The routine carrying of tools in-car?

Many, many moons ago, when I had the Rapier, South Yorkshires finest pulled me very early one Monday morning on my way back to Scunnie. They politely enquired as to why the rear of the car was down at heel.

I opened the boot and showed them the reason, a fuck off size tool box.

They enquired as to why I needed to carry so many tools with me. When I replied it was because the Rapier was liable to break down at any moment they smiled and sent me on my way !

My ZT-T overheated in central London traffic on friday on the way to play a gig (I wouldn't drive there unless I had to). I had a bottle of water in the boot because it's had cooling issues before, but on inspection at the roadside a section of hose had disappeared and it had emptied the entire system...

I have basic RAC but being on a deadline to play a gig I didn't feel like waiting around so just let it cool briefly, ran it hot to the nearest halfords (about 15 mins with another cooling break halfway), and went in to purchase necessary supplies. Fresh coolant, a length of hose and a box of jubilee clips had it fixed in less than an hour, was very glad I'd packed my multi tool though as otherwise would have been buying new tools as well. Didn't much enjoy working under it with just the standard scissor jack lifting one corner though...

I carry one of those VW reversible screwdrivers, some welding wire, a few jubilee clips, needle nose mole grips, a 10/13 spanner and spider wrench made of good steel. Invariably a brass footpump, too.

I heard about a driver who was killed by his own mole grips in a crash, less embarrassing perhaps than the hearse driver who was killed by his 'passenger'.

You all know that once you take one spare out of the car, that is the part which will fail.

AA card and a mobile phone!

I do actually carry a jump pack and a compressor thing, always have water (ostensibly for the dogs) and of course, the much needed bottle of 'quick wax' and several micro fibre cloths :)

Since my lockup is away from home, I usually have a full complement of Halfords tools in the boot of whatever I happen to be driving. As others have saud, more often than not the only use they get is on other people's cars. When I was delivering pizza I was always the go to "do you have X tool with you?" person, both for other drivers and general repairs in the shop. Saved us from flooding the shop when the shutoff for the hot water hose failed to shut off the flow of water out of the broken hose.

2 breakdown memberships.

Call them both out, cancel the one that doesn't arrive first.

Not joking about the former, had far too many 4+ hours for recovery stories recently, and all my cars are shit in some important respect.

I saved a damsel in distress earlier, one of my colleagues had left her lights on all day in the work carpark and she crept up to me at hometime and asked if I had any jump leads "Since you're good with car stuff"

I did, and got her car going again. Thats my good deed for the day done, and justification for carrying the box of valuable tat around with me for at least another 12 months

Poundworld had these for £5. But due to the fact the store only had half a shelf of tat left. I bought these for 90p.

The last time I drove in snow was about 4 years ago, so I can't wait for the next blizzard in this 30 degree heat.

I keep a screwdriver set, 10 & 13mm spanners in the Saab along with a full compliment of bulbs and few pairs of pliers. I have got a similar setup I need to put in the Toyota just in case. Too many non-standard screw heads in the Saab I can't warrant buying a load of special tools just to keep in the car, minor things can wait til I get home.

I did have a nice bottle jack and decent wheelbrace I kept in the boot with the spare wheel but I'll be buggered if I can find them anywhere. They are not in the boot any more.

In the past I did keep a more comprehensive set of tools in the boot but TBH most of my previous cars were pretty reliable it ended up being a waste of time.
