Hi, I'm Jon and I'm based between Leeds and York, so quite near to e few people on here. I've been lurking on here for a few months (work is quiet at the mo) but got spurred on to get my finger out and join in after meeting Hirst brielfy at Thornes Park on Friday. I've always been into shite cars, which has reflected the ones I've owned (too few). Here's the current lot, which need thinning down.....

This is my latest buy, used as my daily with it's predecessor in the background - I tend to hold onto cars for a while. I've had it just under a month and covered about 1000 miles, all nicely troublefree. Had 49000 registered miles and I'm inclined to believe it. It's a 1.8 CVH which seems universally panned, yet it doesn't smoke. I can't find much info on them so, apart from them smoking, is there any ticking-timebomb-like issues I should look out for? It's surprising how my driving habits have changed since buying it - pipe and slippers now urgently required.

This is probably more like it - 1969 Hillman Imp super:

I've owned this since 2002 and it came from it's first owner, via Ron Aspinwall from Impspeed in Skelmersdale. The photos shows it being dragged out of the garage I'd been storing it in, last year. It's still a working project but shouldn't need that much to get back on the road, bar the seized on brakes (dropped level in the master cylinder). Anyway, I hope that's the case, as it's going to be my wedding car in November! Still, we're getting married at the church 3 doors down from our house, so not too far to walk...

Now some solid gold tat and the reason for my username (and obv. very much a project). 1983 A reg Cavalier estate bought new by my parents when I was 2 and a bit, from Fry's of Otford in Kent IIRC

Was such a new model then that each dealer had one car and Fry's was white, which my parents didn't like. They managed to find a dealer in Oxford that would swap their red one for Fry's white, so the deal was done. However, the colour they really wanted was brown....

Anyway, it needs a lot of work now and will probably be rebuilt using this:

Found on Ebay a couple of years back and paid £100 for it, then found a nice cheap council-owned garage to store it in in York. Really quiet setting with a lane for access only and security lights that come on, no graffiti etc. so only checked every few months. Bliss!

And now for a shameless ad. My AX GT5

I bought this at the end of 2006 to replace a Saab 9000 that my girlfriend took on, since she managed to bugger up the mk4 Escort I'd given her 6 months earlier; no wonder she's marrying me. The Saab's still going well but tbh I was growing a little tired of the AX as a daily, when she called to tell me of the Sierra she'd seen for sale. Top lass.

57000 miles from new and one previous owner. MOT til end of Feb 2010 and tax till 31/07/09. Central locking (inc. boot), electric front windows, removable sunroof and original storage bag. Lots of fun and surprising acceleration within legal limits, though it always feels faster.

Sold with 13 alloys in total(!)

Michelin X all round FTW!

In all honesty, the pics probably do it justice but it is still very useable. However, it has 'quirks' such as intermittent nsf indicators and a grumbly cv joint on cornering. Bloody Frenchies.

So what do you think? £225 buys it.

Ta muchly.

Welcome!Cor, I love the lot. Sierra looks a good buy but crikey, when did I last see a Mk2 Cav estate?! Top find with the bodyshell.AX looks fun too. Actually, they are fun. Lots of it. Seems good for the money.

Hi & welcome! Nice cars, that AX is pretty cool too.

Welcome. Liking the reshelled Cav project, my parents bought a new 84 Cav in 'Brazil Brown' a 1.6L if I remember rightly :D AX is very tempting. I shall resist although it does look very decent for the money.

bonjour, nice collection loving the imp, was working on a sunbeam stiletto just the other day lol..agreed cant remember the last cavvie estate i saw :?

the colour they really wanted was brown....

Do your folks want to sign up here too? :wink:I like those Cav estates - they look useful.

I lurrrve the AX - always a better car than the saxo.I especially like the way you have put a rolling chassis in a council lockup for an indeterminate length of time....true shite style mate! I have been making queries with Edinburgh city council to take on a couple of lock ups in which to store some truly appauling tin including an XJ40 Crapugar enthusinastically advertised as "rat" but actually they ment "rot"...I thought I'd just leave it there till thecouncil reposses the lockup for storage of rubbish.I'll have a word with a mate who is looking fro a reliable hatch - the AX could be just the ticketayerich

So this is the situation.Work's been pretty dry of late, but the instant I post the AX for sale, my phone's been calling with a flurry of jobs. Therefore, the free days I had in the week to show it to prospective punters are now filled, but weekends are alas still good.Does this sound like I'm complaining...? Oh yeah, like Stuno and fotorabia on this forum, I too have been to Horopito Scrap yard in New Zealand, when I visited last year. Anybody interested in seeing mostly similar cars but from different angles?

Was that AX the top of the range sporty job that all the boy racers liked in the late 80s along with their R5 GT Turbos, Nova GTEs & Pug 205 GTis?

Posted

The AX GT was certainly the Saxo VTR of its day, though probably less desirable in the mumsy 5 door spec mine's in.It certainly tempted me enough to buy it, with fond memories of my first car, which was a 1.1 5 door AX. I always aspired to the GTs and finally the chance came, though unexpectedly, as I quite liked the Saab. The difference in those extra 250cc or so and the 205GT gearbox gives in acceleration and general grin factor was amazing. I did miss the single spoke steering wheel though....

go for it !

F'kinell, £225 for that?? That looks tidy!If only I could. Well I could, but I'd be killed for buying something that's not an estate, and thus wasting money. That is lush.Oh, and welcome to the forum ;)

Welcome to the forum! You seem to have quite impeccable shite credentials. £225 for your AX sounds like a mega bargain to me.

I soo want to rescue that AX!! Illness + no money scuppers me at the first hurdle!

Apologies, but my internet connection's about as modern as my cars - I've got mobile broadband and the signal is so shite where I live. 30kbps is good going! I tried to upload 40 photos to photobucket and just gave up after it spazzed out 20 minutes later.Anyway, poor excuse over. I'm in York on the weekend and will have sooper dooper speeds, so will bosh them on then. I promise.Anyone wanna come see the AX while I'm there?

Hello and welcome to ASI like your Sierra but even more fond of the Cavalier. My Dad had a Sapphire Blue Estate 1.6 D-reg one in the 80's. :D

Posted

my misses had a blue 1.6L sierra estate when i met her 3 years ago, a bail of hay fell on the roof and that was the end of that

Here's a couple of bits that may be of no use to anyone but free nevertheless.

ITEM 1:

Posted Image

Fiat uno standard 13" rim with unused spare TIGAR cheapo-shite tyre, stuck on about 4 years ago and still holding a good pressure.

ITEM 2:

Posted Image

Marelli Digiplex ECUs, code MED 439 M, bought for the Uno. Thought it had ECU probs when it kept cutting out randomly - turned out to be the engine crank sensor. Anyway, was a total ballache trying to find a replacement, so took the shiny original one off the car when it was scrapped. It seems that the sole application for these ECU's is for 1990-1991 facelift Fiat Uno 70 sx i.e models. Later ones had cats and earlier ones had 1.3 rather than 1.4 engines. So I'll be expecting a barrage of PMs for these highly sought after parts!

Also not photo'd is a brown flat parcel shelf for the Uno, which is the same width as an Ax's - had and idea to cut it to size to replace the AX's feeble effort but never did. Collection would be very much preferred from York/Leeds area (stored in York but I live in Leeds)
