car has only done 100k.
