Rover 75 May just be okay after all. Maybe....

At least I have a 16mm slim spark plug socket to add to my collection.

I’d be tempted to disconnect the water to the inlet manifold temporarily to see what happens.

I'd be tempted to call car take back and know what happens.

Yes, Edinburgh is a tad distant. Thank you though.

Thats a shame about the rocker gasket. Id leave it be for now chap until youre back to your fighting weight, dont do something youll regret. IM gasket would def be the thing to replace as others have said, esp if it is only a fiver or so.

At least if that doesnt work you can properly take stock at that time.

Just going to have to take my time tbh. Cannot do otherwise.

The IM gasket is here anyhow.

If that doesn't sort it then I doubt that I will do any more to it.

New plugs fitted to see if that made a difference. Nope, did it fuck. Will try and make a start on the IM gasket tomorrow.

However, the faith is failing.

If that inlet manifold gasket doesn't do the trick (hopefully it will), then looks like this is its last hurrar?

Thing is, if the head gasket was fine when parked up, surely its incredibly unlikely to pop itself after only a couple of weeks being idle?

I'll be doing an inlet manifold gasket on 1.4 for the first time in the next couple of weeks if you'd like me to take pictures.   There were probably loads of pictures at MG Rover Org but most have gone in the Photoshop genocide.

Nope, not going to use that stuff. If the IM gasket does nowt then it will up for sale as spares or repair, otherwise car take back are offering £160. Not going overboard on this.

Piccies would be ace, thank you.

The second plug in from the N/S was more oiled up.

This might be some help, it's on a freelancer so access might be slightly easier on a 75.

You need stepladders to do it on a Freelander though, it's WAY down in the engine bay. Pi$$ed myself first time I saw a K in a fleelander, thought the engine mounts had been nicked.

Were any of the plugs- especially number 4 - clean and shiny?

No, none of them. They were all very sooty like the piccie but one was slightly more oily than sooty.

Yes, the gap was rather gappy. New plugs are much less gappy.

looked a tad corroded around the electrode too...

They were a bit sad looking generally. I have never seen such a sooted up plug before in my life.

Compression test?

? . I have a spare gauge you are welcome to. Sooted up plugs like that show that the engine management is struggling as a component has gone down, if it was burning coolant then they'd be brown and a bit crusty. A knackered air flow meter/ MAF would foul the plugs up and cause unstable idle/ running, however there would be not much more smoke than normal, it would just smell rich or with a cat, fruity. You would get the EML on for a prolonged component failure. A simple compression test would confirm a HG leak into a cylinder or at best confirm that the HG is ok. It's easy enough to do if you can remove spark plugs. Oil into a cylinder would also blacken the plugs like tar and smoke blue, whilst coolant would steam, a mix of both would be greyish I suppose. I wouldn't say that there is any particular time for a HG to go, various reasons cause the issue, it's pot luck but I would assume poor maintenance history for a lot of failures, or sometimes poor component/ material suitability.

The current engine was a replacement unit put in at great expense by the owner prior to our Mr Beard. The old boy spent thousands on the car, literally.

As much as I like the car I have to draw a line under it I think. If,but's and maybe's are frustrating and are going to cost money I haven't got at the moment.

Plus recovering from the op and am just exhausted. Cut losses and all that.

Car take back have offered £160 for it.  Anyone want anything off it before it goes?

Another one bites the dust, etc

Mind you a 1.8 auto doesnt sound too great a combo to be fair.

Sadly there is just too much on my plate to be spending money I don't have and expending energy I no longer have. The 1.8 and auto combo is actually a nice enough mix.

I will happily sell it as a project to someone who wants to give me £160 for it. Better than going over the bridge.

Nooooo! If you haven't done that intake gasket, let come down next week and give you a hand!

Grand offer, same as Bub - but no guarantee that is the issue.

By all means pop over and have a look at some small Triumphs. Always welcome.
