W124 front springs..now Dave's W124 project thread...

The offset on these is a bit wrong, they're way too sticky outy, I suspect they came from an S Class or something.

 

They're stamped as AMG, but I'm not sure they're genuine ones, as genuine ones are about £1000.00 a set.

 

I've got a set of 15 hole wheels to fit on it, with the correct profile tyres :).  I want to add gingercators too, as it all looks a bit too scene to me at the moment.

 

For what is worth I haven't seen any 'replica' AMGs with the AMG stamp. Basically, any that are stamped are genuine although feel free to correct me. I've noticed the odd E430 (with the correct 18" AMG Monos on them) for sale at a price well below the value of the wheels alone.

 

Do like the gingercators idea as well. Go for it!

Finally got around to tackling the front spring last night.

 

Myself and another Dave decided that while I wait on parts for the fueling issues I'm chasing (I think the high pressure pump has gone, as I've no pressure what so ever at the fuel distributor) that we'd get it done.

 

It wasn't exactly easy going with the tool, and you really do need to work the spring very tight with the tool, but the tool worked really nicely and allowed easier extraction and re-installation of the spring than either of us expected, and niether of us died.

 

The car now doesn't have one spring shorter than the rest. :), does sit a bit high at the front though, so I might need to purchase a pair of rear springs as well and do them next.

 

First though, I make it run.  New fuel pump should arrive in the coming days to let me sort this out.

I should possibly set the scene a bit..

 

I'm slowly turning into the person I used to hate when I was a youth.  I suspect it's a sign of the times and getting older.

 

Whilst I was working on my W124 300E last night, I started looking over the car and did a quick VIN decode, just to see what equipment my car would have been fitted with as standard.  I've never really been a matching numbers conkers licker sort of enthusiast, always believing that if it's your car, you're free to do what you want with it, but if you ruin your car, I will call you a dickhead for it. 

 

I'm a VW nut, (yeah yeah..) and as such I've watched modified beetles and golfs over the years and quite enjoyed what folks have done, but then the whole matt black, rusty shite bolted to them, taking the paint off business started happening, and I don't get that.  I don't mind a car that's been ravaged by use and the hands of time, I find some mild decay a little interesting, but if you stick nitromors over your bonnet because it makes people look at you, you've gone down in my estimations.  I'll let you enjoy it.  But I won't praise your car, or the work you've done to it.  It seems a waste to me.  If you do something dangerous to your car, I WILL call you a prat for doing so.

 

Anyway I digress.

 

So, as some of you know, I've now been the custodian of my W124 300E (M103 12v non cat) for some time now.  I sold it to a lad as I was never going to get it done, and then he started to pinapple it, then lost interest and built a big turbo engine for his Mitsubishi colt... then left a job at a classic restoration business where he was storing the car to go and be a fitter for Merc Commercial vehicles.  I saved the car from being bailed up, and it's sat waiting for me to get round to it.

 

Well, now I'm getting round to it, partly because my landlord at the unit is getting sick of the sight of it, and has offered me free storage at their farm.. away from all my tools, meaning it'll sit even longer!

 

The car.. well it's last MOT was in 2009, it failed on the following:

That happened while my Dad owned the car.

 

He did some of the stuff that needed doing.  And then never could get it to run right.  Lack of understanding of the Jetronic fuel injection. 

 

Obviously, it's been sat, so I've had a good poke under it for rot in the usual places, and I'm happy to report it's OK.  Infact it's very solid, it's never been welded and won't need any.  There are a few signs of breach of the rubberised underseal, which I've removed back to clean metal, neutralised with genolite, and then brushed on some grey stripe to protect it further, followed by a shultz underseal to keep it looking tidy.

 

Last night I had the relays, plugs, fuses etc off and cleaned up any corrosion, that's all sorted now.  Aside from a lazy wiper linkage, everything seems to work as it's meant to.

 

The front wings are now aftermarket.  That's annoying because the panel gap is awful by the door.

Now, lets start with those wheels.

 

They're going.  They're the wrong, they look stupid.  To make it look right, I'd have to buy some scene like rubber for them, and lower the car.  I don't want to do that.  They were only ever really used to move the car, I was given them for repairing a MK2 Golf.  When I saved the car, he wanted to keep the 16" sportline wheels from a later C Class that were fitted as he'd refurbished them and wanted to get some money out of the car.

