What can you tell me about 02 BMW's? - Now Mine :-)

As the subject heading really, I've been looking for a classic now for a little while to replace SWMBO's Cack Puma.

First I was looking at Beetles but decide that they are shit, then Triumph Herald's but most are rusty and I'm not sure how the misses will get on driving one.

I've now spotted a BMW 1602 on the web for sale here

She looks like a nice one, Wifey like's the colour which is what she goes by (as women do  ) and I'm quite interested.

I've emailed the seller who's sent me some more better pictures.

It looks pretty clean, Just MOTed but no TAX, done 69k with stamped up book, Interiors a bit blue and sunbleached though.

What are these like as classics?, What sort of price should i be paying for it?

Also it's in North Lincoln which is a good 3 hour drive from here, Do you think i should bother going up to look?.

Can't make my mind up as i really like it, (Needs better wheels though)and need a kick up the ass to help me make my mind up.

They are pretty dependable, a freind had a 2002tii a while back and he loved it. They do rot and replacement panels, although availiable in the main, can be expensive.Mechanically they are pretty simple, and IIRC the drivetrain pretty much carried over to the first 3 series.Their 'classic' enough to avoid the cock factor, although that is fading now that Audi have picked up the baton. They are very basic, but trim seems to be hard wearing. Just watch for rot, especially round the front end.

I've seen that very car! I remember it having the odd rust bubble here and there and the interior was a bit moldy but it did look fairly decent. It was parked outside a small garage that seems to specialise in BMW's situated right near the bubblecar museum at Cranwell.

GR8t, Just what i wanted to see!, Not seen any front photos yet so that's handy, Chaars Ratdat!Looks pretty decent in these snaps as well :)

I'd honestly go down and check it in person, if there's bits of rust, you must check underneath. I bought a 2002 with the knowledge it had rust, but not actually knowing the whole floor was being held in with the carpet.

They had no rust proofing whatsoever, and this was the car that 'broke' a near bankrupt/disappearing BMW.

Before this, they were struggling trying to sell these:

The 2002 is in my top 3 favourite cars of all time, if I ever get round to getting another, I don't think I'll ever buy another car. I'd glady buy that off you if you get bored. ;)

that looks like a nice straight honest old bus trig, it certainly doesnt look its had a lot of work from the pics. I dont know what these things are worth at all, but if it seems reasonable to you I would say its defo worth a 3-hr drive!

Posted

I like that. I'd hand over some groats for it like. Recently I have seen a raas hotted-up one, bloke blatting it between buckingham & milton keynes about half seven each morning.

Posted

I've had two 2002's, I have never seen rust like it, it just spreads like a Californian forest fire. Nice but probably never again!

Posted

Jaymec can supply most bits for them, the fuel injected ones can be a bit of a pain, the carb ones are basically pretty simple. As stated before, look for grot, grot, and more grot. Interiors are a bit basic, and tend to go a bit curly round the edges, but a good one is a really nice drive.

Posted

I've had the slightly older shape 2002Tii with the round back lights, much nicer I think, suit the car better. Mine had miniltes which also suited the car well. Problems.... Diff broke, easy fix as it unbolts. Fuel injection was a royal pain in the ass, it's mechanical. Threw a rod threw th side of the block in the end oh and they rust. Still loved it though!Had a 3.0 Csi as well, they rust too! Sold it for a 3k profit and put a down payment on our first house

Rot rot and more rot, like any old car though, the areas to look at in particular are the two cross-members that run from the floor pan into the engine as they can be a difficult repair. Also the rear areas in the boot by the shocks tend to rot. That one is a Lux model by the looks of it so extra brownie points but of no real extra value, M10 four-pot lump is mega-reliable, brakes are a bloody nightmare with two servos and if the servos are bolloxed (which they do) and you can't find decent secondhand ones then you're looking at £600 for a re-con pair. The way of testing them is this (courtesy of 2002.co.uk):

Suspect Servos? With engine off - Pump the brake pedal 10 times. Leave your foot on the brake pedal & start the engine. If the pedal goes down further, the servo's should be good. If the pedal pushes back on your foot, the servo's may be faulty & need to be replaced

Nicer than an Esser to my mind, cool styling but horrid driving position. Same wheel/offset as E30 (not E21) so a set of 15" BBS E30 wheels can look really tasty without looking silly. The thing I like about BMWs is the incredible parts availability-you will be able to order parts from BMW still although they'll come from Germany and Jaymic in Northampton are very good, engine bits are easy to get as the M10 was used in the E30 and E28 up to the mid-eighties. Bonnet and bootlids are particularly expensive and enough to make to want to sit right down and cry, in fact just about everything for these is expensive.Difficult to value but perhaps even £4,000 if it was really nice but about £2850 would be the price I'd pay for a 1.6 in peachy condition realistically.....maybe.

