What's the most expensive modern you've driven?

Probably a Porsche 911 on a race track. Was a boggo standard Carrera, but I don't think they're cheap. Not a work jolly, I paid for that!On the road, probably a brand new MINI Clubman Cooper S horrible estate thing. Over £24k with the spec it had - that much for a hideous, impractical car that's got about as much in common with a Mini as a one-legged Frog. Only the frog is more attractive.Oh no, wait. I've also driven a top-spec Nissan X-Trail with all the trimmings. That was about £28k worth. For about a day. Hmmmm, depreciation...

Aston belonging to one of the doctors with a flappy paddle gearbox. Not that nice a drive round the streets of Blackpool I can assure you.

Most expensive I've driven- Nissan Pathfinder rental in Canada. Was OK, had something like a 4 litre petrol V6, so made great noises when you booted the autobox.

I once drove a Rover 200 bubble development car witha longitudinally mounted engine and transaxle gearbox round the track at gaydon, that must have had a few squid put into it!

I defy anyone to outdo this:Brand new unregistered Alfa 90 2.5V6, back in 1985. :D Go on, I dare you!

I never get to drive anything good.Only 'new stuff' I get my hands on is new-ish white vans & avis lower-middle-segment chod.Nearly all my friends drive Focuses so nothing of excitement there. My bufoonish friend Russ used to tool about in a Cayenne Turbo before he fell out of that window and landed on his face, but I never got to steer it or owt. Now he drives a 1.0 Poolo  I guess it's between an Evo VI (when they first came out) or going waaaay back when I used to get to drive about in my bosses year-old Range Rover (in 1997).

I did a bit of chauffering, my ex-boss started up his own business doing weddings and posh days out and stuff.I helped him out by piloting brides around in an Merc - the model number escapes me but it was a huuuge saloon with a three point summat litre engine and a sequential or autobox.I also once - very briefly - got to move his DB9 that the grooms used to book for the trip. It felt like it could do a hell of a lot of damage :)

Most expensive modern I've driven was a new 911 Turbo from the factory to Blackpool for a mate. That was fun.

How modern? Recentish stuff would be confined to Turbo R and Continental GT. (Turbo R wins out every time)My general rule though is never to drive anyone else's car if I can't afford to replace it, this rule is only broken if I'm 100% certain about the insurance and the owner is a very good friend. The car with the highest replacement cost, in the "Oh my god I hope I don't break it" category would be a Bugatti Type 35. Apart from that the odd newish coach (have you seen the price!!!!) and some military kit. (I'm not really into bling moderns)

-you're very sensible: when I ragged around in that Q7 thing I was a little light on the old insurance....So generally the consensus is that we (the shite car fanatics) find foul expensive grot wholly off putting and overrated? Good, that's what I hoped.

A 35! OhMonDieu, dream car... would love one of those Pur Sang replicas, not likely to happen.

I did have an extremely illegal blast up and down Moss Lane in Sale in a mate's dad's 4 litre V8 Jag. That was a laugh, as was baiting a 5 up Nissan Micra full of chavs down the M60.I must point out that us 4 did this (including his boy) whilst he was on holiday in the Algarve. He smelt a rat when he got in his car to go to work and it was half a tank lighter in fuel (full bore kickdowns were quite expensive in that thing) and noticed there was a digital camera (my digital camera) that I'd left on the seat.He had a look through and while there were no pictures of us other three driving, we did get one of him, sat in the driver's seat, outside me china Colin's flat, grinning like a twat.............. :D That car would have been a year old at the time. Too quiet for me, but it shifted. It sounded like a washing machine on cam. I like V8s to woofle. The only other expensive moderns I've driven are fatha wat's 525d estate (nippy but bollocks inside) and an Audi A5 3 litre TDi belonging to a lad off NSJC.It was cramped inside and didn't like being chucked around. Plus the steering was a feel free zone. But the gearbox was beautiful and by fucking Christ did it shift itself in a straight line.

That's a shame, I think that the A5 is a cracking looking car, and they are pretty cheap on contract hire too.

Oh hold on, there's quite a bit when I think about it. Audi A6 2.7 twin turbo diesel estate thing. Those can't be cheap. T'was a managers car. Think he may have heard me wheel spinning it as I pulled out of the yard. Much torque and a light clutch!Another manager had a Mondeo STD thing. That was shit. Not sure how much they cost new. Just talking out and out value, I've tooled about in a few Rollers and Bentleys now, and must admit that I quite liked it. So much so that I keep seeing cheap, shagged out Silver Spirits for a few grand (or even Bentley Turbo Arse!) and think "hmmmm, fuck the running costs. It'll be fun!"

This kind of doesnt work for me - other than my Mum's Aygo which was around £8k new, the other 'new' thing I've driven (apart from vans) was a Caterham Roadsport SV 140. Not exactly swish or modern compared with other peoples experiences. Anyway.I lived in London on the mainline out to Caterham so thought I'd take one out for a test drive. Had loved the idea of Sevens since I first read about the JPE, so was very excited...I took it out, had it flat through the gears upto illegal speeds etc. Didnt really dare go around too many corners quickly as didnt know the roads or limits of the car....It was one of those 'never meet your heroes' type things - it was somewhat boring, didnt feel mega quick and was just too civilised for what it was. Very odd compared with what I was expecting.
