We like nothing more than a car that requires zero maintenance bar new oil every half decade or thereabouts. And old Carinas/ Corollas do the job perfectly.

To be fair to my old beater, in the 10 months/ 12k miles I've had it it has wanted nothing and given me zero trouble. Passed the test in January with no advisories on its first attempt. I've gotten my 250 quids worth from it to say the very least. This is her looking slightly more relaxed than usual

I'd love to but if I brought home another car I would be confined to sleeping/ living in it

Which would make it a better choice than a Trabant ;)

Good Day,

I used to have a car listed, for some reason, in a book called Exotic Cars: a 1962 Austin/American Motors Corporation "Metropolitan". The unusual mini-Nash sold from 1954 to 1962. There were only 412 made for it's last year. Have any of these Metros survived in the U.K.?

Posted

Allegedly, the Metro shared an engine with some form of Austin sports car, possibly an MGA. An A-40 powerplant.

Welcome 62 Austin. A Metro in the States, guessing your in New England.

EDIT:.....OOPS, just read first your post........I R Idiot.

Posted

Never had gas money to get to New England. I did use to live in New Jersey (kind of like saying "No I have not spent a year living at Windsor Castle, but I once wintered in a tarpaper shack in Alabama"). To make it more confusing....I live north of Wyoming and south of Montana. Where do i live? Wait, I can't talk to you because I don't have 5 posts yet approved by moderation....or moderator.

Maybe if I switch fonts no one will notice I'm on here. Anyway, thanks for the welcome.

Hi all, I joined a few days ago after being a lurker for some time.

I found the forum through a friend after he asked if i had been on before.

I'm glad i did as there are some great threads here and some truly awful amazing cars to gawp at :-)

I am a panel beater by trade and am currently doing a full bare metal restoration on my 1984 mini 25.

I currently drive a renner scenic and have always owned cars that i just buy cheap no matter what they are and throw them away when they don't want to go anymore.

Cheers

Ben

Hello all, I have joined today after a recommendation. I have recently purchased a 2004 Proton Impian, the 1.6l Mitsubishi engined variety, with a few little niggles and was told I should fit right in. Already sorted one or two issues, largely with a can of switch cleaner, it is the broken glove box handle next.

While it is not a classic and I am pleased to report it has no rust (that I have spotted yet), I did notice it appears on your extinction list. I am therefore feeling both honored and duty bound to ensure the survival of the species. Just got some rust issues on a Corsa B Sting to sort first. Will try to get a pic of the Impian in the garage soon.

Now, I wonder what treasures (or sweet wrappers) lay in wait...

Sounds as though your the type who'll fit right in. Welcome aboard, coffees over. There and don't piss in the plant pots.

While it is not a classic....

Heathen! The Autoshite Proton Massive will come down on you like a ton of bricks with that attitude...

Purely from an age / technical point of view ;-)

While we are all getting to know each other, perhaps I should introduce the Corsa and it's rust. Currently deciding on the way forward with this (a welder clearly being involved). While being in many ways the least practical option, I am seriously considering trying to use a stick welder. It is conversation I would love to have with someone who could offer advice on taking that route.

It is rusty? Of Corsa Tis!

Sorry. Start a new topic full of x-rated corrosion pictures and no doubt the serial Voxol botherers of this parish will leap to your assistance.

Hello

Long time (well, couple of weeks) reader, first time poster. Decided to sign up after developing a bit of an addiction to the infectious wit displayed. Nice to know there are still real car fans out there, rather than just people who like making the driveway look prettier than next-door!

Current bus of choice is a Stagea M35. Previously owned a Legacy, 99 Prelude, CR-X Del Sol (and once had the misfortune of a new mini. Less said about that, the better...).

Hi All,

Until the other day, I didn't know this place existed. Now I do and I am pleased.

You are my people and I am one of you. While cars remain my strongest passion, they are not the main reason I am here. In life, I love meeting people who are enthusiastic about their interests. If you dig holes for a living and have good stories to tell about it, then I want to listen to you. If you slice tomatoes in a factory for a living but love amateur blacksmithing after work, I will be fascinated. Enthusiasm is what makes life good and the most enthusiastic, giving, generous and friendly people I have met are 'car people'.

From my very first car (and before) I have been fascinated and obsessed by buying, owning, maintaining and driving as many interesting vehicles as possible.

I have plenty of good stories and would like to share them which you and read yours. I will happily share what little advice and opinion I can and hope to get lots from this forum in return.