 

They are actually genuine Aero One's (I've sent some images through to someone on one of the Faceache W124 groups that knows this stuff who's confirmed).  They're W124 offset but presently have massive tyres fitted.

 

I bought set of 15 holes from someone on here.. sorry, I forget who, but he had a berlingo :lol:

They were original equipment on my car, they're currently at the blasters waiting for me to collect them.  I've not done that yet as I've not bought suitable tyres (I've got some mismatched part worns).  I'm swayed toward Continental's in the original 195 65 R15, I've been told to ensure I get 91V rated ones, because otherwise the comfort will be ruined...

 

The indicators, we want gingercators, we know this.  The rear lights are tinted, I'm not sure if they should be, I think they'd look better if they weren't.  I'll source orange ones and sell these.

 

My car had the optional side repeaters.  They're behind the wings, because aftermarket wings have no hole for the indicators in..

 

The fuel pumps have failed, they need to be swapped out.  I've got one on the shelf, the second on order.  I'll give it new fuel filters too.  Hopefully I can then sort out the issues with it not running right.  I suspect the failing pumps caused someone to richen it up and that's made the CO2 really high.

 

The front spring, as you know, I've swapped.

 

I'm finding myself looking at making this car as close to factory as I can.

 

It does need some paint.  The arches are a bit crispy at the rear and I want to sort that before it gets any worse, but ideally I want to MOT it before I attack the bodywork properly.

 

The car is 040, Black (the same colour they used on the hammers), the sacco boards are a matt grey, I've got them all, I just need to find some clips for them.

The interior is MBTex Mushroom, (175).  it's held up OK, it needs a clean up and a bit of a repair to the drivers bolster.

 

The engine is the m103 unit, with a 722.3something or other 4 speed automatic with 2nd gear start.

 

I'm scared I'm becoming a licker..

Doug, I don't know if I thanked you, but the clips have arrived.

 

As has a load of other stuff.  I don't want to say I'll get anything done this weekend, as no doubt life will throw up some kick in the balls or other, and it won't happen.

 

However, gingercators and brake discs and pads are winging their way to me now.

 

A new compliment of ceramic torpedo fuses are sat with the fuel pumps and a filter in the workshop waiting for me to fit them.

The fusebox cover that was removed causing a huge amount of corrosion to the fuse box is now re-enstated.

 

No pictures to update with I'm afraid.

      So I bought this omega in 2015/16 with the intention of doing a banger rally to Benidorm. The engine had a horrible grinding noise and the auto box was lazy. I spent £100 buying it, £50 on oil and filter for the gearbox and sold it for £200. I sold it to a distant mate who put another 2.5 Diesel engine in and put it back on the road. He’s been using it as a daily ever since. He bought a later omega in better condition with the same engine and offered me this one back or scrap it. £50 exchanged palms and the Omega is now back on my driveway. Epic. 
      So the plan is this. I’m going to let it sit on my drive for a while, as next year I’m going to do another Banger rally. Cool. Then on return, the engine and Auto gearbox will be transplanted into my diesel Carlton. I hate having a manual gearbox so a diesel auto carlton is a great idea. Whether it happens or not is another thing. But I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

      Now in my mucky hands is this S Type Mondeo Lincoln. It's not like a Mondeo Lincoln  though, just uses some of the bits as it's from a time when jaguar was experiencing some 'technical' issues. 
      It has managed to hang onto the feel of a premium car but for the use of cost saving interior plastics made from the same gear that land Rover used in the discovery 2 of the same era, I know, I have one of those too! That has some BMW switches in it though.
       
      This jaag was cheap. Why did I buy it? All I wanted really was a small convertible for the summer to smoke around in, this is the polar opposite. 
      The price was good but these cars are without their expensive issues. I liked the body. It's virtually rust free, a freak of nature and it had a set of premium tyres on it which suggested it's had some money chucked at it.
       
      That's all I wanted really from it. The bolt on stuff and mechanicals are fairly easy to sort out, plus I can upgrade as I feel fit.
       