Well just got of the phone to the chap.

Nice old boy, He's only had it since October but selling as his 2002 is now been resprayed.

He's said it's very soild, Apart from some scabs on the drivers side under the door moldings which is surface rust.

He said everything works perfect, has no radio but nether any speaker holes in the door cards which are mega rare by all accounts and a mint carpet.

Runs fine on unleaded as well, been a local Lincoin car from new with history to back up the 69k.

Bit worried about all this talk of parts being expensive now though :?

I'm of to see in tomorrow, Only 149 miles /4 hours to get there.

I must be mad.

Jaymic have an online parts catalogue, so you can look at spares prices on that. Shite_meister is right about bonnet and bootlids being expensive, like REALLY expensive..

Here my project 2002 Tii:

:)

(The rust on the floor is from the one in front of it that was nothing but old welding patches and repairs keeping all the rest of the rot in one BMW shaped lump - broke it for parts).

I don't think BMW parts are necesarily expensive. You just need to shop around. Jaymic are not cheap for anything! For lots of stuff, BMW are still cheaper, or so I have found, plus there's plenty of other options out there. Look at that service book though. Lovely!(and which has helpfully reminded I need to book a 'big' service for my less elderly BMW.

He said the bonnet and boot is mint on it so that's a result then!

Have you bought anything for an old BMW once they have moved it to their Mobile Tradition/Classic range? not quite the same as buying something for an E34, as someone who owns four BMWs I'll agree that their prices aren't always horrific...but anything in their classic range is.

I have to say that looks lovely, any idea on price or not?

Well it's up for £1850 but I'm sure i could haggle for around £1500 - £1600.And i mentioned the photos of it i saw that Ratdat posted, It turns out that's the BMW garage he brought it from.

I would say thats a good price but really check it thoroughly including underneath and all the nooks and crannies.Sure the parts can be expensive but unlike alot of other old cars at least the original manufacturer still makes most of the parts. Despite what station said these actually changed BMWs fortunes for the better.

Right, Don't want to sound like a wanker here but getting a bit of grief this end (Manly from my dad, Even though I'm 29 and left home years ago  )

Do you think I'm mad for driving 4 hours (8 round trip) to look at a car that maybe a bag of shite?.

And do you think it's mad to drive it home 4 hours with no breakdown cover?.

Since I've had my old man moaning on about how far it is I've been panicking about the distance, Anyone else done an epic road trip like this before and drove a new car back.

I need mojo support!

The route

Hey if you break down, simply whip out your AS assistance card and wait an extroadinarily long time for one of us to come and fetch you with an A--frame. Reckon you could get relayed back no probs in the (unlikely) event of PHAILIURE.

Drove the R14 back from my nan's in Gloucestershire, about 150-200 miles. Not quite on the same scale but it was a big thing for me at the time; unknown 27 yr old car, my first proper journey in an old car, still relatively inexperienced with only 2 yrs as a driver at that point. I'd say it was a scary prospect but I was also immensely proud piloting a car I'd coveted for a long time & finally had one in my possession :D

I say this all the time when a 2002 thread comes up, but I turned down loads of clean 2002's about 6 or 7 years ago that cost 200 - 300 quid. The prices really have rocketed!!

Sadly so have all 70's & early 80's car prices, Wasn't long ago you could pick up a half decent Mk 2 Escort for under £500, You would of thought which a recession going that prices would of dropped.Cheers for the AS Trump card Pog, Although you might live to regret it!Need to get there before Midday i think as well as I'll need to get the money out of Nationwide before it closes if I get the car.Might have to get i bed me thinks!

Just checking, but you know Nationwide are really arsey about dealing out large sums in cash, especially on a saturday. We always have to order in advance anything over a grand.
