MOT retest questions?

Recommended Posts

Put my car in for an MOT test on Friday - it failed on usual ball joint stuff. Everything was fixed, so I took it in for a retest this morning, but on the way in the ABS light comes on.

I take the car in for them to do the retest on coming back to collect, they say they didn't retest it, as the ABS light is on. I say I was aware you're only supposed to test the items on the fail sheet, hence the name 'retest'. The lady says a new rule is they test other things or something - but they didn't log it in, so I haven't lost my 'retest' status.

Is this true? Thanks!

I spoke to my tester. "Hows it going the new test?". Shrug - "same as before mostly". I had a car tested - made no difference. Without being prejudiced any MoT place that employs a lady (or man) to admin stuff tends to be a bit picky in my experience. I prefer the two blokes in oily overalls type operations.

I just MOT'ed a couple of cars and one failed on an issue that it passed on last year although on the whole the tester also concurred that the new rules didn't really affect much, one car is 05 one 03.

I've had a chat before with my MOT testers that I used to use for failing something that wasn't there previously but they said similar, that although they try to only retest what's in front of them on the sheet, some faults are so obvious (like in your case and a safety system also) that they have to either advise (their preferred option) or fail the retest. IMO it makes sense because after repairing something to pass, another fault may have entered the system of the car and you could sell that straight on with a full ticket then they get the comeback when shit happens.

Mate of mine sold a saxo vtr after doing an MOT on it, the kid wrapped it up that night claiming he lost control on a bend after his gearbox locked up. Utter shite as we all know but mummy was a copper and believed her previous boy of course. An investigation was done and the only fault find was a split CV gaiter which the copper desperately tried to claim was the cause of the failed gearbox. It didn't wash and my mate heard no more about it other than weekly visiting from the ministry despite seeing them once a year perviously.

Takes one fuck up to ruin someone's reputation.

Get it fixed it's brakes FFS, you've probably disturbed something doing the balljoints and I'm sure it won't be too hard to fix. What car is it? If it's vag you can diagnose it in about 30 seconds.

Your asking them to give you a certificate out that its roadworthy and it isn't. Nobody worth their salt is going to go over everything again but if its very obviously got a 'dangerous' fault appear they won't give you the ticket.

Retest goes as follows, Section 19 https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/class3457/Introduction.html#section_19

19 Retest following failure

Information on retest fees and procedures can be found in the current MOT Testing Guide and on the 'MOT fees and appeals' poster (VT9A).

When carrying out a partial retest you must examine:

  • all the previously failed item(s)
  • any item(s) that may have been affected by the repairs
  • any minor defect or item advised on at the time of the initial test
If during a retest it's clear that the vehicle has any major or dangerous defects, you must issue a new VT30.

See section 1.6 https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/class3457/Section-1-Brakes.html#section_1.6

1.6 Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

You must inspect any ABS systems fitted.

When testing ABS equipped vehicles, the road wheels that are lifted off the ground shouldn’t be allowed to rotate when the ignition is on. This can cause the ABS system to indicate a fault which may require specialist equipment to rectify.

If the ABS has been intentionally rendered inoperative, the whole system must be removed. This doesn’t apply to sensor rings or other ABS components which are an integral part of another component, such as a brake disc or drive shaft.

It's not permissible to remove or disable the ABS from a vehicle first used on or after 1 January 2010.

Defect Category
  • a) Warning device not working Major
  • b ) Warning device shows system malfunction Major
  • c) Wheel speed sensors missing or damaged Major
  • d) Wiring damaged Major
  • e) Other components missing or damaged Major

So, go and get it fixed and consider yourself lucky they didn't issue a new VT30 and spunk away your opportunity for a partial re-test.

Sorry, what do you mean by LA Law? I assume you mean losing my rag - why would I do that? I was just asking a simple question.

No I don't mean that, I mean trying to argue them into a pass on a 'technicality' when there's clearly a fail-worthy faults with your car.

No, I didn't.

I changed the ABS sensor for a new one, cleared it with VAGCOM, so 'rebooked' tomorrow!

The MOT tester was bang right doing what they did, when something now classified as a serious fail showed up, if he had granted a pass, and you had a whoops on your way home, there would be such a legal shitstorm it is unreal. Just think about that for a few minutes

It's a mine field when it comes to MOTs. I've been a tester for 10 years and they are making it more complicated all the time. Technically a cars mot is only valid at time of test except for corrosion which is 3 months. In theory you can use a rachet as a bottom arm bolt and put a split pin through it and it will pass also you can have gaping holes in the floor but as long as it's not near anything structural it will pass.

I was up for a retest today on a car that had failed on two droplinks, two driveshaft boots and a tyre. During the retest the tester noticed that a brake hose was badly perished which he missed on the first test. He never recorded the retest and told me to replace the hose before the 14 days are up then he will issue the free pass. If I don’t do that it will need another full test which will be payable. I’m quite happy that he did see it, as it’s brakes, if it bursts it could kill someone so it needs fixed.
