Insurance costs - Elderly relative

Not normally one to swear, but Jesus Fuckin Christ........

The renewal is coming up for my Dad and his VW Golf Estate diesesal.

He's 83, no crashes, but did get done by a speed camera for 3 pts during the year. (Still makes me chuckle..., Was one of those that looks like a 40 but was a 30)

Not had the renewal come through yet, but did a couple of online quotes to get an idea.

Place bets now........

£2000 for the year.

It's a fucking Golf, not a Bugatti Chiron....

Aware it's the age thing, but even so...

In the past couple of years it's risen from about £400 to this on the same car..

My son's 20 with a provisional license and is much cheaper.

We have similar problems with rental insurance, they cover 21-75 and we live in a town with an average age of about 70.

I've convinced them to cover the odd 78 year old but once they get to 80 I can't get anywhere.

My mum has just stopped driving at 83 as she worked out it was the half the cost to just use taxis everywhere, her insurance wasn’t quite as high (micra) but had still gone up to well over a grand. But to be fair in my Mum’s case we are glad she made the decision before we needed to have the conversation as it has become a worry the last year or so.

The way insurance is going there will be only a teeny window of opportunity to have non-mental insurance quote. Sadly that age will be between 34 and 34 1/2 years of age and if you blink then you are screwed, oh, also the planets will need to be in perfect alignment at exactly the moment you phone for a quote.

Named driver instead?

Gadgetracey could try getting themselves added to their Dad's insurance as a named driver as well. That can help in the same way as kids get their parents added to theirs.

Was already added. Took myself off out of curiosity. Made no difference.

Ahh well, was worth a thought.

My mum is 91 and had a parking scrape a few years ago. Her last insurer (Direct Line) put price up to about £900 last year so we got it for about £500 from Esure found on one of the comparison sites.

Before you ask we have been out with her and the driving is still fine.

Having witnessed the driving of various old people. Most of whom have never had an accident but have seen plenty in their rear view mirror. or would have if they ever used it.

Seriously Of the people i know over 80 that drive. 50% have only given up driving when they caused an accident. The other 50% have parking dents. I reckon that per. mile for most it would be cheaper to use a taxi.

That doesn't help you but might explain why insurance companies want to charge them more.

unfortunately that is the reality , the ever rising costs of the claims by the elderly drivers and the fact for many a moderate RTC may end up as a pre-terminal event ... ( much as 'having a fall' that results in hospitalisation is often a per -terminal event )

Bloke across the road was 91 and driving in the snow with 3 old ladies her was taking home from church. They were probably younger than him.

crashed on the ice. into a learner.

3 ambulances. 3 written off cars.

They refused to re-insure him, without a medical examination.

Doctor said: Well you have double vision and Alzheimers and a heart condition so lets say no.

He says: I'm perfectly fine.

Insurance said: No Fred. No way.

Thank God everyone was fine.

Keeps ringing me up to get a lift into town. I put the taxi number in big letters next to his phone.