As well as maintaining 4 cars, I also maintain a very understanding girlfriend. I live in Bath, I am male, I am 26, I am a qualified teacher but the 'lifestyle' of a teacher is not for me.

Happy to be here,

Foeux.

Hi all - another newbie here, like the Forum and the banter.

I am currently looking for some 1970's Japanese nostalgic 'shite' and here's the anal bit - preferably a 1970 Toyota Corolla or Truneo Coupe with a TE27 1600cc twincam or a Datsun (Nissan in new money!) Bluebird SSS 1600cc/1800cc Coupe.

In fact I have been looking for a couple of years now as they are so hard to find for affordable money, probably got more chance of winning the lottery but hey you never know whats around the corner.

Posted

Well I got around to this bit.

The history....

started off in one of these:

7368054202_bb44eed3da_b.jpg

with considerable added rust, and crash damage repair...  (Ford Fiesta Bravo 1.1)

moved on to first of many froggie...

8349557594_8df2869aba.jpg

which loved to eat head gaskets..... but it was cool, after many many miles it gave way to a slow but shockingly reliable.....

14685335927_b5df8f7867_b.jpg

106 XND Graduate no less......  finally flogged it on and went all Italian for a few years....

fiat-punto-cabrio-176c-%5B2357%5D.jpg

Which was fun whilst it lasted, wobbled like hell, went like stink from the DOHC 1.2.  Then I got the slow ploddy derv urge again....

and I bought this from out of a barn and got it on the road..... (yeah this photo is actally of my car....)

It had belong to a bloke who did rallying in 504s, and co drove for Basil Wadman.  Somehow it ended up being converted from petrol auto, to diesel manual.  It was a daily drive for years, pissed out oil so eventually took it off the road and started restoring it, so needed another daily drive, so enter my ..... (yeah photo is of mine again)...

5733051071_eddbede247_b.jpg1978 Peugeot 104 GL by meyrickpark, on Flickr

Bought it off ebay without seeing it for about 300 notes, but it was local.  Patched it up, and slapped thich underseal on the seals and it plodded through several MOTs.  Finally the driveshafts were knackard and I couldn't do anything with it immediately so it had to go, wish I kept it, it turned up on ebay a couple of years later vandalised.

Bought a run around in the form of another 205, a 1.6 single point injection with a slugomatic gearbox on a M plate.  It was actually a joy to drive and fairly quick, a 3 door in Miami blue.  Sold it on for more than I got it for in the end.

Not sure what came next, must of been....

talbot-samba.jpg

Yeah my first TALBOT, a Samba LS.  It was a daily drive for a couple of years, but the unleaded petrol killed it in the end, and it disapeared off to Birmingham area not to be heard of since.

Thought I'd buy something of Shite of the future and it was truley honourable of the title, a Peugeot 1007 Sport.  A rare 1.6 petrol fully manual version no flappy paddles.  Came with all the toys JBL sound, sat nav, blah blah... and 2 million little bstd Gremlins.  Thank god it was under warranty.... it had to go.

Went sensible for 6 years in a diesel Skoda Fabia Greenline.  Just got too silly on serving costs, so back to 'Shite of the Future' with a series 2 Kia Soul Mixx.   Only seen one other on the road, so it does make me smile when I've driven for hours and not seen another.  For all its shiteness its got a kick ass sound system, nav, and the toys.

I am ichy for a Citroen Acadiane, or perhaps a Partner Dangel (FR), or a old 205 or something ain't quite sure after blowing the cash on the kia.

But I forgot.... I did own a TALBOT Matra Rancho!  Owned but never driven, it was a bit rotten on the front chasis and the engine was in bits, plans never came to maturity and it had to go:-(  but I can say I owned one with my name on the v5c.  I sold a couple of bits left over a while back and the guy came and picked them up with his family in the car.... only in a spotless Rancho identical to the one I sold, X reg in Silver.  Couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Hi all, one of the members on the 406oc site mentioned here, and it rung a bell after Vulgalour mentioned it a long time back at a meet as well, thought I'd sign up and take a lot, see a few familiar names on here!
Currently running around in a 406 coupe, but also have probably the worst condition Triumph GT6 in the country that's not been made into baked bean cans, a 405 Mi16x4 that's dying slowly under a sheet, and a weekend toy built out of the rejected parts from the local scrapyards.

Is it really true?  I saw Foeux's message above listing him as an "Austin Metro" in forum rank...and I once owned an Austin/AMC/Nash Metro. Something to look forward to. Dropped $100 on that one in 1976. Only British-built car I ever had. I had it for 3 days before I found there was a back seat. Sort of.