      Today I've been bonding with this machine. It's got to beat the 3 series I have as a good daily or it's out. It's going to be a tall order, the 318 is bionic!
       
      I have many miles to do in the next few months, I need a motorway cruiser auto. The odd jaunt for a few hundred miles is the 318's and my clutch legs limit!
       
      Now, this car has been owned previously by a few members on here, the work it requires is because it is a cheap car and 20 years old and has a jaguar badge on it. There are a few issues with it.
       
      As said, it has to be put into immediate service. I've owned it 2 days and it's already done over 300 miles, and will do all that again tomorrow! So let's get started!
       
      After about 100 miles yesterday, I reversed it for the first time in my ownership and when braking the noise was alarming! Had a look and the outer rear brake pad was metal on the disc. I only had another 60 miles to go!
      A phone call on the move saw a set in stock back home to be picked up. Sweet.
       
      That was yesterday, I've got a day now to change the rear pads and sort out the dropped headlamps with a couple of screws... A couple of hours it'll be Sorted... He says...
       
      WIND BACK CALIPERS! Yes, they are. My special tool? Sorry? What? No tool?
      Well, I cobbled together a bar and a pair of molies but Christ, that was messing about! I wanted to secure the caliper to the mounting to hold it still but the sliders internal thread was cross threaded on both sliders, so I had to tap them out first. It worked but not without a fight. Then my neighbour came over to have a nose at the new aquisition... Him: Morning, how you getting on"?, Me: "Shit, you haven't got a brake caliper tool have you"? Him: "Yeah, I'll go get it".

      I took a look around under there, it's nearly all shot. Most ball joints are exposed to the elements so all need replacing but not before a decent jet wash.
       

       

       
      There's little play in the joints so all that goes on the list of parts and graft! Wheels on, I loosened and torqued all the wheel nuts around the car and done the Tyre pressures, we were running soft all round.
       
      Next was the front lights. A screw mod can be done but I took the back off the units and they were, well toast. Nothing much holding the inner lenses still at all. There was only one thing for it...
       

       
      I had readied myself for this. I got hold of a replacement lamp mounting kit with all parts made from nylon. This involved dissecting the lamp which was tough! The mounts that came out, or what was left of them were weaker than Jacobs crackers and just crumbled. To get the bumper off, the plastic under tray bolts were all seized so I had to grind them off. More knackered parts were seen. The auto box cooler has shed most of it's cooling fins, the radiator is sweating and the power steering is hemorrhaging fluid on full lock. There's also a coolant leak at the thermostat housing and there's a high pitch whine at 1000 RPM which turns out to be the alternator. More for the list.
      Still, back to the lights. I need to be able to see tonight so I took a level off the tourings lights and marked on to a wheely bin, these are pretty spot on. Then I can use the bin for the Jaags lights and I won't be far off 
       

       
      Going back together nicely it was a good time to run some tcut over the faded lenses. They need a more intense compound and a machine but will do for now.

      I then drove 120 miles in it and drove it like it was stolen. It had it, all of it! Slight brake judder at 90 and I couldn't get the alignment done as I had no time (see above pics)
       
      So now we have to price up priorities like the knackered joints on the rear and a full service, two Goodyears and investigate the power steering leak which, I'll hazard a guess at the rack seals are fubard. 
       
      So in summary, I got a bargain barge that has it's fair share of issues, the interior quality is a bit shocking in places but when the hammer is down, none of this matters! It fits in, it can be a proper giffer cruiser with radio two on at 30mph but it'll turn into a bruiser with some oldskool hardcore at a tonne. It's come to a good home.

      I thought I'd start a thread for this as I'll probably end up asking all sorts of questions, given that this is my first 'proper' Citroën.
       
      So... the ground clearance lever won't go all the way to the highest setting (all others work), which is bad 'cos the book says I need it to do that in order to check the LHM level. It feels like something's seized, so I don't want to force it. Any ideas for a plan of attack would be much appreciated.
       
      Next up are the wheels. I now have a set of 205 pepperpots that have just gone off for powder coating & I need to get some tyres for them. The handbook says the car should have 165/70R14s on, the wheels came with 185/65R14 on. Any thoughts about what size I should get please? Cheers.
