Do tell...

No love for them at all here. I came very close to dying in one in 1978 and have had an aversion to them ever since. :-D

Never had much to do with these but they were the car of the people back in the day.   In our street of 30 houses as a kid in the 70s, 5 had no car and 9 had ADO16s.   I know this because I wrote a survey for a school project!    They seemed car of choice for teachers too, closely rivalled by the Anglia.

Mrs Rocker had a red Kestrel in a previous life and often suggest buying "a nice little 1100".   Don't fancy the nice little welding bills, myself, but if the right car came along......

Bills are minimal if you do it yourself. ;)

They are a lovely car but so prone to rust.I believe that when Pressed Steel were presented with the body design they pointed out that it was full of rust traps, but that Mr Issigonis, the acknowledged genius, refused to make any changes.

It seems he was more interested in his cars having provision for having a fag than lasting well, for all their other merits.

When I was 17 (21yrs ago) had a phone convo With a derek bayliss of the 1100 club. Very nice chap. For some reason the only thing I can remember from his brief verbal buyers guide is “trumpet panels” and I still to this day have no idea what they are. Neither have i owned an 1100/1300 variant (must make amends)

I’ve never even sat in one, let alone owned one. But I have lusted after an 1100/1300 for years. I would have one over a Mini*.

*If I lived in Death Valley or the Atacama, and even then only if I had a dry garage with a dehumidifier.

MuthaN had an early Austin 1100 in about 1977 , it replaced a Simca 1000 and was in turn replaced by a Triumph 1300. None of them cost more than £15 and none stood a chance of passing the next MOT.

I well remember lying in the boot of the 1100, whacking the fuel pump and watching big lumps of rust drop into the road behind the car.

Still luxury to us compared to Fatha's S1 Land Rover.

I did own one, was an Austin 1100 that cost me 20 quid. Mind you it had a lovely mint Wolseley boot lid and its twin carb engine. The rest of it was pretty rough though. I gave it to a mate when I bought his '63 Galaxie for 200 quid. He gave it to an acquaintance who got into an altercation on a dual carriageway with a bus that pulled out on him and when the driver of said bus gave him the vee sign when he blew he horn. He saw red.and spent the rest of that stretch of road ramming the side of the bus which caused quite a bit of damage. Triumphant he drove off in the 1100 which of course went off to the crusher. Also recall a girlfriend's sister passing her test and buying an 1100. Sadly she was a crap driver and her method of progress was to pull away in first as you do but then change up into fourth which was quite frightening. Not sure how long that 1100 lasted in her incompetent hands.

I have fondish memories of these, my grandfather bought one in 1965 as a retirement car, as the garage at their new bungalow was too small for his old Morris. It was kept on the road for many years by my father and uncle with much welding and replacement subframe. Grandpa was stopped from driving in the mid 1970s and the car passed to my aunt, who looked after my grandparents, she hadn't driven since the war but made a reasonable go of it. Her driving was a bit like Edie, in Last of the Summer Wine, and she did have a few incidents such as not believing in pelican crossings nor fully understanding roundabouts. When the Mark 1 Morris got too bad my brother found a reasonable Mk 2 to replace it, unfortunately it was an automatic which she didn't get on with, so the engine, box, and pedals were put in from the Mk1. This lasted another few years although she always complained that the key was in the wrong place (it had a steering lock). When that one finally got too bad I found her another, I went to look at one which turned out to be a very nice 1300GT, which was much too good and fast, but the lad knew of someone with another 1100 for sale. It was fairly sound, but first gear was gone, so my brother swapped the engine and box again for her. This just about saw out her driving, I think she did have a short period driving an Allegro borrowed from one of my uncle's, but didn't get on with it and everyone gave a sigh of relief when she hung up her driving gloves.

One of my uncles had a Mk1 estate for years, it replaced an A40 Farina and I was once given a Mk2 two door which was only fit for spares

Found a pic of the Mrs Rocker Kestrel she had back in the early 70s.   Think they had probably outgrown it by this stage....
